Finally, the day most brothers fear may be coming.
The Urban Redevelopment Authority is proposing to rezone the area bounded by Geylang Road, Lorong 22 Geylang, Guillemard Road and Lorong 4 Geylang from Residential/Institution to Commercial/Institution so as to prevent "spillover of disamenities to surrounding areas".

SINGAPORE: The Urban Redevelopment Authority on Tuesday (Jan 13) announced it is proposing to rezone parts of Geylang, so as to better manage the area in question and "prevent spillover of disamenities to surrounding areas".
URA said the proposed area is bounded by Geylang Road, Lorong 22 Geylang, Guillemard Road and Lorong 4 Geylang, excluding the parcels of land zoned Road, the lots fronting Geylang Road and the sports field bounded by Talma Road and Lorong 12 Geylang. It plans to rezone this area from Residential/Institution to Commercial/Institution, according to its press release.
Explaining the decision, URA Group Director for Physical Planning Hwang Yu-Ning said in the proposal that Geylang is a "rich and colourful neighbourhood" interspersed with associations, clans, places of worship, shops, offices and residential uses. It is also a traditional red-light area, she noted.
"The various entertainment and eating outlets in the area give rise to activities of a certain colour and vibrancy," Ms Hwang said. "With more new residential developments in the area, there has been an increasing spillover of disamenities and friction on the ground.
"In our assessment, the growth of new residential community in the area of Lorongs 4-22 Geylang needs to be re-balanced and moderated."
She added the new residential developments in the area, which have been approved will not be affected and can proceed to be built.
The URA said members of public can submit their feedback, objection or representation to the proposal in writing to the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of National Development, 5 Maxwell Road, Singapore 069110, by Feb 11, 2015.
More information on this proposal can be found on the URA website.

Any bros can kindly simplify what the URA person is saying? It's like she is refraining from being explicit on purpose. Probably to avoid any backlash from either camp which is for/against the proposed changes.

Reason is simple. When zoned as Commercial, govt can whack the businesses with licences, restrictions, etc. When zoned as Residential, brothels can flourish easily and enforcement harder. After Little India riot, Geylang is next hot spot. So its a no-brainer. Change to Commercial will solve problem without needing more police manpower. Prostitution is not illegal but the accompanying social problems can be a nuisance when scores of blangas gather. One small miscalculation and there will be another riot.
URA did say the public can appeal. Any bro want to volunteer?

Residential, those people will complain lots of human and vehicle traffic. Commercial, more human traffic the better. Less complaint less headache. Then the place will be a vibrant red light district. Keke

Any brothers can shed some light, if zone to Commercial use, does that mean that the licence for these houses are taken away after they expired?
Really catch no balls with this article on what they intend to do. Chicken house is commercial use or residential use?
As for the bringing red light district to kranji and so on rumors, nothing been materialised yet.
I read some feng shui masters saying that gelyang is like a "centipede", with the long roads and blocks of shops, it looks like one. These places are suitable for only 3 uses. Religious, food, and chicken business.

Not suprising.. although I only went there twice, I can see a lot of new residental buildings popping up.
Imagine the land developer in land starved SG. Naturally they will eye Geyland as a new spot for their condos.

It just means the designated area have to be used for commercial purpose. It will take time to transit - they won't evict residential dwellers. Commercial businesses can apply to rent, can buy over to rebuild offices etc. Commercial rents are usually higher, so over time the area will morph into commerce.
Chicken house or brothels usually operate out of residential zones, mainly because landlords cannot find better tenants. If re-zoned, F&b players like Din Tai Feng will replace the chicken house bec they pay better rents.

I had heard about this kinda news from taxi driver for over 15 years..
I heard there initially wanted to shift to somewhere near sembawang..
Don't they need to build some kinda residence units for this kinda purpose?
Private housing no longer cheap in Singapore, and HDB-type of houses is not for "commerical-use" too..
Perhaps they would recycle some of the JTC units?
Many JTC units had been converted to FW hostels.
The take-up rate of JTC unit badly hit when the manufacturing industries into the sunset...

I guess vice will still be around. It is just whether where it will be located. In odd number lane? High possibility as the even number will have no residential. As long no residential, commercial can include ktv beer bars or night club. You can say the men need sex but you cannot denied the women needs more than the men. Any policy implemented, only the shrewd women will exploit it and the really needed help women will suffer and their son bros husband or uncle will be the victim. But one cannot simply do away with these rules bcos the really needed help women will be the first to suffer.

The process have already started. Many beer license have been revoked. Many of the kopitiams are dry now. First the government revoked the beer license and reduce the customer base. No point protesting the process have started and Geylang will wither away into history.

Conventional wisdom suggests that the red light district should be concentrated in one area or a few areas if the place is big, for the ease of control. This is the case with many countries.
Being a small country, GL theoretically serves that purpose. But city planners noticed a "dangerous" shift in the demographics around GL as well as certain unnatural congregation, and are therefore planning pre-emptive actions to rezone the said area.
Remember those days where Telok Kurau was also a well-known red light district? Today it is clean due to the "forced" migration of activities.
Expert city planners suggest looking for 2 to 3 locations to serve as mini-hubs. It is more troublesome in managing but the risk of any significant upheaval in any location will be practically zero.

How about this? A 7 floor commercail bldg with girls of different countries, signboards hanged on lift lobby. Something of L1 PRC $50 to $200. L2 Thai girls $50 to $80 and so on.
Same principlines apply to a multi religious hall. Both cant work. Lets return to the basic shall we? Side track mine friend I saw this in Internet.

CLAMPING DOWN VICE IN GEYLANG has been the biggest mistake the SPF had ever made since independence and they have been regretting every minute of it. So much efforts and planning to demarcate and contain high risks activities in certain areas for better control and response were put to waste by the decisions of a few high flyers to showcase themselves. They simply ignored winning formulas that had worked for years.
Now that a new commissioner is in place, major changes will be expected or if bigger incidents like little india riots happen at areas that the SPF least expected, good luck. Good were the good old days of peaceful Singapore, and when major crime happened at the marked areas, it would be cordoned off within minutes, i.e. no escape... now... it's free for all as SPF have forced criminals and illegal activities to disperse.

Kind of agree. No matter how bad the evil people may be, let them have a place to call home, and make sure they don't come out of it to create trouble. Anything happens, you know where to find them. There, they self regulate, and the biggest boss answers to the government. Of cos, no running from tax :D
These so call scholars do no know the rules of the society will be stirring up a hornet nest and with the influx of PRC FTs, they are in for a tough election as these crappy people will be operating from HDBs and areas that are suppose to be off limits.

PRC FL is just the beginning and will end soon as China picks up its pace to become the economic leader. With such lousy policing in a 1st world country, Singapore has been the most popular place for vice and will be attracting the up and coming 3rd world countries. In the past, the FL come in fear, and live in fear daily in GL... now they roam free... news has spread.. We shall be welcoming a rapid increase in the illegal tans, viets and thais very soon...
I really hope the SPF wakes up fast....
And the URA plans of moving vice to the North, will over take the cleaning of Vice in GL as the biggest mistakes Singapore ever made since Raffles....

China become economic leader? hahahaha, not in my life time. You should see how many FLs there are in china it self. Singapore becoming a vice centre? Yes, no thanks to the policies of FTs coming in. There is no way you can stop so many new FLs coming in all the time. Visa requirement is only a temp measure. These FL all they need to do is change a passport and here they come again.
As for moving the vice area from GL, it is a bad idea. Up north, people would not want to travel so far up, no nice makan places and inconvenient. Imagine want a Fuck, go all the way up, spending all the money and time. And less of fun. People will still go places where they find it convenient. And such places will grow, perhaps in HDB areas, as seen recently in many reports in newspapers.
These FLs and WL need to make a living, so it is better to leave them as it is, control them in that place rather than asking them to leave and restart else where while some decided to make other places to do their business and make a hell for all.

You talking about Kranji? No nice food, too far from residential areas. Not convenient. It may not work out at all. Customer chose their locations, not government. May end up this trade get spread to all over HDB areas. End up more trouble for them
