Mobile and criminal police in Hanoi launched night patrols in the city's downtown districts on Tuesday night in an effort to cut crime.

The patrols will be out from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. every night until mid-January.

Their prime targets will be crowded public places, as well as restaurants, karaoke parlors and dance clubs where guests may be asked to present their ID papers.

Drivers out on the street late at night may also be stopped for random checks.

Hanoi police also started checking the residency status of people living in the city earlier this month.

The city of 7.6 million people is the second most crowded in Vietnam after Saigon, and population density in some downtown districts such as Ba Dinh and Hoan Kiem has exceeded 20,000 people per square kilometer.

Local police have busted around 40 criminal organizations this year, including several violent debt collection gangs, according to a report by An Ninh Thu Do (Capital’s Security) news website.

In February, the city also announced a target of busting up to 500 cases of illegal sex work this year, more than twice the number uncovered in previous years.

Hanoi authorities last year identified more than 5,500 businesses offering so-called “sensitive” services. Most of them were registered as hair salons, bars or massage parlors, but also provided illegal sex services.

Sex work is outlawed in Vietnam. Workers can be fined for providing services, while those procuring sex can receive jail time.

New statistics show a five-star hotel room in the capital now costs an average of $151 a night, compared to $118 in Saigon.

Five-star hotels in Hanoi have raised prices by 38 percent on average since last year and are charging significantly more than their peers in Saigon, with statistics showing a strong increase in the capital's international arrivals in the first nine months.

A report from real estate consultancy firm Savills showed Hanoi’s luxury hotels charged an average of $151 per night in the third quarter, which was a slight drop compared to what spring holidaymakers had to pay, but a massive leap from a year ago.

Room rates at three and four-star hotels also went up slightly to $48 and $73 per night, leaving the city’s average hotel fee at $108, up 26 percent from last year.

The industry’s supply has expanded 8 percent from last year to 9,840 rooms, but tourism figures show that arrivals have been growing at a much faster rate. International arrivals to Hanoi in the first nine months increased 24 percent on-year to around 3.5 million, according to the city’s statistics office.

Also according to Savills, Hanoi’s luxury hotels are now much more expensive than in Saigon, where five-star hotels now charge an average of $118 per night, compared to $67 for a four-star room and $43 for three-star accommodation.

The southern megacity, which received 4.2 million foreign visitors in the first nine months, plans to add more than 3,600 hotel rooms in the next three years.

Hanoi and Saigon, the country’s largest and most expensive cities, are also the top tourist destinations in Vietnam thanks to a mixture of historical sites and modern vibrancy.

In April, budget tourism site Price of Travel named the cities among the cheapest tourist spots in Asia for 2017, with daily expenses for a backpacker estimated at $18.16 in Hanoi and $18.33 in Saigon.

Hanoi, a 1,000-year-old city, was also named the cheapest travel destination by TripAdvisor travelers between 2014 and 2016. The travel site’s report last year estimated that a three-night holiday for two in Hanoi costs only $494, which is nearly four times less than New York, the most expensive travel destination in the ranking.

Hanoi has been ranked seventh on a new list of the world’s fastest-growing tourism cities, making a marked improvement from last year’s index.

The Global Destinations Cities Index 2017 produced by the U.S.-based payment technology company Mastercard said foreign arrivals to Hanoi grew 16.4 percent between 2009 and 2016, after Osaka, Chengdu, Colombo, Abu Dhabi, Jakarta and Tokyo.

Jakarta and Hanoi’s arrival in the top 10 point to Southeast Asia’s rising significance as a key travel hub, the report said.

In the previous edition of the report, which measured arrivals growth between 2009 and 2015, Hanoi ranked 13th, while Indonesia’s capital Jakarta came in 11th.

The survey, which ranked 132 cities, found that Asia-Pacific is leading global tourism by dominating visitor arrivals and revenue, raking in $91.16 billion in 2016, compared to $74.74 billion for Europe and $55.02 billion for North America.

The region is home to half of the world’s top 10 most visited cities: Bangkok, Seoul, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Tokyo.

Hanoi was named the cheapest travel destination by TripAdvisor travelers between 2014 and 2016. The travel site estimated last year that a three-night holiday for two in Hanoi cost only $494, nearly four times less than New York, the most expensive travel destination in the ranking.

In 2015, the visual social network Pinterest ranked the Vietnamese capital the third most-pinned location of all time, while Lonely Planet named the city's Old Quarter a once in a lifetime experience.

Note on Fortuna Hotel and Oasis Hotel in Hanoi, PLEASE READ if you intend to try it out.

Fortuna Hotel is absolutely notorious in Hanoi, and to my knowledge one of the only places in Hanoi to procure short or Long Times as someone who doesn't speak Viet.

Getting to and from the Hotel is incredibly hard, taxis don't want to go there. Grab drivers will avoid you like the plague. What I found most surprising was when I was going to the Hotel, I would get acceptances on Grab only for them to be cancelled, this happened multiple times until the last guy which he stopped close to the pickup point for at least 5 minutes and wasn't moving. I wondered maybe he was filling up or had to to to the toilet so I zoomed in on the map to see where he was stopped, and it was beside a police station. I immediately cancelled that Grab trip and tried to find a regular taxi. I eventually did, but it was this old tiko cab driver who seemed very nervous the whole period. At night, I would jump into a taxi be greeted by the driver and I'll ask to be taken to Fortuna Hotel, their faces would look worried and then they would immediately say no taxi, or no Fortuna, I would then have to get out of the cab. This went on several times for half an hour.

When I stayed there, I couldn't get a Grab car to pick me up from that Hotel at all. I tried to negotiate the rate with a cabby that was on the outside, but he laughed at me and said I was free to try and get another price from a regular taxi.

By that proxy I assume they'd have the same reaction to Oasis Hotel across the road, which is also notorious for their dirty massage. But when I went to Oasis, I asked to be dropped much further along the road, never specifically mentioned the Hotel.

A trick to being able to negotiate a ride to and fro from there if you intend to stay there is to ask to be brought to 2 Lang Ha road. There is a bar there which is close enough to walk. (Fortuna Hotel is @ 6 Lang Ha)

But overall, at 3 Million VND for a short time. That's very steep for Vietnam.

Hanoi hospital tells man to have his 'vagina' stitched up

The patient decided the obstetrics department wasn't the place to go for an injured finger.

A public hospital in Hanoi has become notorious after telling a male patient he needed stitches in his vulva and vagina.

The patient, 34, visited Thach That General Hospital in its namesake district with an injured finger on Saturday.

He noticed the mistake and unsurprisingly decided not to go to the obstetrics department as instructed.

Local Facebookers picked up on the story when it was posted on Monday and created such hype that officials were forced to step in.

Vuong Trung Kien, the hospital director, said a nurse had made a mistake and clicked on the wrong type of injury while she was inputting the man's condition on her computer.

Hanoi’s health department has asked the hospital to punish the nurse in question.

In May, a 60-year-old man also received “normal pregnancy” results from a hospital in the southern province of An Giang after going for a check-up. Doctors later said there was a technical error and several patients had received the same result.

While these mistakes can be laughed off in a couple of days, many others are not so funny.

A man had the wrong leg operated on at leading Hanoi hospital Viet Duc in July 2016, and the same mistake happened to a six-year-old boy in the southern province of Vinh Long the year before.

Other people in Vietnam have also spent years struggling with stigma and discrimination after being mistakenly diagnosed with HIV.

Yes, there were all the Fortuna Taxis on the outside, but they way more expensive than grab. I know I could have taken them any time, in fact, the first time I left the hotel, I took those taxis. But not all of them speak good English, so it's easier to take grab as you can enter the address directly. I know what Boss is, I saw all the girls there, but this is not about that.

Look, I'm telling the truth, this is not fake news. It was hard to get to Fortuna, I got in an out of 4 taxis trying to get a ride from Lotte Center Hanoi, nobody wanted to take me to Fortuna. I was staying there last month. There is no problem calling grab form Fortuna and going to Fortuna by Grab or taxi. If you do not want to take the Hanoi taxi with fortuna logo printed, it is bit difficult to get a taxi around 7-8pm. Not because of the hotel, just not much taxi going through the road. So I called grab and it came to pick without a hassel.

went to try 2 popular foreigner friendly "massage" places. both places offer full service automatically the times I'm there but when my viet friend went, the girl didn't offer.

I understand from him that they are afraid locals might be undercover police so acting local or speaking viet might not be helpful in these places.

Try to be adventurous walk in to spa outside hoan kiem district. Was told 100K for massage at counter. After try realise no special, massage also lousy, slap me a bill of 500K.

The Department of Transport in Hanoi has officially made a proposal to the municipal People’s Committee, forbidding contract-based vehicles with less than nine seats from traveling on a number of urban streets.

Defined as a means of transport operated on an agreement, in the written form or via a smartphone app, between a licensed passenger transit business and a customer, contract-based vehicles include Uber and Grab cars.

Such vehicles will be prohibited on 11 streets within certain time frames.

During rush hours, from 6:00 am to 9:00 am and between 4:30 pm and 7:00 pm, their two way movement is not allowed on the streets of Giang Vo, Lang Ha, Le Van Luong, and Truong Chinh.

Uber and Grab cars and taxis are also banned the entire day on Phu Doan Street (one direction), Cau Giay Street and Xuan Thuy Street (two directions).

They are prohibited from running on Hang Bai Street between 7:00 pm and midnight on Friday and the weekend.

The proposal is awaiting consent from the People’s Committee but its legal effect has started, said Vu Van Vien, director of the Hanoi Department of Transport.

From January 2018, in a pilot program, the department began planting poles banning contract-based vehicles with less than nine seats between 6:00 am and 9:00 am, and from 4:30 pm to 7:00 pm on many streets.

Vien said that all Grab and Uber cars are required to stick a contract logo on the windscreen, and those failing to have the symbol while running on the designated streets will receive a twofold penalty from police, on the absence of the logo and the forbidden movement.

In the transport authority’s view, the decision shows the capital’s determination to unsnarl clogged urban roads.

Hang Buom street, there's about 4 places along that street that have 5000 VND Bia Hoi. I was just there tonight actually. Hoan kiem the best place to stay as it is tourist friendly, street like Hang quat where u can find alot of delicious food.

I checked out Hanoi hotel since I was in town. Place isn’t too bad, got casino and the spa is next to it.
I tried it out, paid in total about 600k if not mistaken. It was for entrance and 45min massage, don’t quote me just check it out. I did pay about 700k for fj but you’ll have to be flexible as you fuck on the massage table. No bj no dfk, just cap and fuck. Also massage was crappy...

Upscale hotels in Vietnam will generally not let you bring in any local Vietnamese girls. There is usually a need to register the girl at the lobby for a fee. Also, the girls are not allowed to stay overnight (but loosely enforced).

Don't bother to try telling the lobby staff she is your wife. They will actually ask you to show the Vietnamese marriage certificate.

However, if you stay in 2-star hotels/motels, they generally don't care. :cool:

I did read all the other reviews and it just sounded like a pain and a bit pricey just to get a special massage. Didn't seem worth the trouble and time. Also, note that nearly everything in Ha Noi starts to close down around 11pm so best to get all your activities done early in the evening.

No, the spa is in a pretty public area so that would be too risky for them. I guess you can push the envelope and if she likes you enough, she might let you.

You can find many FLs in wechat. Negotiate for whole night fun should not exceed 150 USD.
