SINGAPORE: A month after nine Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) armoured vehicles were detained in Hong Kong, the Singapore Government said it is still awaiting full resolution of this matter and return of its property by the Hong Kong government.

Singapore's Government has over the past three weeks, communicated its formal position on the matter to Hong Kong, the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said in a statement on Friday (Dec 23).

The Singapore's Terrex Infantry Carrier Vehicles (ICVs) were being shipped back from Taiwan back to Singapore after a military training exercise when Hong Kong customs impounded the shipment reportedly over licensing issues. On Nov 26, the vehicles were moved to a secured, access-controlled depot.

China has made representations to Singapore over the armoured troop carriers, stating opposition to "any form of official exchanges with Taiwan, including military exchanges and cooperation".

However Singapore's Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen urged people not to speculate on reasons or "impute motives" as to why the vehicles were held. He also said SAF's overseas training exercises have "never been secret" and that Singapore fully respects, supports and adheres to the one-China policy.

At least three meetings were held between Hong Kong customs and shipping contractor APL, over the span of two weeks, but no formal reasons have been provided for the detention of the vehicles.

One let slip that the PRC government had asked for the return of money stashed in Singapore by corrupt PRC officials. S'pore claimed that there is NO evidence the money are ill gotten gains from criminal deeds and declined to seize the money and return it to PRC telling them that S'pore is a country that respects the rule of law.

PRC is probably following S'pore's example with the SAF vehicles issue and following the due process of law by law.
