Legally, the limit is 20k RMB or US$5000 worth of foreign currencies (maybe you can legally bring 20k rmb + US$5k, but have to check, I am not sure).

If you want to remit money out of China, as a foreigner, you need to show proof of income.....very cumbersome.

What I do is, I will find my money changer. He always charge me 0.01 below bank rate. So if bank is selling SGD at 5.10, he will sell SGD to me at 5.09. Will tell him 1 day before how much SGD I need. He will go to bank to reserve. Next day, I go bank together with him. He will get the SGD from bank and pass me the SGD directly. 80% of the time, I get S$1000 notes. There was once when a Bank insider want big notes himself.......and I ended up with S$10000 of S$50 notes......

Thanks to S$1000 note, carrying S$20k out is very easy. Just dont get caught......
