Negative: illegal means

http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/illegal

Going by your pretty broad meaning: it could be illegal to jump up and down in the middle of a field... :D

Anyway with reassurance to TS: if it's was illegal to publis picture of women in lingerie, the lingerie companies and newspaper would be fined long ago

The companies pay the women and make them sign agreement before doing that.

As long as you've obtained a model release (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Model_release), you can use the images for purposes stated under the conditions of the agreement.

If the pictures are taken covertly or under false premises [eg you promised that the images were for private viewing only], you face the risk that the subject will seek legal recourse in a civil action.

However, lingerie shots do not fall under the definition of pornography so publishing them is not a criminal offense. The Straits Times is full of pictures of girls in their underwear.

If that the case then I think those bra companies will be in trouble for displaying pics of gals in lingerie..

They would if they [or the photographer concerned] didn't first obtain a model release. For those with iPods or iPhones, there is a handy app that makes the whole process of obtaining the release a breeze. It's called iRelease (http://www.ireleaseapp.com/). I've been using it with all the models I use for the past few months and it has simplified the process immensely. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to any budding photographer who wants to publish and sell his work.

But if you are engaging these models to take pic of your products so that you can market them, shouldn't that make you the owner of the pic in the first place? Hence, no need to obtain any consent from them?

The ownership of the images is not the issue. It's HOW I USE them that requires the consent of the model concerned.

If I snap pictures of a model in her underwear and the images are used to advertise a lingerie shop, she may have no problems with that.

However, if the images are used in an advertisement for an escort agency, the model may kick up a big fuss and threaten me with legal action for ruining her reputation.

The model release form spells out exactly how the images can be used. If she signs over the rights for me to use the images in any way I choose, then she has no legal grounds to take action should see herself on one of the banners in this forum.

It's OK as far as laws covering obscene material are concerned.
