SINGAPORE:*Police on Tuesday (Nov 25) confirmed that a report has been lodged against a former sergeant with the Singapore Police Force, Ananthan Thillagan.

An ex-police officer, Sugendran Krishnan, had filed the report, alleging that Mr Ananthan had swindled his wife and him out of S$50,000 in January via an investment company, Profit On Land. The 38-year-old said Mr Ananthan had promised him an "inside scoop" of a new investment option involving gold mines in Papua New Guinea.

In a copy of the police report sent to the media by debt recovery company JMS Rogers, Mr Sungendran said Mr Ananthan had claimed to be a special aide to former President S R Nathan, and a former bodyguard to ex-Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

"Because he was working for people in power, he often threw names of powerful people to reinforce his influence and connections," Mr Sugendran was quoted in the report as saying. Mr Ananthan also claimed the Minister of Trade and Industry had signed up for the deal.

In a news release on Monday, JMS Rogers said it managed to track down and confront Mr Ananthan, "where he admitted his scam and even signed a promissory note on a repayment plan to our client for the monies owed". The debt recovery firm also said he pleaded with its representatives not to report him to the authorities.

In a statement, police said Mr Ananthan resigned from the Police Force in July 2011.

"Investigation into the case is ongoing. Any criminal offence made out will be firmly dealt with in accordance with the law," the police added.
