Time wasn't on my side however. When Friday rolled around, my brother Bryan and I was in for a big surprise.

I came out of my bedroom in the evening, attracted to a delicious smell wafting in from the kitchen. When I walked in however, I found myself facing an unfamiliar person attending the stove. He was older, about 40ish, with short cropped hair and a bright smile.

Strange man: Hey there, uh, Bryan?
Me: Brandon.
Strange man: Oh, yes, the younger boy. Hello. I'm John.
Me: Hi John. Meet foot.
John: Foot? Foot who?
Me: Foot in your ass, if you don't tell me who the fuck are you and what are you doing in mum's apron!

At that moment, mum appeared behind me.

Mum: Brandon? I didn't know you were home. This is John.

I just looked at Mum, confused.

Mum: Um... John is a colleague from work. We've been, um... seeing each other.

I just gawked at her.

Mum: I'll explain over dinner okay? Why don't you shower first.

When I reappeared at the dining area after showering, Bryan was already sitting at the table, glaring daggers at John. However, both John and Mum didn't seem to notice his open hostility. They only seem to have eyes for each other.

John waited until I took my seat beside Bryan before speaking.

John: I want you boys to know that I understand this might be a confusing time for you. I want to assure you that I am not here to replace your father. He is and always will be your one and only. However, it's been 2 years since his death and your mother has grieved enough and is finally ready to move on. I only want to make her happy and I want the best for you two. I myself have lost my wife 10 years ago and I know how it feels like...

Bla, bla, bla. Long story short, John's joining the family. I periodically stole glances at Bryan and mum. Bryan seemed to keep glancing at her, as if expecting a more appropriate explanation. If mum noticed it, she didn't show it.

In the months after that, there was a flurry of preparations and appointments as the wedding date drew near. The day before the reception, mum sat Bryan and me down for a talk.

Mum: I need to know if both of you are okay with this.

I just shrugged.

Me: John seems nice.
Mum: He is. I hope you will be able to get along with him.

She shifted her attention to Bryan.

Mum: Bryan?
Bryan: Whatever. You just do whatever you want anyway.
Mum: Dear, please understand. I couldn't go on like that.
Bryan: What about me?
Mum: You'll always be my son and I'll always love you.
Bryan: That's it? Nothing more?
Mum: Nothing more. We've talked about this. You must understand.

Walao, they talk like I'm just there as a vase of flowers. Anyway, Bryan just nodded, shed a few tears, and we all hugged.

The page turns to a new chapter in our life.

The wedding went through without a hitch. Then mum and John took a month off for their honeymoon. After that, things pretty much went back to normal, we were like a complete family again.

Pretty soon, I turned 15. Bryan became 17, and started to take his studies more seriously as his O-levels were coming up. Meanwhile, I was still goofing around.

Also, I also finally lost my virginity. After Bea and I initiated sex, I pretty much banged her whenever I liked. This lasted until she broke things off, complaining that I was a depraved monster who cannot be satisfied. I think it was anal that crossed the line. Heh.

Mum and John got along swellingly. Since John pulled in a sizable, steady income, mum stopped working full time and just did MLM on the side. I got used to calling John "Dad," but Bryan still called him by his name. As a result I got $20 extra on my monthly allowance. Under the table of course, LOL.

Since she was still in the honeymoon phase, Mum was putting extra effort into looking good. She joined a gym and dressed a little more provocatively at home. Just a little.

Since Dad works and Bryan was often at study groups, Mum and I spent awfully a lot of time together.

I guess that was how it started.
