A World War is defined as a war fought by many countries. See WW2 for instance. On the Axis Power side, there are Japan, Germany and Italy. On the Allies side, there are Britain, USA, Australia, Soviet Union, France, China and New Zealand. Everyone was fighting someone around the globe.

The current N Korea situation is unlikely to lead to a World War, where many countries fight each other. Right now, it merely pits the US against N Korea. Even Russia and China voted to sanction N Korea. So it is many countries versus one atm.

I think you are asking whether it is an apocalypse when the US and N Korea start a nuclear war.

The atomic bombs dropped on Nagasaki and Hiroshima are fission bombs. Their damage though devastating is merely 15 kiloton and 10 kiloton of TNT respectively. Why the world is on its edge is bec N Korea has successfully tested hydrogen bombs or thermo-nuclear bombs. A typical thermo-nuclear bomb does 10,000 kiloton TNT damage. It is end of world stuffs.

So, a world war? No. Apocalypse? Maybe.
