Lots of husband/bf loves to keep "pic" of their love ones in private photo app or any form of storage. Usually we will reboot to factory setting or delete if planning to sell/trade/throw.
Question, is it still safe?

Rebooting to factory setting does not delete the files. It just hides them from view to be easily retrieved by those who know how.
There are apps that will shred existing data though. Do a search and decide which one is best for you.

Format it properly. I don't know how to do it on windows, but on a mac, go to disk utility, choose 'zero out data'. What this does is rewrite all the binary code (all the 1s and 0s) and replaces it all back to zeroes. There, clean slate.

The safest way is to physically destroy your storage device, e.g hard disk, SD cards etc.
In the wrong hands, data can be recovered no matter how 'clean' you wipe them. So your best tool is a hammer… ;)

What about hand phone??? Cannot trade in??
That what I did for the laptop HD and standalone HD. Dismantle and took out the hard disk and hammer to break.
Just hope that this topic can help especially to protect their love ones.

What if it is a video taken but stored inside the hard drive of Samsung S4 (micro SD run out of space), how to lock it with a password?

if the video or pic is already stored in the hand phone, even we delete them.. it is still there n someone may know the know-how to retrieve the video n pic, so DO NOT trade in the phone. At least if for me, I wont trade in at all. If really dun wan the hp, use a HAMMER to hammer the hp to pieces.

Wow, you guys are really brutal on your gadgets. Sorry, I'm a geek. Can't stand the thought of someone smashing an iPad.
Look, the basis of any digital data is its binary form. If it's a hard disk, flash drive, or a computer, the format method I described above will absolutely wipe it clean.
If it's a phone or a memory card, yes, by deleting the files, it will still be on the device. This is because all that does is flag the memory available for a rewrite. Solution? Rewrite it. Use up all the space in the device by saving junk files on to it. Delete all, repeat again as many times you need to feel safe. You may now trade in your phone. Any data recovered will be the last batch of junk files you stored in it.

Best form is not to take any pic or video.

there are so many programs s/w out there to do a deep deletion. just google.
if u really scare, use encryption for all ur files.
btw, many ppl use phone lock to lock phones right?
i just knew someone's wife remove his memcard when he is sleeping...busted!

For HDD, strong magnet is the best way.
For other format like SD or SSD, heat or break it to pieces will do...
So long the data is available in copy, people can still copy/mirror the data regardless if it is encrypted or not.. They then can take their time to access the files...

mmm... i did once for my buddy, not sure if it secure enough, basically before he sell off his laptop, i use data recovery software to recover all the datas then i shred them with file shredder, i chose the highest setting to shred em, before reformatting the drives again.
