The 30-something claimed he contracted the HIV virus after having unprotected sex in these health clubs.

In recent years, a number of men's clubs and bathhouses have sprouted across town. Some have turned into pick-up joints for gay men, and even made it to the list of places to visit on gay websites for visitors.

DRUNK
Andy, who asked not to be identified so as not to embarrass his parents, wants his bitter experience to be a cautionary tale for those who frequent these clubs.

He told The New Paper on Sunday: 'I don't want another person to fall victim to Aids.'

Andy's nightmare began after he was invited to join a men's health club by his gay friends last year.

'I didn't really like the place during my first visit. It was on a week night. I remember everyone inside there was drunk and I was also too drunk to have sex,' he recalled.

'Most clubs would have a gym, steam room and cafe. But people who go there don't use the facilities. They are there to look for sex partners.'

Andy returned to the club a few days later and soon fell into sexual temptation.

It was, to him, a good place to meet gay men.

Andy, who works in the health and fitness industry, said: 'Previously, we had to go to pubs and toilets of certain shopping malls to meet gays. You needed to chat first to find out about their sexual orientation.

'But at these clubs, the men are mostly gays or bisexuals.'

He added: 'The staff are good-looking, and once they are off-duty, they are allowed to hook up with the members.'

The club frequented by Andy is located in a single-storey shophouse in town. It's about four times the size of a five-room HDB flat and the lights are always dimmed, he said.

He claimed all sorts of men - tourists, singers, lecturers, professionals, businessmen, blue-collar workers, NSmen and even students - patronise the club.

'Though alcohol is not sold there, many patrons usually have had a few drinks elsewhere before showing up,' he said.

There was something different about that night, he recalled.

It was packed with 300 to 400 men, many of them naked.

Three months later, Andy went for an anonymous HIV test at the Department of Sexually Transmitted Infections Control at Kelantan Lane.

When his test results showed he was HIV-positive, his world came crashing down.

'The bad news didn't hit me on the spot. It was only when I got home that I felt distressed. I never expected this to happen to me.'

'Later, I felt angry. Now, I'm resigned to fate,' lamented a forlorn-looking Andy.

After he got his test results, he and his partner stopped going to the men's clubs.

Ironically, Andy had met his partner at the same club around the same time he took part in the orgy.

His partner also took a HIV test but tested negative.

Despite Andy's condition, they are still together.

Andy said they always use a condom.

His partner said: 'I accept Andy as he is. I appreciate his honesty.'

Andy has since come to terms with his condition.

One operator even proclaimed: 'We are an exclusive club! We don't need any publicity!'

Police spokesman Siow Cheng Cheng said any individual or group that offers any form of public entertainment or massage services to the public must apply for a permit. The penalty for providing public entertainment without a licence is a maximum fine of $10,000.

It is illegal to conduct sexual activities in the premises. A licensing officer may suspend or cancel a licence if he believes the public entertainment for which it was issued has been or is likely to be indecent, immoral or offensive.

Under the law, it is considered an offence for a man to have sex with another man.

The maximum penalty is life imprisonment or 10 years' jail and a fine.

But there are other health clubs and spas who do legitimate business. And these operators feel the shady joints give the industry a bad name.

HIV TEST KITS WON'T STOP THEM FROM HAVING SEX

THOUGH HIV infections caused by homosexual transmission went down last year, they formed a higher percentage of the total number of infections.

Figures released by the Ministry of Health recently show that the number of infections caused by homosexual transmission dropped from 72 in 2004 to 63 last year.

But they formed about a quarter of the 255 HIV infections last year, a slightly higher percentage than the previous year.

In 2004, Dr Balaji Sadasivan, Senior Minister of State (Information, Communications and the Arts and Health) warned of an Aids epidemic in Singapore.

Last year, he also said in a forum that figures suggested that one in 25 gay men here is HIV-positive.

Yet, sexual activites go on uninhibited in unlicensed clubs and bathhouses, even though it is illegal.

These places provide OraQuick, a saliva-based HIV test kit. But results from these self-test kits can be misleading. For instance, if the test is done within three months of infection, it may not show up at all.

Many members also cannot be bothered to take the tests.

Andy said: 'It's always possible that one infected guy goes on to infect others in the club because he is angry and he wants to drag others in.'

The availability of test kits in the clubs creates a false impression that it is safe to have sex there, Andy added.

'Men go to these places with the intention of having sex, so having test kits doesn't really stop them.'

DANGEROUS

Mr Vanan Julian Pillay of Heat Consultants, which provides HIV/Aids education in workplaces, feels that individuals should be responsible for practising safe sex.

The 28-year-old programme executive said: 'It is unavoidable and unfortunate that activities of this nature take place in these places.

'Any form of sexual activity in any condition that doesn't allow for the use of protection is dangerous and must be avoided.

'The protection of our health is primarily our responsibility and we can't leave it to the authorities to impose restrictions and issue regulations. People engaging in sexual acts must take responsibility and must take all necessary precautions.'

just to clarify, we're talking house 79, Rowell and the "OKT" you're referring to is a slim fair, Chinese guy in his early thirties, height about 1.7m? Likes to talk in a loud voice? If it is, in the first place he ain't the OKT! He wants to give the impression that he is! His job is to take attendance, buy drinks and makan for the trans, calls for a taxi when the trans need one and to be in charge of "security". He's the main one that is supposed to sound the alarm if the AV are around. Great job he's doing! The AV go right under his nose and just arrest the trans at will, by the way.
Basically, he's a nobody trying to be somebody! The real OKT is seldom around.

Closing doors
They do that when a "raid" is suspected or if they think the customer is an AV officer, or if his highness the "OKT" thinks the customer always looks and doesn't take. That last reason is kinda stupid because sometimes you can't make a decision straightaway. And the people that lose are the trans because the longer the doors are closed the less the business. But the plain truth is, you're dealing with somebody who isn't very intelligent, so there you go!


'shi fu', u are right man, i think the bloody guy is nobody trying to be somebody. But the closing door part is kind of funny. As i am "quite" a regular there, and as i have mentioned: the fourth time,i purposely said those sentences beside our bro humpintime & the fake 'OKT'....still he close the door 4 times...CB, KNN, dun give face bro humpintime or me....a bit 'tu lan' cos even the LB inside see me can recognise me. Weird......
I was thinking jio-ing for all LB lovers a trip down to Orchard Tower for a social drink....can 'shi fu' come?

It is not such a good idea to congregate at OT for a drink as the cost of one drink(even Coke) can almost pasy for a full service at Rowell.
Here, we are nopt even talking about the service from the LB(mostly Thai). If thwy want you to buy a drink or you want to take them out, it will cost you 5rounds at Rowell. It is simply just not cost efficient.
