Checked out the massage at Bac Do hotel (entrance from Phố Yên Phụ or Nghi Tàm, it sits inbetween). Took the basic 90 min package for 300 ding-dong.

In hanoi now and is staying in Fortuna. I am those that classify into Fortuna friendly... short trip (one day), does not know local, and dun speak a word of vietnamese.

So duly goes to THE BOSS for reporting the FR (field report).

Per the emails here, the place is USD30 minimum spending and with service charge, till USd 33.50. Since there are lots of negative reports of the service quality from the gals there, i just seat at the bar for drinks (I drunk my USD 30 worth) and observe the scene... will only engage if i found a gem.

The place is flooded with ang mo. And from my alcohol tinted observation, they are spuring $$ on the cock teasers. Tons of gals and all is eager to seat down with you. Quality is about 7-8.

hi this is my first post but i have been following this forum since i accidentally bump into it last month.

From the forum, i found out about Sakura 2.

Went there twice and both time tried the premium massage at VND500k.

Wat i found odd was that a 90 ms massage cost only USD 7, and it comes with a whole host of services; massage, special salts and creams etc etc ...Too good to be true...asked a couple of quetions, but it was a futile effort, a case of a duck rattling to a chicken...to cut a long story short, a Japanese guy walked down the steps and approaced the counter to pay. The security guard, who took my umbrela ( to be stored) utteered to the recep...dont know wat was said , but could sence that it seemed like a case of "lets slughter this Blur Sotong, stays at the InterCont.." Anyway told her, all I only wanted was an hr and was then directed to one of the the many cubicles ( with a small see-thru window). She then told me the rate will be USD 30/hr...the massuer that attended to me was ave looking, the masage was terrible and the GQ was poped...hagled with her on the price, but it seemed in-grained in her brain tats its US30..so anyway, decided to go fr it...didnt want to ask her fr options, as i din't think there was going to be any, besides the HJ (dont frget the small window on the door)

Next time u in town, PM me. I can give u a crash course of the Viet language for 30 mins just enuf to bluff them that you can speak Viet and they will surely switch you back to the US$7 rate.

Its not the company ANZ that is important, its the guy changing the money for you that is key.. he probably pocketed the money himself. Anyway if you changed money at the money changing counter in the airport, then you should have noticed that the S$->VND rate is on the board in LED display so you can follow that and not be lead into a double exchange situation.

Becareful as the Tourist and Info counter guys may also motion you to their counter to exchange money and they may even claim their rate is better, so right after taking your　S$ and before they give you the VND, they will VAT.. and if you agree to that, now you have just become a bigger carrot.

In Hanoi for first timer.. every other step there is a booby trap awaiting you. So becareful and not be too Singaporean.

I'm staying at intercon too, damn boring place. Went to Thang Loi hotel for a massage yesterday, the bellboy tried asking for tip and promised pretty gal. “Both make me fly,” says the handsome baritone.

The public first became aware of Vu’s helicopter obsession when he flew one of his remote-control (RC) copters on the TV show Acapella last May.

He says that while he only started flying RC helicopters a year ago, his fascination with aviation began as a child.

“I built my first model airplane when I was six. It was made of ball-point pens and rubber bands.”

Now, when he’s not performing or rehearsing, the 31-year-old heartthrob spends all his free time building and flying helicopters.

“Flying RC helicopters outside makes me more tanned than other members of the band, so the spotlight has to focus more on me,” Vu jokes.

Thinking big

Vu now dreams of building, marketing and selling the first Made-inVietnam brand of RC helicopter.

But he knows it won’t be easy.

“An RC copter is not a toy. It’s a true aircraft that flies and operates by the same principles as a full scale aircraft,” he says. “The only difference is the size and weight.”

“To fly them, you’ve got to learn to be a mechanic and pilot.”

He says designing an aircraft takes skills that only apply to the aviation industry.

“I had to spend a lot of time studying before I learned to fly... but seeing something built with my own hands flying through the air is the pinnacle of success,” Vu said.

It took the singer-turned-actor a lot of time and money to build helicopters he’s proud of.

Vu says that after performances, he often goes home and works on his helicopters until 3 a.m.

“Most people would think it’s a mechanic’s house, not a singer's, because of all the noise made by machines,” he says.

“This success is quite different from having a hit song.”

He said that art was subjective and you could be successful by accident, whereas RC flying is different: your helicopter either soars or it doesn’t.

“I’ve gained a lot more confidence since I began flying RC copters,” Vu says.

He says that many who fly RC helicopters focus too much on the way the helicopter looks and their own flying skills, rather than on building a superior aircraft, which is his main goal.

“The more I learn about flying, the deeper my passion becomes.”

Vu says his Vietnamese RC helicopters are just as good as those made by leading producers from Taiwan, China and Japan.

He’s sold a few to fanatics already, but hopes to export and supply to the wider domestic market soon. He reckons there are thousands of buyers in Vietnam alone.

Honestly, the feeling is great, especially when you move away from the simulator to trainer planes to something that can allow you to perform more acrobatic manuevres (like the 4D ZOOM)!! Haven't tried flying Helis yet but the numerous parts involved in building a Heli is too daunting for my small brain.

Now trying to improve my landing :cool: Got some progress now thanks to the patient tutelage of my sifu(s). Will be terrible when the new office comes up and I have to spend half the week or more in a different province.
Better chiong and fly more while I still can!

Just back from La Thanh Hotel for a massage...

Drug charges dropped against Hanoi disco manager

Charges of “harboring drug use” laid against the manager of the high-end New Century night club in Hanoi have been dropped, a district prosecution office said Thursday.

Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem District prosecution office announced Nguyen Dai Duong would not be indicted for intentionally harboring drug users, as proposed by the police in May.

But Duong will be prosecuted for illegally selling liquor at the night club, the prosecution office said.

Drug-harboring charges were also dropped against Phung Lam Son, the disco’s former chief accountant, the Hoan Kiem District prosecution office said.

A police raid in April 2007 discovered rampant narcotic use at the New Century night club.

After an initial investigation, police last November recommended drug-harboring charges against Duong, who was taken into custody a month after the raid.

After being released last November to undergo treatment for an eye disease, Duong lodged an appeal with the Supreme People’s Procuracy (SPP), Vietnam’s highest prosecution agency, asking for the charges against him to be reconsidered.

The SPP in April ordered a new investigation into the case.

The additional investigation wrapped up a month later with the police recommending Duong and his accomplices be charged with deliberately covering up the disco clients’ illegal drug use.

After the New Century raid, 29 Hanoi officials were disciplined, including 12 policemen and two leaders of the Hang Trong Ward, where the disco is based.

If Son and Duong can prove their innocence, the action taken against the officials would also be reconsidered, lawyer Pham Thi Ha said.

Have replied ur PM, and posting it here for the benefits of some brudders.. Your hotel strictly no tar pao back so you can forget it! If you cannot speak viet, then the only fun on that street is you can try to chat up the 2 cute waitresses at Cafe 108 which is just besides ur hotel.

letting guest into somerset appt is not in line with the regulations and so a lot depends on the person on duty. The girls they allow in also depends on how loud she dress. At any time, the person on duty can either disallow entry to girls or inform you that the guest must leave be a certain time. Local authorities can perform spot check anytime and if prositution is found in their premise, all their heads will be chopped and you will be in trouble too. So becarful and this has nothing to do with whether you have a living room with washing machine and small kitchen.

if you are going with CO, i think u better let CO decides where to stay and what to do. If your CO is not a Vietnamese, then you can book any hotels you want and no need to worry about guest friendly or not. If on budget, book local hotels at Hoan Kiem district, if got budget, then book Somerset Plaza, Daewoo Hotel, Sheraton, Fortuna...

booking of local tours such as Halong Bay and Perfume pagoda.. book locally in Hanoi is better, many tours agencies along the street.

If you both cannot speak Vietnamese, better to stay with tour group. Free and easy in Hanoi is not the same as free and easy in Bangkok or KL. You could get chopped carrot every moment and have to go through a big hassle to sit down for a meal and order the dishes as not many people in Hanoi can speak English or Chinese.

How i ended up going to Hanoi ? It's started with Tiger airways promotion... Not too sure i got a good deal ? I booked in Oct this year. Both ways only $28.00 per pax. For 2 persons $56 plus everything in Fuel, Airport tax and Insurance costs $440.

All hotels in Vietnam officially cannot bring girls back in one. And somemore recently there has been announcement that the government will step up on their efforts to curb prostitutions. So beware....

It is very safe to stay in these budget hotel. Just make sure that you will not book anything below US$20/nite type will do. Some of these local budget hotel are catered for foreigners especially those from Europe .. and the receptionist even speaks some French. If its ur first time staying at one of these, the hotel may not allow u to tar pao (bring girls back) to your room.

If you feel confident, you can try staying at a Nha Nghi (guesthouse). I always tar-pow back to guesthouse because the hotels I stay are never girl-friendly.

Noi Bai airport: illegal taxis cheating international travelers

VietNamNet Bridge – Many cases of foreign travelers swindled by illegal taxis at Noi Bai airport have been reported recently. Travel firms have voiced concern that the existence of illegal taxis may seriously threaten the image of Vietnam’s tourism.


VND 6 million ($352) to go from Noi Bai to Hanoi’s centre

At noon, on December 30, 2008, the aircraft carrying Nathaniel De Jager (Canadian nationality) landed in Noi Bai airport. After checking-out, while unfamiliar to the new scenery, he accidentally met a man, who said that he was on the same SQ176 flight with him and asked if he wanted to share a taxi to Hanoi. Nathaniel agreed to the proposal after the man said that each of them would pay half of the taxi fee.

However, halfway through the ride, the man told Nathaniel to give VND 500,000 to pay tolls, and told him to pay VND 300,000 more to the driver when he got to the centre of the city.

As Nathaniel arrived in Vietnam for the first time, he did not have any information about the exchange rate. However, when he later talked to staff of Ban Mai Travel Firm, where he booked a tour, he realized that he was cheated, and that he had to pay too much (VND 800,000) to travel from Noi Bai airport to the centre of the city.

Dao Anh Son, Tour Operator of Ban Mai Travel Firm, said that the taxi that carried Nathaniel did not have a plate that showed the name of the firm. Therefore, he believed that these were illegal or unlicensed taxis, and that the two men were of the same gang.

Another passenger of the same flight with Nathaniel, also a client of Ban Mai, was also reportedly swindled. He was Han Mang Kwong, a Singaporean businessman, who had traveled to Vietnam several times before.

While the businessman and his girlfriend sat at a café at Noi Bai airport, a man offered taxi services to him. After he agreed to pay $14, the man led him to his car. However, after bringing the businessman to the hotel, the taxi driver asked for $20, saying that he has to pay VND 150,000 to the broker. After a lot of arguments, the businessman still had to pay $3 more.

Tran Thi Hoang Nguyen, Head of Tour Operation Division under Vidotour, said that the swindling, which people thought was cleared away, has recurred.

Illegal taxi drivers, who know that travel firms are not able to fetch their clients at the airport, come to see travelers, calling themselves an employee of the firms, and say that they are assigned to take the passengers to the hotels.

Deputy Director of Hai Ve Nu travel firms, Dong Minh Tuan related that he assigned two employees to wait in front of the entrance door at Noi Bai airport to fetch two clients from New Zealand, and he could not understand how an illegal taxi driver could meet and persuade the clients to follow him.

The driver then told the two clients that they had to pay tolls and an additional fee, including VND 1 million and USD $35 for the taxi from the airport to the hotel in the centre of Hanoi. The two travelers were frightened and disappointed with their trip to Hanoi.

Travel firms said that the swindling cases all aim to separate travelers and the ones who are coming to Vietnam for the first time. Son complained that if the swindling cannot be settled, the image of Vietnam’s tourism will become distorted in the eyes of foreign tourists.

Under current regulations, taxi drivers are only allowed to stay in an area reserved for travel firms’ employees. However, in some cases, illegal taxi drivers can go farther inside to access travelers more easily.

Nguyen has raised the question that if there is a ‘collusion’ between the taxi drivers and the airport’s security officers.

However, Nguyen Huy Luan, Head of the Planning Division of the Northern Airports Corporation, denies the collusion.

In the first six months of 2008, Noi Bai airport’s police station discovered 73 cases of subjects trying to persuade travelers to take illegal taxis. However, the violators only had to pay fines, which could not help deter violators.

Dong Minh Tuan said that his firm has sent a dispatch to the Hanoi Culture, Information and Tourism Department, Soc Son district Police and Northern Airports Corporation to take drastic measures to stop the swindling on foreign travelers.

The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism (VNAT) is considering a proposal to apply necessary measures to stop the fraud, a part of an action plan to attract more foreign travelers to Vietnam.

Let me warn everyone about the so-called Tourism Kiosks... they are part of the fucking-the-foreigner gang as well!

Let me recount 1 experience I had personally... for some reasons I was at the airport with too many big notes and I need some small notes to take the taxi back to town.. so I took out S$100 and wish to change to VND in 100,000 and 50,000 denominations.. then there was this guy from the "Tourism Kiosks" that waved me over and said he can change at good rate. Took out a calculator and showed me a rate similar to all the other banks counters so i said ok lor... he took my S$100 and before giving me VND, he took out another A4 laminated paper which shows a list of exchange rates of various currency vs VND.. and right below that page was a fine print that says VAT of 7%. So he points to that fine print and tells me there is a 7% VAT charge as well.. same same as the banks.

I told him to return me my S$100 and I walked over to the bank counter and got it changed.. same rate, no VAT.

That piece of paper is used to show people whom wants to purchase any tourism service from the counter that there is a 7% VAT and NOT for currency exchange use... If I had agreed to that exchange, that smart guy would have made 7% of the total transaction for his very own pocket.

A bridge connects Hanoians’ memories

VietNamNet Bridge - Long Bien Bridge is a symbol of the immortality of Hanoians and is considered a bridge that connects the past and the present. The bridge is an historical witness of the changes in Hanoi.

Nguyen Vinh Phuc, a Hanoi researcher, said Long Bien Bridge has memories about war, evacuation, the period of a state-controlled economy, existence and familiarity with each person in Hanoi.

Long Bien Bridge can present different images. It looks charming and romantic reflected in the Red River, especially with the glow of sunset or in drizzling rain in the north. From the south, the bridge looks shabby, typically as the first gleam of daylight shines on the stream of people on bikes going to Hanoi from the suburbs.

Each time trains slowly go through the bridge and a train-whistle resounds reminding people of the past, the period of Long Bien Bridge as a unique crossing over the Red River.

Long Bien Bridge is an historic cantilever bridge that crosses the Red River, connecting two parts of the city of Hanoi. It was built in 1903 by French architect Gustave Eiffel. Before 1954, it was called Doumer Bridge, named after Paul Doumer – the Governor-General of French Indochina and then French president. It was, at that time, one of the longest bridges in Asia spanning 2,500m. After more than a century of continuous use, the bridge is now in poor condition.

A project to restore Hanoi’s Long Bien Bridge has begun with assistance from the French government.

Between 2000 and 2001, the French government sent two groups of experts to Vietnam to survey the bridge’s status and discussed ways to restore it with their Vietnamese counterparts.

The idea to restore the bridge is to retain the cultural features and art, as well as helping to continue the life of the bridge as a witness of Hanoi’s history.

Vietnam and France reached an agreement on the provision of aid, around $1 million to prepare a feasibility study.

French experts have suggested 20 percent of the bridge's parts should be replaced to restore the bridge to its original form.

The consultants have presented three solutions:

The bridge will continue to serve trains, bicycles and pedestrians, as it does at present.

The bridge will only serve buses, pedestrians and bicycles.

It will serve only pedestrians and non-motor vehicles like bicycles and cyclos.

Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai directed the Transport Engineering Design Corporation to cooperate with the French firms, Thales and Coyne et Bellier, to complete the feasibility study.

Deputy Transport Minister Nguyen Viet Tien approved the project to repair the bridge as in two phases.

First phase: Repairing the bridge while still ensuring transport flow, retaining the middle lane for trains, while the side lanes are for pedestrians, bicycles and motorbikes.

Accordingly, 53 percent of the bridge’s girders will be replaced, while bridge foundations will be strengthened to prevent erosion.

Second phase: Once an overhead rail track is built, the middle lane will be refurbished for pedestrians and bicycles, while the outer lanes will be opened for cars and motorbikes.

In the second phase, a major section of the bridge (around 200m) will be raised 3m to give clearance to river vessels during flood seasons.

Along with repairing Long Bien Bridge, another train crossing will be built 50m from the bridge.

The project will cost VND2,489 trillion ($142.8 million).

A festival, ‘Long Bien Bridge’s Memory,’ took place on the bridge at the end of 2008, allowing people to relive Hanoi’s memories about the bridge.

During the peak wedding season in Hanoi, brides and grooms having photos taken at the bridge can be seen. Long Bien Bridge is not only ingrained in the minds of Hanoians, it will live eternally and watch stories that never end.

They charge fixed cost from the airport to central Hanoi for 220,000 vnd ($12.50 USD). You will never have a problem with these taxi's. They are available all day, but they can be scarce after 10.30pm for late arrivals.

For transfer from Hanoi back to the airport, call Noi Bai taxis 0438868888 the night before and book your car to pick you up. Any where central Hanoi to the airport will cost 180,000 vnd ($10.30 USD). You can confirm this on the phone with them as they speak decent english. Use this company and you will never have an issue.

Landed in Hanoi safe and sound. Thanks to Bro deptrai4u- Minister of Tourism of Hanoi for taking his precious time out of his busy schedule to show us around and the arrangements he made.

Have covered most of the interesting landmarks in Hanoi. Seeing a lot of pretties and beauties on streets here. No wonder no matter what, so many bros want to come here.

Here the traffic is very chaotic.

After good dinner, local + tourism food, yum-yum, then we went for a drink. The place we went to is Relax 2. The girls there are quite pretty. I have seen some Fiona Xie (as highlighted by bro deptrai4), Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan actress look alike girls in this place. Overall it is a nice place to chill out and to mingle with local girls (even though those girls are working there to accompany customers to drink). Well, not much of hanky-panky here (as it is not allowed and no ta-bao), but it is an eye-opener the standards of girls here. And I was the one who get molested by at least 4-5 girls there! :eek: (Next time must really bring a molest-proof vest there! :rolleyes:)

Forgot to say, on 9th Feb, we went to a cafe just beside West Lake (?), the scenery is not bad. A romantic place for couples. But what the hell that 3 guys went there? Anyway, it is a romantic place with good view.

Then for restaurant ngon, we have mixture of local delicacies and then I know why like bros said, vietnamese girls have good figure- most of their food are like eating Peking Duck, wrap with rice paper with lot of vegetables.

On 10th Feb, the karaoke in Lien Tri, averagely the girls are not bad. Just not as good as relax 2. However, there are many girls to choose. Bro Dream's one not bad. Nice feature and good boobs. Well, even though I was given the honor to choose first, yet still missed! However, the girl I chose not bad according to my taste. Those small small size and sweet looking one. Then we have karaoke session. All the bros doing some QC checks, while I doing brief check on my girl. One of the drawback is that (like any other places in elsewhere), girls tend to have high demand. During our session, 3 out of 4 girls MIA to other VIP rooms, maybe they have regular customers there. My girl even worse. Asked me for permission, then MIA and asked for tips also. So lan lan must give (and this part I regret because never come back after achieve what she wants) and idle for the last hour there. Overall we have not much action there, just a normal karaoke session. However, if the girl likes you, they will probably try to get your contact and can have further "checking session" maybe after finished work (midnight) or the next day they deliver to your place. Price wise (may not be market price), I found out is USD 100. At least for me I didn't commit even though I was being offered the service. (But this part really hope that bro Dream can ta-bao her and post great FR here, bro, keep her up!)

Then we move on to supper near a hotel (not difficult to figure out for old birds). We chose outdoor one. After we finished yummy supper, it is time for all the WLs to knock off and they patronized the cafe. They finished working but it is time for us to start working . Here the rule is that we can just sit at any WLs' table we like (just WLs, if not later some outsider come for supper, then will be embarassing) and it is easy to spot. Then left 2 of us and another 2 bros have to leave first. Bro ADL was quite nice, showing me the way to woo girls there, like an old bird teaching new bird, he even gave up chance to get a WL with good boobs! Just to show me the art of chionging!Kudos to bro ADL. Before doing that, we visited the karaoke upstair (those WL working at). Then, we have chit chat with the another 2girls in of the tables there. Bro ADL is gentleman enough that even helped me to get the contact and the planning for the next day done. I got the contact from one of the girls and she said she would accompany me for the next day. Too bad Bro ADL has to leave the next day, if not, together we can have a nice day. Overall, this is a nice place to hang around, looking for WL (without all the effort to karaoke) at the same time for supper.

Forgot to say, on 9th Feb, we went to a cafe just beside West Lake (?), the scenery is not bad. A romantic place for couples. But what the hell that 3 guys went there? Anyway, it is a romantic place with good view.

Then for restaurant ngon, we have mixture of local delicacies and then I know why like bros said, vietnamese girls have good figure- most of their food are like eating Peking Duck, wrap with rice paper with lot of vegetables.

On 10th Feb, the karaoke in Lien Tri, averagely the girls are not bad. Just not as good as relax 2. However, there are many girls to choose. Bro Dream's one not bad. Nice feature and good boobs. Well, even though I was given the honor to choose first, yet still missed! However, the girl I chose not bad according to my taste. Those small small size and sweet looking one. Then we have karaoke session. All the bros doing some QC checks, while I doing brief check on my girl. Price wise (may not be market price), I found out is USD 100. At least for me I didn't commit even though I was being offered the service. Then we move on to supper near a hotel (not difficult to figure out for old birds). We chose outdoor one. After we finished yummy supper, it is time for all the WLs to knock off and they patronized the cafe. They finished working but it is time for us to start working . Here the rule is that we can just sit at any WLs' table we like (just WLs, if not later some outsider come for supper, then will be embarassing) and it is easy to spot. Then left 2 of us and another 2 bros have to leave first. Bro ADL was quite nice, showing me the way to woo girls there, like an old bird teaching new bird, he even gave up chance to get a WL with good boobs! Just to show me the art of chionging!Kudos to bro ADL. Before doing that, we visited the karaoke upstair (those WL working at). Then, we have chit chat with the another 2girls in of the tables there. Bro ADL is gentleman enough that even helped me to get the contact and the planning for the next day done. I got the contact from one of the girls and she said she would accompany me for the next day. Too bad Bro ADL has to leave the next day, if not, together we can have a nice day. Overall, this is a nice place to hang around, looking for WL (without all the effort to karaoke) at the same time for supper.

Last time I was at Hanoi Hotel, some time last year, I paid 60$ to the girl for overnight, and I have never paid more at the Fortuna either. I am not often in the big hotel karakoes, so my experience is limited. If you want cheaper, you can go to Cat Ba Island where the price is roughly 300,000-350,000 for short time and 700,000 for overnight. You can try arrange via your Halong Bay tourguide, tho you won't lack support from the xe om drivers.

Yes, totally agree that Relax 2 was too expensive, and that one with you guys was my MOST expensive visit to Relax 2 so far... and I think I should stop going there for a long while. I usually pop in there with a couple of other guys and at most spent VND800k on beers only. And I usually do not visit that place more than 5 times a year because its not really worth the bang-for-the-bucks as you rightfully mentioned. But that night got a bit wild as the girls all came over and started ordering fruit punches and drinks like a fish. Imagine on Coke alone, it was 15 cans of coke (2 unused one returned), and the Maccallan was only VND1.3mil. By the way, if you have noticed, our table gets the most attention from the girls... we could have sat there, shooed all the girls away.. and got away with a VND1.6mil bill (Maccallan and fruits) but that would not be a much fun way to intro viet dishes to our new bro. But mostly, i think is because most of the girls knows me.. and they just want to come over and ask me to hold their hands or something... heh heh. But overall, totally agree with your assessment.

Conclusion : For newbies in Hanoi that cannot speak Viet but wants to try to chat up viet beauties, Relax 2 is the place to start. If you just want a quiet night there, dun ask me along. About Hanoi hotel KTV.. which I usually avoid, based on the prices you mentioned, it means they have revised their rates down by quite a bit in competition with Boss KTV in Fortuna! At one point they were following suite and charge the same rate and there is even a fix minimum charge of US$30 per person sitting out in the lounge (which I am surprised they have removed that), so even its US$5 per beer, you gotta drink 6 cans to make up for the US$30. Girls is also US$30 by just sitting down regardless what time you arrive there. So with the new pricing.. that place seems like one of the good stopover now..

Hmmm... don't know. Don't even know the hotel. Easiest way is to call in advance and check. Don't be shy. Just ask if your Vietnamese girlfriend can stay in the same room as you. The hotel should be upfront with you. However, nha nghi is always an option even if your hotel is not gal friendly. Most of the budget nha nghis are pretty much places where couples go for some hanky-panky. Vietnamese tends to stay with their families, and nha nghis are popular places for lovers to meet. There are plenty of Nha Nghi's around, if you're adventorous, you can come to Hanoi and then book your room. One of my fav short time nha nghi is on 66 Bui Thi Xuan cause 139 Bui Thi Xuan is a good local KTV and I often tar pow the gals from there, so easy to just walk down to the nn, book a room, and wait for the gal to show up.

Sounds like you found To Ngoc Van ;).... the modus operandi there is you pay an entrance fee, ranging from 200K - 600K depending if you're local or not, or how "lao jiao" you are. Then, each gal you do, you tip her, anything from 100K - 400K again depending on nationality, familiarity, "gung ho-ness", etc.

Times must be bad. In the past, they absolutely will not entertain foreigners, not unless you can pass off as a local.

Nevertheless, it's I would like to highlight that Hanoi Hotel is a great place for supper and a place to get known some of the WLs if they are not being booked (in a cheap way- just need to pay their supper). Overall, IMHO, I would like to give Hanoi ***/***** (3 of 5 stars for a must visit bonking place) due to the following reasoning:

1) Language's problem. Language is a major obstacle as even we might look alike (Asian People), but once we open our mouth (without really showing our tongues), they know that we are not local already as most of them they know only Vietnamese. AT the same time, immediately in their PC, all the prices for chopping foreigners come out in their PC/Brain.

2) It is a city that correlates living expenses with USD and automatically not cheap.

3) Hanoi is quite a conservative city. After saying that, this also immediately bring to the next topic, it is open, but in a more conservative way, meaning they think that sex is not a very casual thing and customers have to pay quite a lot in order to get commercial business done.

New Rival to 17 Saloon
Last night, I met bro retsoor at Relax 2. While there, ran into another Hanoi old-timer who told us about a new bar in town and so we decided to check it out.
Bar is called Matador, address is 39 Hang Giay. If bro's are taking taxi, it's a couple of doors down from the Dong Xuan market.
The place is set up like 17 Saloon, using the same formula, good Pinoy live band (one of the singers quite hot), and comely waitresses. It's quite new (less than a month), as such, relatively unknown and therefore empty. Has good potential, friendly staff, prices on par with 17.
Worth a visit for any out-of-towners.
