TAIPEI, Taiwan - Local broadcasting media refused to air Taiwanese-born singer Michael Huang's music due to his recent tip-offs on pro-independent Taiwan entertainers to mainland Chinese authorities on Wednesday.

Huang's music was banned from local media stations, with Super FM98.5 Broadcasting Corp. being the first to enact the ban. Many have expressed their refusal to continue playing the singer's works.

According to local media, screenshots of a conversation between representatives from South Korean entertainment group JYP and a local Chinese entertainment agent was made public on Weibo, a Chinese social media platform. The conversation revealed that Chinese television station Anhui TV has banned Chou Tzu-yu, a Taiwanese member of the South Korean girl group Twice, from performing in Anhui TV's Spring Festival programme.

Anhui TV has also demanded that JYP return its deposits for the event, totaling RMB 100,000 (around NT$500,000 or S$21,500). JYP refused to meet the demands under grounds of protecting its entertainers.

However, JYP still extended an olive branch of sorts, expressing their plans to let Anhui TV invite other entertainers under their banner to make appearances for a discounted fee.

Huang has also previously exposed TV host NONO to Chinese authorities, after the host made public on Facebook his allegiances toward and support for pro-Taiwan independence activist and New Power Party legislator candidate, Huang Kuo-chang.

NONO expressed concern over facing a difficult road ahead entering the Chinese entertainment industry, and deleted related posts, knowing that he will enrage Taiwanese supporters, reported local media.

A National Priority

Chuai Bao, a Chinese entertainment agent who had invited Twice to the mainland, confirmed the news on his Weibo social media account, through a series of the screenshots of the conversation.

"The whole matter has been elevated to a national level on rights, therefore the contract isn't the priority anymore," Chuai Bao said. The issue has been handed over to his lawyers, according to local media.

The screenshots were also removed by Chuai Bao from his Weibo account.

In the released screenshots, JYP had claimed that it could not make a choice between Taiwan and China, a claim that was shot down by Chuai Bao, who concluded that JYP supported a pro-independent Taiwan as a result.
