Situation is normal in most area, just alot of inconvenience in terms of travelling, crowded train, taxi not wanting to go certain areas,
I would say you probably will enjoy yourself more if you come at a later date.

If u are able to travel in BKK by taxi without hindrance by protesters,If u are able to go to Suvarnaphumi International Ariport by taxi without obstacle and able to fly back to SIN,If the MP are open and MP gals are working ,If u stay in a hotel far from the protest sites eg Stay at Rachada City Hotel or Wattana Mansion along Rachadaprisek Road, then u could still make a worthwhile and safe BKK trip .:p

Are soi nana n cowboy still open? Or should I just stay in the ratchada soapy land?
I'm thinking also of heading to Phuket instead. But I've been there before so am wanting it try bkk.

For your information, the "Red shirt" have rebrand themselves as "White shirt", so white shirt is to be avoided, particularly in Bangkok where the anti-protesters are.

Last night in ChiangMai also heard gun shooting sound around 3-4am, not sure is due to protest of due to drunken gunner......but sure is not fire cracker sound.
For those planning to Thailand, be prepare that Thailand is not like Singapore so safe. Shooting can happen with or without protest going on, and just need to be more careful and watch the news to avoid protest area. For those bro who need to and ask, what I tell you "safe" today may not be the same in tomorrow cos I'm not fortune teller to know what going to happen if the protest turn nasty.
Those who want to know future, please go and ask White Dragon.......dun ask me where is he now.

I just saw the whites with some reds having rally protesting for anti coup. Gun shot, like that I better stay at the mountain. Later boh tai boh chi tio one bullet for free. :D
My sentiment exactly! If we advise safe, later go there tio free bullet at leg, then blame us. This is Thailand ,today seems ok, later awhile more at night fire here fire there. :D

I had some news from a friend in BKK
minus: the disagreements mentioned before in terms of taxis, etc.... Not affecting skytrain and subway so it's important to choose a location with easy connection between hotel and pleasure locations by such means. It is unlikely to be dangerous, but of course avoid staying right near protesters camps.
plus: less tourists (and in particular LDOPs are usually afraid to come to thailand in such circumstances), so girls are more available and accepting competitive prices :)

Yes legal or illegal way also can get.
That's why in Thailand many night clubs or discos have metal detector gateway.

Haha I believe you really pioneer cheongster since the Regina days. :p
Many PRC travel agencies will book this hotel for tour groups.
One thing good is the under utilised swimming pool in this hotel is quite sizeable for its price range.
Big bed can have orgy in the room also. :D
Last time land cheap so more spacious in the design.
In that sub Soi used to have one "hawker center".
Demolished years ago.

Yes,it's situated along the stretch near to the internet shop. The noodle hawker movable stall now managed by the Thai-Chinese son at night as the mother retired already. And beside the internet shop is a food shop selling pork leg rice,I think both shops are owned by the same boss.Chok Dee !

As I'm posting this things seemed to have cooled down a bit. More roads are opened today as protester's numbers have dwindled compared to the first day but things could change anytime.
This could be due to the fact that 30%-35% of the protesters consists of middle class Bangkok residents who obviously have jobs and better things to do. But numbers will usually swell after 6pm when most of them finish work.
Avoid the junctions of Asoke (Soi Cowboy), Rachaprasong (Central World, Four Face Buddah) and Pathumwan (MBK, Siam Square, Paragon). Pathumwan also happens to be the main stage. All major shopping centers at Panthip, Pratunam, Platinum Wholesale Centre, MBK, Siam Square, Central World etc. are all open but will close as early as 6pm.
If you happen to be there; try avoid walking on the streets. Navigating the crowds on interconnecting sky bridges can be a hassle. From 5pm onwards the trains and stations are packed.
Hotels in the upper Sukhumvit areas (from BTS Ekkamai) upwards and along Rachada Road areas far enough from the main protest stages but close enough for you to access the night life.
A-go-go areas of Soi Cowboy, Nana, Patpong and massage joints along Rachada all open though some bros have told me less girls. Opening prices don't seem to have come down but no harm try bargain a bit.
Or else come to Pattaya and party! No whistle mobs or massive jams here! Just many of lonely puyings for you to cuddle! :o

I have no bookings on 23rd so should be in Pattaya but my schedule is not fixed so best PM or Tweet me before you arrive.
If you head to Bangkok on 27 Jan take note that their elections are on 2 Feb.
The prime minister has insisted that the polls will continue as scheduled but the Election Commission has advised for a postponement whilst the protesters are dead set against one.
Last night more violence again. A grenade thrown at the Bangkok gov's home. Small homemade bombs thrown at protesters. Yingluck is not bowing to their demands and they are getting impatient. The army has set up guard posts in several areas across the city presumably to "protect" the "people" aka protesters.
This Saturday is Armed Forces Day. Last week they rolled in the tanks on the pretext of Children's Day. Coup or not nobody is sure but if status quo maintains then protesters could get more violent on days leading up to the polls.

The reds now in town confronted the PDRC but back off upon hearing gun shots.
Right after the incident, Khun Suthep, aka Kamnan also nearly got bomb attacked at Banthat Road. Instead of him, 28 other protesters got injured.
This is what I saw from the Tv. :D
So now the third party no more attack during the night, but even in the day time.

I just spent a few days touring the protest hot spots around silom, asok, mbk and the media is overhyping everything. The mood is quite festive with protestors bringing their children out and painting their faces with the thai flag. It's nothing to cancel your trip over. Most of the protest stuff is concentrated in a few areas anyways. Just take the bts/mrt/airport link to get around.

Nobody knows. As usual in such cases there are two possibilities:
- uncontrollable anti-protester extremists. It's obvious that some people are angry and may show it this way
- anti-government people who think that such crimes will increase support to protesters (and numvber of protesters) and incite the army to make a coup (i.e. there's a video on friday's blast which looks quite disturbing)

Last night rumor of police operation against PDRC was just a rumor but that didn't stop some shooting and explosions heard overnight at Cheang Wattana and Ladphrao Soi 115 but seems like nothing serious.
The mighty whistle mob seems to be loosing steam. During the day protesters, since yesterday, has dwindled to zero at most sites only to be filled in the evenings with after work Bangkok residents. This means most of the Southern baan nok have returned home. Fatigue and fear has taken over them. Guess free food and Bht300/day is not worth risking your lives for!
ITM continue to monitor the news and social media for the latest updates. Situation can change anytime. Avoid the protest sites. They are not a tourist attraction!

Enjoy some latest pictures from the Bangkok Shutdown...

Thank you for this info. And your pics are quite revealing....
It fits with the info I get from my friends. The number of protesters has been declining regularly since mid-week last week. The risk is now that the remaining core group of protesters get hopeless and turn violent.

Just another comment. It seems that media and other institutions are quite cautious not get any party angry at them.
I've been reading news on "bangkok post" and "nation" since about one month, and has been struck by the fact that no survey on critical questions have been published.
In any other country, survey institutes and media would have published survey results with questions such as: "Are you for or against elections?", or "are you for or against bangkok shutdown?". It never happened in one month!
The few survey results published where answers to questions such as "Do you think the two parties should try to work together?", etc.. never to the key questions :)

http://sg.news.yahoo.com/thai-government-imposes-state-emergency-bangkok-111706512--finance.html
The decree, which covers Bangkok and surrounding provinces, allows security agencies to impose curfews, detain suspects without charge, censor media, ban political gatherings of more than five people and declare areas off-limits.
Thai government did not say it does not allow citizens/foreigners to enter or exit Thailand.
They're not so stupid as to halt tourism revenue for 60 days.

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I'll try to update everyone as best I can. Now let me try to answer this Q of yours.
Thailand has never been a democracy. It's been controlled by a web of old moneyed families linked by marriage and business to the Palace and the Army. Which some call the Bangkok Oligarchy.
The two English dailies in Thailand are controlled by them. To conduct such a poll, without massaging the figures, will undermine their owner's end game because a majority will reject Suthep's PDRC and what they represent.
What are the implications of the 60-day state of emergency ?
Tourists cannot go to BKK now ?
State Of Emergency (SOE) gives security agencies the power to:
1) impose curfews,
2) detain suspects without charge,
3) censor media,
4) ban political gatherings of more than five people and
5) declare areas off-limits.
The only thing that might affect tourists is the curfew which so far has not been declared. The last time Bangkok was under curfew was in 2010 when the Red Shirts occupied parts of Bangkok. That was enforced from 8pm to 5am daily. Bangkok then was eerily quiet.
Also advisable not to chiong in groups of 5? If not the police will haul you back to the station. Thai police station not fun! Believe me!
Since Monday the protests have been loosing steam and turning roads into "Walking Streets" night markets! The Respect My Vote-White Shirts-Light a Candle movement seems to be gathering momentum. Even Suthep has been quoted that he will take a day off tomorrow! Some say by this Friday the protests will be over!

Do you mean that other newspapers or websites in thai publish such (unbiased) surveys? I've been always curious to know what was really the public opinion about these topics (elections, shutdown)

Some info about the restricted areas for people still contemplating their trip like me
Police chief Adul Saengseingkaew on Friday issued the first notice under the emergency decree prohibiting individuals or groups of people from entering 13 building compounds and 25 roads unless authorised to do so.
The restricted roads are Ratchasima, Phitsanulok and roads around Government House and parliament areas, Rama I, Ratchadaphisek, Sukhumvit from Nana intersection to Soi Sukhumvit 19, Ratchavithi from Tukchai intersection to Din Daeng Triangle, Lat Phrao from Lat Phrao intersection to Kamphaengphet intersection, Chaeng Wattana Road, and one bridge, Rama 8, which is currently being occupied by the Dhamma Army.

Gov: don't go these places....
Protesters: we will go there....
Gov: ok we will do nothing......

why bother with the announcement.

555+ couldn't agree more! I think we say "chui kong lampar song!"
Say want to arrest Suthep so many times but he still openly cursing Thaksin on stage everyday.
Suthep say they are peaceful protesters won't obstruct the elections but see their supporters resorting to violence to stop people from voting.
One of his leaders got killed yesterday and he say why police never protect his people?
Moral of the story? Never believe what they say! Remember this when chionging!

I need to read thaksinomics ? you need to sit and think. fully recovered from 1997 crisis ? until 2-3 years back the abandoned building next to nana BTS still full of graffiti.
all the northerner support thaksin because he is PAYING ABOVE MARKET RATE for their rice. if their rice can fetch high prices and they are not poor THEN WHY IS THE RICE SCHEME NECESSARY ? right now because the govt havent payed them for their rice they cannot even afford to plant next years rice (that is why they are blocking roads in the north). so if the country split now with north and northeast in Shinawatraland , they cannot even produce what they used to produce (at a loss).
rice scheme NOT SUSTAINABLE , that is one reason why the Bangkok people protesting - their taxes all being sucked up and it will never be enough. you are going to have a country with an economic base consisting almost entirely of the group of people WHO HAVE BEEN SHOWN LIVE IN POVERTY BASE ON THEIR PRODUCTION OF RICE .
thai bank workers protesting because they scared the government will use their pension funds to pay the farmers . the rice scheme is a BLACK HOLE for money (even if the money actually reach the farmer and not stolen by Thaksin).
you are going to have a landlock country with no sea access. look at Laos and compare. with no sea access how are they going to bring in oil to drive their first-car-subsidy newly bought vehicles ? truck it in via Cambodia ? you will use up 1 litre for every 1 litre you import , good luck trying to have an industrial economy .
you talking like thaksin is some kind of magic genie can make money appear out of nowhere . if that is the case he wont need to try so hard to get back the money in thailand seized from him , he can just make more money right ? so easy , why bother ?
he may be smart but he is limited to what he can work with , like anybody else . and what he has to work with if there is a "northern country" is CRAP. (and he is clearly not that smart or he would have seen it coming that they were not going to let him run the show anymore)
why do you think they let the other areas flood in order to try to save Bangkok ? You know how much Bangkok economy represent of entire Thai economy ? you find out then you come back report to me. dont just ask issan bargirls or chiangmai MP workers , they all think that everyone in the world need their rice and vietnamese , indian rice cannot compare , so they are being cheated because their rice not being sold at higher price than gold.
if the country break up thaksin won't stay in Thaksinland for long because once they realise how fucked they are because of that one man they will start complaining he is not Thai he is actually Chinese and want to kill him .

I need to read thaksinomics ? you need to sit and think. fully recovered from 1997 crisis ? until 2-3 years back the abandoned building next to nana BTS still full of graffiti.
you talking like thaksin is some kind of magic genie can make money appear out of nowhere . if that is the case he wont need to try so hard to get back the money in thailand seized from him , he can just make more money right ?
you find out then you come back report to me. dont just ask issan bargirls or chiangmai MP workers
he is not Thai he is actually Chinese and want to kill him .
What got the 1997 crisis and building got to do?
The northern and northeastern support Thaksin as he reduced poverty for them.
When YL was a premier, she the one who launched the muitl billion dollar rice scheme, and no doubt it losing money.
I find out? I think you the one who need to find out more then come and report to me. See he is 100% thai you also don't know? I'm begin to wonder, those infos you get from the nana whores?

you think the current Thai banks don't still have bad loans from 1997 ?
Why you never mentioned about his achieved thru out this time during premier? Thailand managed to pay the loans to the IMF ahead of 2 years during his time.
first term thaksin very different from 2nd term thaksin. loan payment partly from reflation of bubble and sweetheart agreements - financial press during that time ALREADY said "not necessarily a good sign". IMF don't want to kao peh kao bu because dont want to complain about people repaying loans. you know all the good stuff you don't listen to the bad stuff , only the good news right ?

Thai-Indian senior businessman to be deported for joining rally.
The Nation on February 4, 2014 4:22 pm
A Thai-Indian business tycoon, Sathit Segal, a core member of the anti-government protests, is to be deported for defying the state of emergency, a spokeswoman for the Centre for Maintaining Peace and Order (CMPO) said Tuesday.
The centre already ordered the Immigration Department and police to commence the procedures to deport Sathit.
Sathit, an ethnic Indian, has publicly and openly criticised the Yingluck government on a People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC( stage. The chairman of the ThaiIndian business association, he led protesters in Bangkok's business district.
On January 22, The caretaker government put Bangkok and part of its suburbs under a state of emergency that is to run two months. Earlier reports said Sathit and four others nonThai citizens faced deportation due to their active roles in the protests led by former Democrat MP Suthep Thaugsuban.

Foreigners again warned against joining rallies or get deported.
The Nation on February 7, 2014 4:29 pm.
Immigration police have once again issued a warning to foreigners against any participation in the anti-government protests, saying that this could lead to deportation.
The warning comes in the wake of reports that an Indian businessman; Sathit Segal, will be deported for his involvement in the rally and his speech on the protest stage.
In the first warning, issued in December, the Immigration Bureau said foreign nationals should not participate in the protests because this was illegal and dangerous. Violations could result in deportation.
In the northeast border province of Nong Khai, immigration police put up a sign saying that if any foreigners were found to be involved in the demonstrations, their permission to stay in Thailand could possibly be suspended.

Thai protesters take to Facebook to target businesses linked to PM.
Anti-government protesters gather outside a business building owned by SC Asset Corp during a rally in Bangkok.
Reuters - Thursday, Feb 20, 2014
BANGKOK - Protesters campaigning to oust Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra turned to Facebook and other social media to attack businesses linked to her family on Thursday and rallied outside the offices of a property developer whose share price tumbled.
Yingluck's government appears increasingly hemmed in by opponents and the judicial system, lacking the fiscal powers to fund key policies and warned by a court on Wednesday that it cannot use a state of emergency to disperse protesters.
Four protesters and a police officer were killed on Tuesday, in the deadliest clashes since the unrest began in November, when police attempted to reclaim sites near government buildings that have been occupied for weeks.
The protesters are seeking to unseat Yingluck and stamp out what they see as the malign influence of her brother, Thaksin Shinawatra, a self-exiled former premier regarded by many as the real power behind the government.
About 500 protesters gathered outside the Bangkok offices of SC Asset Corp, a property developer controlled by the Shinawatra family, waving Thai flags and blowing whistles. "We will hamper all Shinawatra businesses," protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban told supporters at a rally on Wednesday night."If you love your country, stop using Shinawatra products and do everything you can so that their business fails." Yingluck was executive chairwoman of the company before being swept to power in a landslide election victory in 2011.
Shares in SC Asset fell 4.3 percent on Thursday, following a similar fall the previous day. Shares in M-Link Asia Corp , a mobile handset distributor with links to the Shinawatras, have also lost almost 10 percent over the past two days.
Anusorn Iamsa-ard, deputy spokesman for Yingluck's Puea Thai Party, said the building the protesters targeted had nothing to do with her. "The prime minister has no shares in SC Asset," he said. "The thing that will worry her is the impact of the protest today, and the fact employees of the office tower had to leave, on the Thai economy overall. But the campaign against Shinawatra businesses will not weaken her resolve to see Thailand through this crisis." Other stocks affected include telecoms group Shin Corp , founded by Thaksin before he entered politics, and its mobile affiliate Advanced Info Service Pcl (AIS) . Shin Corp said it no longer has any connection with the Shinawatra family. "We should change our service provider and stop using AIS ... it's easy to change SIM cards these days," said a post on the "No Thaksin" Facebook page. "I ask the people to stop using the tyrant Thaksin's products. Stop using AIS ... so we can teach Thaksin a lesson ... and so he can know that hell really exists," a user posted in response.
Yingluck has headed a caretaker government with limited spending powers since calling a snap election in December. Voting on Feb. 2 was disrupted by her opponents, and it could be months before a new government can be installed.
An anti-corruption agency this week filed charges against her over a soured rice subsidy scheme that has stoked middle-class anger and left hundreds of thousands of farmers, her natural backers, unpaid.
More than 1,000 farmers, many riding in farm trucks, were travelling in convoy towards Bangkok from the rice-growing central plains and were due to reach the city overnight or on Friday.
Chada Thaiseth, a former member of parliament, said he would lead farmers on Friday to Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport, blockaded for eight days by royalist, anti-Thaksin "yellow shirts" in 2008. "We are not sure where we will set up camp, but we will not leave the capital until we are paid for every grain of rice sold," Chada told Reuters.

Landed in Bangkok yesterday as a 1st timer.
Was driven from airport to my hotel near a major protest site (Asoke and Sukhumvit) without problem for 500 Baht.
Although a major protest site is nearby, I do not (repeat do not) feel threatened at all.
Even possible to walk through the barricades to reach T21 Mall.
after short walk, went back to the hotel thru Soi Cowboy.
Once again, I'm a first timer so I don't exactly know how "lively" it should be in "normal" times but it looked half empty (or hzlf full, like the proverbial glass :D).
After 12 hours in a plane, I wasn't quite ready to partkae, so I just ordered a beer (Heineken for 85 Baht) in one of theses bars, and left.
feel free to email me as I'm here for 1 week.

Personally I stopped reading The Nation and Bangkok Post. I find their editorial content & reporting is getting more bias as the protests wear on. Not surprisingly since they are owned by the members of the Bangkok Oligarchy thats funding this movement.
Bangkok is a large city of 8 to 10 million people. Its a large city so areas away from main protest sites people would be going along with their daily business so if you don't keep up with the news you wouldn't know there is an ongoing movement to topple the current government. Away from the capital in places like Pattaya it's still rave on! :D
Interest in the protests have been waning. No doubt due to fact that the protest movement is running low on funds so some of the paid protesters have gone back home to the provinces. Hear say initial pay outs was BHT1,300 to 1,500/day now has dropped to BHT300 to 500/day. This is evident with them consolidating a few protest sites over the past few weeks.
If you go to Central World (Rachaprasong) or Terminal 21 (Asoke) during the day it feels like some badly attended concert with a few protesters sleeping around the road whilst the stage continues blaring their anti-Shinawtara propaganda. Protest areas like Silom Road and Rama 1 Road have turned into a "walking street" with vendors peddling anti-Thaksin souvenirs alongside kaao kai jeaw.
Its only in the evenings when its cooler and the more "educated and richer" Bangkok residents finish work then the rally areas will have more people. This is when its best to avoid these areas. Avoid these areas also when the government announces some action or Suthep is around.
Most people would know by now what happened on Monday. This is how ugly it can get and when they say "bullet no eye, grenade no heart". Have you all seen a sniper head shot? (WARNING: Graphic Images)

So now I depends on Facebook. :D
There's several PAGE on this protest, and best thing, all is form of videos recorded live from the protest site.
Saw one of the video, the police whacked the protestors without mercy.
And hear say, some doesn't even received any form of money to protest. They willingly come out to protest. Well, there's many others unheard stories from the protester itself.

Hi, I'm doing a recce mission next week so might not meet you - but I was wondering about the situation in Soi Cowboy because i heard it is a protest side.
soi cowboy is operating as usual. Recommended to use the underpass before midnight. In fact you could easily walk directly across to the entrance of soi cowboy through the protestors if you want though i do not encourage that.
Taxis out of soi cowboy at the mouth near baccara and they will exit via soi 23 towards upper sukhumvit, or soi 19/petchburi/ratchada towards lower sukhumvit/ratchada. Taxis know these routes best, infact the sois from soi 23 actually lead you to thonglor as well.

If you bother to read all the 12 pages at this thread, I think you'll find the answer. However I'll still give you the answer.
Logic tells you, to avoid places which are infested with protestors. Unless you got big balls, felt not threatened, then I got nothing to say. :D
Staying wise, advise able to stay away from the protest sites. If you thinking of stay at Sukhumvit, then do find hotels that are situated upper of Sukhumit.
As for nana and cowboy, should be safe enough to go. :D

Personally I'd avoid staying in hotels along those popular BTS Stations especially where there're protest camps being set up around BTS Stations such as Asoke and National Stadium.

Seems like violence is escalating this week.
Monday was the police trying to reclaim back Government House.
Yesterday was grenade tossed near Platinum junction then more grenades and gunfire at Trat.
This morning they tried bombing the court house at Rachada and now blast at Big C / Central World.
Whoever is doing all these is upping the ante. I alwadys said avoid protest areas and tonight shows why. Big C is a major tourist zone. I have seen many tourists browsing and walking through this area the last few weeks. So I think it's irresponsible to say everything is OK.

Brother brother, what i heard is that the kids are the children of the hawkers there, helping out. like making money for their family. Whatever is the case, kids should not die. Every revolution got sacrifices, for me, i think Yingluck is a f*cktard, u saw the picture she squat to the police officer funneral, fugging disrespect la, even a kid knows it. damn disrespectful.
Thaksin family over corrupted liao, take the rice from the farmer, try to manipulate the rice market like an oil cartel, end up CMI. Then try to borrow 2 billion from World bank, to cover up. The current govt also bought up private hospital shares, then the fugged thing is that they reduce the benefits and kick in longer hours and poorer conditions for the public hospitals' doctors to force them to private sector (which they already control). Damn shrewd la.
Best part is try to sell the country out by giving the sea to Hu Sen cambodia and cutting a deal with PTT (Thaksin already bought shares in PTT) to drill oil.
I know one thing is that the Army will step in and the pressure is mounting, Yingluck will run away very soon.
But guys, we have to continue to patronize BKK and help the economy. Give more tips when u receive good service!

Firstly Thai politics is more complicated that what it seems, at the end of the day it is a power struggle between various factions and even some internal struggle in the military just to gain leverage, power and wealth.
For the middle class and common folks they are overly emotional and they don't even know they were manipulated to being pawns of the rich man's game.

Brother, brother... Why need call YL a fucktard? And fuck this fuck that? U sound like the puying u have the hots for is die-hard Suthep supporter. The type on Facebook that ask you to "fuck off coz u r farang, not Thai so not understand" when u show them the PDRC propaganda, they want so hard to be true, makes no logic & sense. Some of the things you have posted here maybe true but what are you saying? Suthep and his backers are the lesser of the 2 evils?
Taksin took but he gave back and took care of the people (learn from LKY) why u think so many support him? The Democrats have been around longer than Taksin but look at the south, which is their stronghold, its a mess. More kids and people are killed there almost daily but mainstream media just make a small mention. If they win now the whole of Thailand may have the same roadside bombings and shootings like the Deep South. If these people wanna win any election they gotta learn how to win the hearts of the people.
http://i1271.photobucket.com/albums/jj640/indianmagicoil/th_RoadsideBomb.jpg (http://i1271.photobucket.com/albums/jj640/indianmagicoil/RoadsideBomb.mp4)
Did u know that the Democrats actually spent more than Peua Thai in the last election but still lost? They are going about business as if it is still the 1970s-1980s.
Rice pledging scheme was gonna fail but YL managed to get Governemnt Savings Bank to pay the farmers. But Suthep scuttled the plan but putting pressure and creating fear that the bank will close down. GSB is a government guarantee bank not privately owned. Fuck they are even rated by Moodys! So now poor rice farmers u-turn back not knowing when they will get paid.
The kid that was killed in Trat help out at the mom's noodle shop which unfortunately was near a rally stage of the Yellow shirts. Parents knew the risks but they were making money from the Yellows that came to hear the speakers. Did they have anyone to take care of the kids at home? We will never know. The kids killed at Big C were there either browsing the stalls or passing through. Bangkok so big need go there shop? Or no other way around? Again we will never know.
Before these kids were killed many Suthep supporters were bringing their children to the rallies. If thats not fucktard parenting then I dunno what is. A day after the killing Suthep was seen at Police HQ protesting with 2 kids by his side. Now the he is using these kids as martyrs! If he actually gave a damn he should also ask parents to keep the kids at home. Is he doing it? Now its just another propaganda opportunity. For all you know these kids were killed by Suthep's thugs!

In the 2008 riots & airport shutdown. Leaked cables from the US Embassy revealed that some senior members of the Yellow Shirts were prepared to kill some of their people to gain sympathy and force the army's hand. Sondhi's attempted assassination shows the palace backers have no qualms in killing people as a means to an end.
And now u heard from which reliable source the army gonna stage a coup soon? Your puying again ah? This "rumor" has been around from Day 1. Its just one of the possible scenarios and its been stated, debated and reported openly. First was last year when police & protesters fought at Government House & Labor Ministry. Then was Children's Day when tanks were seen rumbling into Bangkok. Now its becoz Army upped the number of check points in Bangkok? Plz lah... not rumor anymore hor.
BTW u new to SBF? Dun tink so. U sound like an old hack with a new nick. Why need to troll this forum? Something to hide? Want debate Thai politics? Come out and we can TCSS over a beer.
Thai politics is very difficult to understand, so please don't try to.
Where on earth would tourist still wants to visit a country where there is "Kwai taa kwai" ("devil fight devil")
In my last visit, I was keen to watch the news (of the protest), my Thais friends tell me to switch it off, it was getting boring.
Ah Chek, yes u said it correctly its getting boring. Just waiting for one side to finish off the other so have some closure and move on. Anyways for anyone interested in whats happening. Click link below for one of the likely outcomes:

Avoid the heat zones. The tourist place are still ok.
All my thai colleagues hate Thaksin and their cronies.
Ah... So now I know where u getting your anti-Taksin/Yingluck/Shinawatra stories from. Better be neutral and not take sides.
The supposedly better "educated" Bangkokians are the ones easily brain washed by PDRC propaganda. Not helped by generations of stereotyping of the rural poor as "uneducated, easily manipulated country bumpkins". They have the Chitpas mentality - "Rural folk are too stupid to vote. Rural people (baan nok) can be easily bought out. So don't deserve to vote".
Thailand's educational system is worst than Sillypoor's. If you think Sillypoor's is very rigid and route learning, the Thai system is even more plus not to international standards.
Worst is the nationalistic propaganda that has been worked into the syllabus since 1932 and, after 1976, the right-wing-monarchist agenda that elevated Rama IV & the royals to unquestionable god-like status.
You are posted there for 2 years? Good for you. Thailand is a very diverse and rich nation. Get out and mix more with the Thais and not only those in your offices but stay away from their politics.

I agree with this Bro that the Thai politics are too sophisticated for us outsider to make a comment. Not only has it split people, it have split family members with different political allegiances. It is a walk of life that we will never understand. Having said that, we ought to treat the situation with empathy and respect that these people are really those harmless folks you see on the street in Thailand any other day. Hopefully, time will erode the differences and people will see more sense than killing each other.
For us, get in there, stay safe, have our fun and just fuck off.

Wow I've seen many anti thai gov. :D:D
My personal thoughts will be, both side are motherfuckers. Because they want to achieves their personal agendas, many died. I saw news, many wants Khun Anand Panyarachun, to become the temporary premier till the country stable down.
But again, after I read some infos about this guy, (cause my age in year 1991, I'm still playing Captain Planet toys), via Wikipedia, this guy also anti Thaksin.
So I think their political turmoils will be never ending thingy.
Was expecting the ฿฿฿฿ to weaken but alas last year Dec was a good rates compares during thru out the protest takes place.
Otherwise I pray that this mess will end soon.
Pray for Thailand!!

Yes both sides are equally no good lah with own agendas.
By the way both sides I also don't support.
I only support Chuwit Kamolvisit that joker. :D
But seriously speaking if Thailand's rural poor gets more educated and richer do you think cheongsters still get to enjoy reasonable/low priced puyings and entertainment to cheong?
If you're highly educated and well off do you think you'll slog as a waiter/waitress in an Agogo Bar or in the rice plantations meh?
The cold hard truth in low price cheonging is in fact exploitation.
Ask the U.S.A. Southerners about slavery exploitation or the Dutch East India Company and East India Company about trade exploitation.
Haha think about it. :D
Do you know why the rural poor is die hard supporter of the Thaksins?
Because he (mastermind) always give welfare to the rural poor via government policies.
The middle class Bangkokians and elites will never understand the hard life of the rural poor.
Thaksin Shinawatra said in an interview before about the rice subsidies policy.
He said if the farmers get a higher price for their rice.
Their income will increase and thus will have more spending power.
GDP will increase as a result.
SGD/THB best 10 year historical rate was around THB26.00 on 07, 13/01/14 at money changers. :p

Aiyah this one I said in 2008/2009 already when PAD was blockading airport that the rich want to keep them poor or else who's gonna work at their gogo bars and massage palours?
2008 one of the PAD supporters was saying that the poor are being ungrateful, bite the hand that feeds, by siding with Taksin coz the rich provide the poor with jobs like drivers, security guards, maids etc...
2010 was when the Red Shirts openly used the words ไพร่ (phrai) and อำมาตย์ (ammat) "Peasants and Elites" to describe their cause.
2013 Chitpas said they too stupid to deserve to vote.
Today Chuwit said, what everyone knows, its all a royal power struggle. The King they all ignore already. Now its the Queen, her youngest daughter, Prem on one side VS The Crown Prince and Taksin on the other. Siridon is like caught in the middle.
Army Chief dare not take action coz he also dunno who will win. He choose wrongly jialat for him. Army also scared police will take sides with Taksin. Large numbers of cops from the North-East has been deployed to Bangkok. If not why u think more army check points set up yesterday? All moves and counter moves.

I'm may be wrong, but judging from the situation, Thai army chief Prayuth Chan-och, seems to support the PRDC. Some asked him to become the temporary premier, but he refused and despite that he still help to deploy more of his man, to guard those high risk area of bomb.
Last few days ago, I saw news one navy personnel got caught by the police. In his possession, were PRDC Security ID card, navy ID, and two hand guns if I'm not mistaken.
And few days ago I saw at Facebook, got one police man put down his shield, and joined in the protest.

Ocha does not control the whole armed forces. The navy was involved since day one. A few were caught couple weeks ago. 1 policeman putting down his shield is like one sunny day does not make a summer.
Anyway some light in the tunnel? Suthep just announced tonight that remaining rally sites in Bangkok next week will be at Lumpini, Government House, Phan Fah, Interior Ministry & Chaeng Wattana.
I hope there is some light at the end of the tunnel. pray for Thailand.

I also want to know what is "chronically ill", so easy to say, please elaborate. I certainly look forward to your analogy..... may provide some fresh, but the price of pork remain the same......:D
Not gonna mention all the coups that have happened throughout the past few decades. Thailand has found political stability hard to come by. 2007 yellow shirts occupying the airport, 2010 red shirts at ratchaprasong and now anti gov protesters/yellow shirts/royalist whatever you want to call them. One has to be brave to bet against a similar incident happening in the next couple of years.
That being said, what is most telling and discouraging is the extreme polarization of the thai population. If you are not a red shirt you must be yellow. There is just no middle ground. Everyone is suspicious of one another.
It's sheer mockery when both sets of protestors decorated/embellished in emblems/face paints of the thai flag, start physically abusing their own countryman and at times resulting in serious injuries. You only do that against an external foe.
Even if the current crisis gets resolved through negotiation or other avenues, it will just be a case of rinse lather repeat with the same set of people at both ends again.

Agreed with your observation, thank you.
To me, this is not chronic, just a normal "cough and cold" sickness, it will come and go and life goes on. Never mind what shirt they wear, there will be turmoils to come, just a matter of form.
Guess, we will never understand the Thais Politics, leave it to them to "play" as they deem fit. It is only logical and sad that lives will be sacrificed.
I will continue to visit Thai despite whatever is going on, as I would have done in 2008 when Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang Airports were held by Yellows. Landed in Utapao (Pattaya) then...........

I think a country like China is more sick than Thailand. Where else in Asia u get a family suing a good Samaritan who brought their mother who was in a traffic accident to hospital? Been to China many times and thats one fucked up country. Anyone staying too long will become like them.

You have your POV about Ocha staging a coup soon and I didn't say it won't happen. I just offered my own POV. So u staying in Thailand most of the times gives u the right to comment and de facto Thai expert here? You mean this forum is only for u to promote your thoughts? Then start your own forum or pay some money to Papa SBF so b become mod of all Thai threads.
Since when u become so jai noi? Was it u who mentioned the Ides of March? And unless u have a few new nicks created over the last few months why bother unless u r the King Troll? U wanna be like him also ah? jai noi mak mak ah? KNS...

If you talking about China, I'm not sure. Never been to there, only been to HK.
Wait if you said fucked country and you still go. If it's were me, long time ago I boycott.
Nope, of course not. But at least I got some first hand infos, rather then reading from the net tio boh. Some infos you also can't find in the net. You need locals to tell you.
Well I didn't dissing your POvs ma. You think too much lei. I merely said I don't want to be label as a Shakespeare in sex forum ma.

agreed, thai politics is mind boggling, i have visited bangkok 4-5 times throughout the last 3 months. It's pretty easy to avoid the whole protest situation if you are familiar with the area. Most of my thai friends are pretty weary of the issue that they wouldn't even want to talk about it anyway.

Situation in Thailand is porous -mah. Los will always be LOS. I predict more killings and upheaveals will happen before everything will settle down. Then eyes will open to see who and who is to be blamed . Now the game is still moving on and nobody is gaining or losing. It takes TIME to be the final jury and the overhempthly judge, history has proven over time, over and over again, it is a zero sum game.
