Delegates from over 130 countries gathered in Beijing to discuss cooperation, trade and development at the first Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation recently. Right after the conference ended, it came to light that Singapore's Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong had not been present at the forum. Media speculated that Lee was not invited by China. For seasoned Asia-watchers, it was a watershed moment in regional affairs and marked the end of the era of amicable ties that Lee's father, Lee Kuan Yew, had so painstakingly nurtured with Asia's economic superpower .

What this means is that China no longer regards Singapore as a friend. Despite cordial links with the elder Lee's government, one thing had long irked Beijing: the offer by Singapore of its supremely strategic location to the US for military activities in the region. But other aspects of the relationship were healthy enough that the Chinese overlooked not just that, but even Singapore's military cooperation with Taiwan. Moreover, China understood that Singapore, with no natural resources, needed to keep sound ties with the US in order to survive and prosper. The Chinese readily accepted the island state's policy of political equidistance between China and the US.

Since 2011, however, the Americans have intensified their campaign to contain China, in the guise of its "pivot" to Asia. Simultaneously, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has junked his father's judicious balancing act and turned his country almost into a de facto military base for the US Navy. His words, and those of his ministers, have become increasingly, even enthusiastically, pro-US and China-skeptical, if not outright anti-China.

Indeed, on a visit to the US White House in 2013, Lee saw fit to joke about pig soup and pollution at China's expense. In Chinese, if not Asian culture and diplomatic protocol, this was a big faux pas - all the more so as it occurred in the capital of China's No. 1 strategic rival. Too often, Singapore, then at the height of its prosperity, seemed to be flaunting its new orientation, without regard for Chinese sensibilities.

After a significant period of patience, Beijing has apparently had enough. The first public sign was the detention in Hong Kong late last year of Singaporean military vehicles en route home from Taiwan. Such transits had long occurred without incident - but not this time. Though the vehicles were released months later, the episode signaled that something was serious amiss in the China-Singapore relationship.

Regarding the Belt and Road, it is clear that the Chinese are designing the megaproject to bypass Singapore. The designated Belt and Road ports in Southeast Asia are Malacca in Malaysia and Tanjong Priok near Jakarta, Indonesia's capital. Such marginalization of Singapore would mean a huge blow to its economic fortunes in the longer term.

The Philippines and Vietnam, long pro-Washington and Beijing-phobic respectively, recently mended fences with China and distanced themselves from the US. Their leaders, like those elsewhere in Southeast Asia, realize that the Chinese can offer them far greater benefits in the 21st century than the Americans. Besides, they know they must live with China forever, while America's presence in the region will ebb and flow (it is now ebbing).

Remarkably, Singapore's current leaders seem unaware of such basic realities. That leaves the Lion City as the sole, conspicuously pro-US country in Southeast Asia. It must feel very lonely.

Personally I feel SG cannot gets any better if we do not

1) Stop all government or government linked companies from doing business in Singapore.
2) Remove all "so called" ministers since they are useless in internal and external affairs
3) Better support for local SMEs and citizens
4) Lastly stop the raids on OKTs.

One Belt, One Road a boost for trade, infrastructure in Asia

SINGAPORE — China’s One Belt, One Road (OBOR) initiative holds significant advantages for infrastructure as well as trade and economic integration in the region, said Finance Minister Heng Swee Keat yesterday.

Speaking at a dialogue held at the McKinsey & Company’s Global Infrastructure Initiative summit — where he was asked a couple of questions on the OBOR, including Singapore’s role in it — Mr Heng also expressed Singapore’s support for the massive plan to develop railways, bridges and ports, among other infrastructure, to foster trade and connectivity throughout Asia and Europe.

“It is a plus for a number of reasons ... The amount of investments needed in infrastructure in the coming years, whether in Asia or the world, will grow quite significantly. So being able to provide that capital is one major step,” he said.

The initiative also signals the importance of trade connectivity and economic integration, an impact “particularly important” at a time when support for globalisation is fraying in some parts of the world, he added.

On Singapore’s involvement, Mr Heng said he hopes the Republic can offer its experience in planning and structuring infrastructure projects. Private-sector players here can also play a “very important role” in looking at how they can meet needs in the region, such as in terms of power plants, water, and industrial parks, he noted. “There has been a lot of knowledge that has been gathered, and I hope that will be useful,” he said.

China’s grand plan — which will cover 64 countries in four continents, with a combined population of 6.4 billion (about 62 per cent of the world’s total) — also presents opportunities for multilateral organisations, including development banks, Mr Heng said. “They can really have new breakthroughs, not just in providing financing, but in building expertise,” he said, urging multilateral development banks to work with governments around the world in enhancing the efficiency of infrastructure planning, designing and operations.

These banks can also help catalyse private-sector investments by adopting more “creative ways of financing and de-risking”, he said, citing the World Bank’s Masala Bond Programme as an example of innovative re-financing.

Mr Heng said: “My hope is that economies will get more deeply integrated, trade will continue to flourish, and so, in that regard, all these initiatives are to be welcomed.”

During the 30-minute dialogue, he addressed a range of questions, including on Singapore’s experiences in city planning, developing human capital, and its upcoming initiatives such as the Smart Nation drive and Jurong Innovation District.

On the future economy, Mr Heng stressed that Singapore cannot immediately write off certain sectors as “sunset industries”. He said: “I don’t think we are in such a great state to be able to say this is going to be an industry of the future and this is going to be a sunset industry. What we mustn’t have is the sort of sunset thinking.”

One Belt One Road, Port in Malacca and Kra Canal will be a economic and political driven plans. They sure have the capital funds. Most overseas projects are co-funded by Peking central gov and private sectors. Kra canal as an example, is a private company and back up by the central gov.
But the circulated pic of the signing the treaty is a fake one though. Actual company actually involed is another company. There is a actual debate on this project in one of the CHina's variety shows with many experts and politicians

Just a comparison and we compare-

US- dont invest in the countries which they place their Naval Vessels and fighting jets in so many countries. All want to do for free and if anything issue, just withdraw the troops. (Indirectly, they are colonize these countires too)
The countries get into any disputes, all they do is just to poke poke others and add petrol into fire

China- They go into the countries with plan and pump funds into the projects and also into the country gov. Example- write off debts from the countries and allow China to start investments in the country and treaties are signed.
China, build casinos in Mayanmar and Laos and Cambodia, also in a way bring in more monies for the countries too and many others. China bank is opened in Laos and Thailand too. Pump funds into the economics..

What US has done so far, just use mouth like what Pinky has been doing.
Seriously i just wish Russia will just faster crush US or US get into friendly terms with them. Even if one day , the world will fall back into communist rule, it will not be the same communist state same as the long before.
