I couldn't believe my ear when i heard over the radio that the BIGGEST EMERGENCY EXCERCISE in S'pore was CONDUCTED this morning at 6.20 am. WAT a BIG JOKE !!!
On a SUNDAY MORN and a VERY COOL AND HEAVY RAINY DAY. I do not know who is the CROWN that gave the GREEN LIGHT.
Just imagine who were on board the MRT trains and buses during these times. "Hantu pun takda" the famous Malay saying. They think the TERRORISTS are DUMB to strike at a time when there are few ppls. It's a WASTE of all the HUMAN RESOURCES.

The exercise was conducted at that timing as not to disrupt too many people's schedule. At the time of the exercise most of us are still in bed.

Yah man, if the exercise is carried out on a working day in the morning, then i tink buang liao. All the working ppl n students wana take MRT jialat. Then MRT n SBS have to prepare buses to ferry loads of ppl to their destination, higher costs for them.:(

Deep inside me, I really feel that it's a WASTE OF TIME. I am not trying to make fun of our GARMENT. This EXCERCISE involved MANY GARMENT AGENCIES and MANY MEN HOURS to PLAN.
If they are SERIOUS to know the EFFECTIVENESS of how OUR AGENCIES can RESPOND in case there is a REAL INCIDENT, then do it on a Saturday afternoon. DUN WORRY about all the INCONVENIENCES of all the shoppers and the heavy traffic.
Make it a BIT MORE REAL lar. By doing do, at least EVERYONE can LEARN from this excercise. Also we can SHOW OFF a bit to our TOURISTS that S'pore is a SAFE COUNTRY AND WELL PREPARED in case there is any TERRORIST ATTACK. Dun u all agree???

i feel that 1st we have to noe who are their target group.
1. The Forces
2. The Public
1. If the whole exercise is for the SAF, SCDF and SPF to practice, well, they shld oredi had practised countless times in their closed doors drills. Y waste time here? If wana practise 'outdoors', can always do it during midnight.
2. If its for the sake of public awareness, well its a flop again. Cos the amt of peeps affected are so minimal. All i can see on TV was a few bangalas and some sleepy faces who had to work on Sunday morning. They cant be bothered.
My advice, if the garment really wan SGP to fight against terrorsim, more ple must be involved. To experience and to noe wat to do in a real senario.
No amt of $ saved will be able to exchange for lifes lost in a real attack.
My personal views. No flames pls.

Maybe the follow ways will be a better test/guage of the simulated terrorists attack.
Norminate some neutral party cilivians, give them some smoke screen bomb(not a bomb actually, just shoots out smoke) and let them decides which MRT station to strike later, without informing and GARMENT sector.
Then when they really strike at certain MRT station or line, you will be able to tell how the publics can react and for sure many GARMENT sector will be "KALLANG KABOH".
Hence reward those department that react well to the situation, and penalise those that do not.....and again for sure you can spot alots of "Sotong Head".
Come on !! If the terrorists can make /smuggle bombs here,do you think they will detonate it on a Sunday morning 6.20am off peak hour? You think they are as stupid as the one who activate this excerise?
OFF TOPICS: Quite sometime back when i used to see these slogan in the MRT by the Navy, showing a missile gunboat,it goes something like this" NOWADAYS WAR ARE FIGHT WITHOUT EVEN SEEING THE ENEMY" and the greatest joke is our own battleship is being RAMMED by a indonesia cargo liner.

Bro, dont flame me ok...
Firstly the timing of the exercises has already decided long time ago. Just too bad it is raining heavily loh...
Secondly all government agencies have been informed of the exact timing of the ex. Saw the news just now, SGH starts preparing the Ex at 5.30 am. 1 hour b4 the exercise starts.
I myself find the exerices a change from the normal ex conducted as it involved the so called "public".
Imagine the chaos if the ex. was to be conducted on Sat Night where Sillyoprean are getting ready to go for wedding dinner, bros going to cheong KTV and nightclub, not forgetting last night at Chinatown there was the light-up ceremnomny in Chinatown.
Kind of find it funny that still got some people do not know that there will be a ex during the weekend and blame the government for it.

Let's face the facts. Ask yrself the following question :
1) What hv our garment agencies achieved?
It's really a waste of time and human resources
If u were a terrorist, do u think that u will strike on a quiet and almost deserted early Sunday morn. When they plan a "kill", they really mean business.
To be honest with u, I expected the Ex to be conducted with more public getting involved and not with more than 95% of Singaporean all having a good sleep at home.
Our radio stations kept emphasizing that the whole EX went on very smoothly and ended at 9.30am. Sure everything went smoothly lar. Early Sunday morning mah. Not much traffic lor. Summore several of our minsters are so proud of it and said that the EX is a success. Wat a big joke
I rather they did it during peak hour and experience "the real thing" in handling the hugh crowd and controling the heavy traffic.
If really the terrorists were to strike, I dun think our agencies can "close shop" pack and go home in 3 hours times.

its actual the perfect timing.
the exercise was more to 'train'/'test' personnels like mrt, hospital, civil defence, etc. rather then the public.
therefore, it has to involve the least public so to avoid the mess and inconvenience to people like you and me!

Wah 0630 in the morning for excerise is a heavy thing to do a lot of blur blur sotong around some not enough sleep and things like that.
I am not saying that this excerise is bad neither am I saying that it is good, just a fact for all to see. I believe this incident is for show and after the NKF incident this incident is to show that Mindef does not anyhow allocate funds to the Army for nothing.
I have heard b4 in the US a lot of excerise r done in order to prevent terriost attack, all this is to let the US know that Singapore is prepared thus also increase the confient level that US have in us.
Bad thing is the train would be full by only 7 to 8 in the morning, I agree that it is useless to prove anything unless the excerise is done with mod and there r a lot of people present (I m not in Singapore so I don know much abt this incident). This is to show Singaporean how efficent Singapore Govt is, so nothing much to complain.
Also spare a thought for those poor guys doing this excercise,
1) They have to wake up early to prepare this excerise.
2) They will get alot of dentention if they screw it up.
3) They get screwed by public if they fail.
If they do well,
1) They get more time off and block leave.
2) They get praised by their immediate boss (CO, OC, CSM, RSM, S1 to S4 and lastly good comments by public)
All of the above is not important except for the time off and days off after the stand down. I believe most of you have completed or still in the NS so all of u do know how much days off and time off means to you during that time.
Just my 2 cents of thoughts no flaming please.

Lets be fair. Its held during off-peak hours and we complain it doesnt affect enough people. if it was held during peak hours we will cow peh cow bu over the inconveniences and disruptions to our schedules. Anyway it was already announced that the next one will be during peak hours...so guys...heres your wish...:p
Whether it was an Exercise in futility or not will be deliberated till the cows come home, but imo, its better than not doing it.
I was mobilised by SPF and spent 8 hours of my precious Sunday in station..and im not even complaining :(

wrt to the exercise...me no comment...
it probably for the various agencies to 'practice' their SOPs...
wrt the suggestion...me agree wif it...
give some clowns cans of smoke bombs...
then see the various agencies handle the panic and chaos...during peak hours...
tat way...no such thing as 'already prepared' for the exercise...
oso...me got chance to go for some TN action...
then claim tat got stuck in traffic and chaos...hehe...

lol.....i think the garment did the right thing at the right time, not i support garment but i think they have thought of all concequences, if ex on peak hours and on weekdays , more ppl will complaint, why on peak hours not on off peak hours.....ppl are hard to satisfy, i think the main issue is to test drive their system first, see can jalan or not? to me i think is a success, if dun try we will suffer one day, good job garment........... just my own personal view. if really osama come and bomb us then we also cry father cry mother , by then too late, and tell osama pls bomb us at morning in future try to avoid peak hours........

Frankly, i was watching the coverage of this dumb-ass exercise on last night's news and it disappoint me deeply that our local govt will waste such a huge manpower and money on conducting something like this.
Firstly, it is a non-realistic reflection on an actual terrorist attack.
All the so-called "public" in the exercise are volunteers and they already have been brief what to do. Hence, everything seems so calm and steady. Come on, if a bomb really goes off in the MRT or bus, you think everyone will behave in such an orderly mannerism??? I bet everyone of us will be running our ass off finding the quickest exit while pushing and shoving along the way!
Secondly, we guys all know that the SAF, SCDF and POLICE are all famous for "wayang-ing".
We can't deny it. Whenever there's a minister or overseas guests attending such a major exercise, we all will be reminded to put on a "good-show" for them. Yesterday's exercise was attended by the London Traffic Police Chief and of course we had to put on the best WAYANG show for him.
Personally, I believe there are no ways to prevent any terrorist attacks.
The best way for the public to prepare when such an attack happens is through mass public education - just like when SARS happens. Articles and TV programs on terrorism and types of possible attacks will definitely help the public understand better.
People read, watch and talk about it and through such mass communications, everyone will at least know the very basic of what-to-dos, even the elderly.
To conduct such an exercise is basically our local govt way to show off to the overseas guests that Singapore is steady and ready.... but in fact, these overseas guests never realized that it was all but just a OSCAR-WINNING WAYANG SHOW.
Disclaimer:
The above are just my 1 cents worth of personal thoughts.

well i believe all bros here went through army... so we know how many times we drilled n drilled till the 'wayang' is perfect... so we all know this emergency exercise is just for show... but then it's good pratise for them oso... should the real thing happen at least they have an idea what to do rather than all talk but no do.... i believed the timing is just for them to trial before they have the exercise during peak hours as not to embrassed themsleves should they cock up... show anot, at least they bother to put up a show for us....

The Idea for this first drill is
1.Mainly to test the communication and cooperation between the agencies. In other words, see what will cock up.
(After all each agency must have practiced 1001 time on their own liao.)
2.Add in a little bit of the public to test water first plus add in a little random factor so the personnel's involved can get some exp.
So in actual fact this was a test water drill. Just my 2 cents worth. Cheers.

It's ok to test water but over the radio and medias, severals Minsters so proud and boastful over the Ex and kept saying tat it was a success. Buay tahan.
Try lar, do it on a busy Sat aftnn and see how fast they can respond lor.
Or better still, like one bro suggested, distribute several smoke bombs out to some volunteers and allows them to as and when let go these bombs lor. Den we really call this a real test and see how fast they can react. I'll be the 1st one to volunteer. Haha

Well election is around the corner. Since Sept 11, terrorism is a topic which is conveniently brought up time and again. To show how big brother is effective in fighting terrorism amidst a sluggish economy. Big brother hopes to win political milage and subsequently voters' manate to rule for another 5 years.
Well honestly I don't really bother about the exercise. What I am waiting for is ER shares. Of course, after ER shares, cost of living will go again. Woes. Woes.

Well, I really hope tat our garment will take up our challenge to distribute smoke bombs before they conducts any further EX.
I dunno whether some of our older bros can recall? In the 80s, our garment always conduct IS Ex yrly. They formed 2 parties. The Saf personnels are the rioters and the police - the law enforcement officers.
These Ex took part in various parts of S'pore. They really "wack each other". The police with full gear and used tear gas and the rioters with sticks and poles. Understand tat in some of the Ex, some personnels were injured in the process. Siok man. Damn cool.
Yesterday, our Health Minster announced tat there they
will conduct a chemical or biliogical test tis yr. B4 doing so, I hope these smoke bombs issue will be tabled in parliament to really test the effectiveness of all our agencies.
Maybe tis time they wont do it so early lor. They will conduct it on a Sunday nite at 11.45pm during the last MRT and bus services and almost deserted roads and bus interchanges.. Ha ha

Frankly, i was watching the coverage of this dumb-ass exercise on last night's news and it disappoint me deeply that our local govt will waste such a huge manpower and money on conducting something like this.
Firstly, it is a non-realistic reflection on an actual terrorist attack.
And your fucking disappointment with the non-realism of the exercise was gathered from TV coverage??? Were you at any of the "incident" areas to personally experience the going on??? Or it's just a lame couch potato 1-cent remark???
All the so-called "public" in the exercise are volunteers and they already have been brief what to do. Hence, everything seems so calm and steady. Come on, if a bomb really goes off in the MRT or bus, you think everyone will behave in such an orderly mannerism??? I bet everyone of us will be running our ass off finding the quickest exit while pushing and shoving along the way!

The exercise is not just for the English visitor. And while it was a wayang as you so succinctly put it, you obviously are just a common foot soldier who is at the bottom of the food chain executing orders and following commands. This so-called wayang is an exercise for the commanders of the various government agencies to test their command and operational structures and see if clowns like you are carrying out orders as told. I don't blame putz for their nubile ignorance.
Personally, I believe there are no ways to prevent any terrorist attacks.
The best way for the public to prepare when such an attack happens is through mass public education - just like when SARS happens. Articles and TV programs on terrorism and types of possible attacks will definitely help the public understand better.
Again, another childish 1-cent remark without going through the brain. Nobody was thinking that having such exercises was an attempt to prevent terrorist attacks. It was the start for the public and the government to prepare for such scenarios. You said it yourself, when SARS happened, people will appreciate and take notice of public educational efforts because it is happening around them. From your nonsensical brain, a real terrorist attack must happen before the public will pay any attention to the mass public education. By the way, did you collect your SCDF emergency handbook last year and did you conscientously read through it??? That was a public educational effort, you know??? What a moron :(

And your fucking disappointment with the non-realism of the exercise was gathered from TV coverage??? Were you at any of the "incident" areas to personally experience the going on??? Or it's just a lame couch potato 1-cent remark???

The exercise is not just for the English visitor. And while it was a wayang as you so succinctly put it, you obviously are just a common foot soldier who is at the bottom of the food chain executing orders and following commands. This so-called wayang is an exercise for the commanders of the various government agencies to test their command and operational structures and see if clowns like you are carrying out orders as told. I don't blame putz for their nubile ignorance.

What a moron :(
ermmm.. excuse me but are you the CHIEF OF DEFENSE? or perhaps you might be a officer in either SAF or SSCF??
OMG!! Are you one of those "I-LOVE-PAP" people??
come on dude! As i had ever so mentioned so in my earlier posting, what i'd written down are just my personal thoughts. Nonetheless you are of course entitled to your equal rights to comment on it.
But hey, you don't have to sound so CURT! "Moron"?? "Nonsensical brian"??? "Common foot soldier"?? Yes, I am proud to be just a bloody corporal during my NS-days but then again, I was stationed in my unit's OPS room so I'd my fair share of watching my OFFICERS "wayang" their way through all sorts of exercises - big or small, major and minor.
And by the way, I ain't no lame couch potato either. The exercise was conducted in the wee hours on a Sunday morning and how many thousands of other Singaporeans actually wake up at 6am on a Sunday morning??!! That's precisely what the nightly news are for isn't it?? To inform those who had MISSED events and happenings around Singapore. Geez, is it even wrong to watch the news at night nowadays in the comfort of my couch??!!!
oh.... WAIT A MINUTE!! i know who you are now!!
Oh dear! You must be one of those volunteers who had taken part in the drill!! Perhaps you feel unappreciated by all my backlash. Come on sweetheart, don't feel too sore about it ya. I believe the government agencies will send you a nicely framed up "+++EN OF APPRECIATION" certificate soon to add to your large collection.
My fellow Samster, personal comments are all meant to be taken with a large dose of salt and there is really don't need to react so aggressively.
To be honest, I don't really care about who you are. I'm replying because I feel your rebuke was overly offensive and to the point of personal attacking and there is really no demand for that.
p.s. From the way i see it, you can either post another snappish reply or we can either choose to respect each other personal thoughts and leave it just like that. It's your call dude. :o

Fellows Samsters care to comment.
I disagree on this one. I think the gov was right in trying out this exercise and of course being the first of its kind - I think it was a great effort and I think we will see more coming. Alamak bros' - I think they are trying lah! Better than hold the bloody 1st exercise in rush hour and cause too much delays on a busy monday morning in January when everyone waiting for bonus lah!!!! ANyway I saw on the new the MP's themselves giving plenty of comments - so I guess the next round will be a more "siong" version! Anyway sorry to go off topic but this thread starting to look like Kopi tiam thread with flame wars breaking out ... cool it and can each person contribute a FR to make up for this? I will try to add a FR this week!

Cool, I'm sorry I hurt your feelings with my brash response. Here's a tissue...
But seriously, did you collect your SCDF emergency handbook since you're such an advocate of public education? Have say have, don't have say don't have, no need to feel shy hor???

personally, tink e garment is trying to juz let e public realise e threat terrorists poses & cre8 public awareness but stupid la... dey shouldn't haf made it sound so as if it's such a huge success -.-"
totally agree on e point tat dey might haf juz wanted 2 put 2 test their operational gear... see how well it does & all kinds of stuff... but e MRT stations tat were gonna b involved were known 2 weeks in advance... setup of operational items were prepared 2-3hrs ahead of Ministers arrival... deployment of men etc... 2 "wayang-ing" liao la... how can tis really b a success...
it's right 2 explain 2 public tat an exercise is gonna take place so tat dere wun b much of a shock 2 e public if it juz happens but dun setup e equipment so early, disclose e stations involved would haf been a betta idea..
at least it targets 2 objectives
1) operational equipment 2 see how it wrks during emergency, if it wrks, setup & so forth
2) how well & fast e officers, NSFs react 2 e whole emergency thingy...
p.o - I was oso on standby 4 tis exercise but frm e way I see tis whole exercise, it has been a failure...
disclaimer - juz my 2 cents worth & personal comment... zap mi if u bros wan 2...
