Re: My good friend's marriage
dear bros -pls take your discussion into another thread. i log in here is to read nice story, and maybe see if got sexy/funny comments.
re politics talk -never ending and not productive. you say, i say... all empty only. i am singaporean-born and bred. my late mother was from up north. my father was born here, but his own parents from our other neighbours down south. does that make my dad any less singaporean? or me? i have a friend. he is in law. his wife in medicine. they're amongst the best in their field. they also just became singaporean (from our neighbours also) not too long ago. this talk is neverending. if you dont want foreigners except for bangla pick up rubbish and all the construction workers and the maids, im sure the government can make it happen in 6 months. you will also lose ppl like my friend and his wife. we will have less buses on the road. less waiters and waitresses and salesgirls. some international brands will probably close shop. some restaurants also. All our ktv will shut down also. same with the massage/spa. the only ones left will be the ones only rich ppl can afford. becos only they can hire singaporeans willing to give massage. any ktv left will be spotchecked weekly since the authorities dont like having local girl work in ktv. maybe the gl houses will get together to set up ktv. product diversification. knnbccb, i lost control of myself...... bro ilock, please save us and come continue your story.

Re: My good friend's marriage
Fuck. Fresh culinary diploma grad asking 4k salary. No one wants to work in a boutique hotel restaurant offering $12/hr for dishwashing. Not a single soul came for chef interview when rates are 2k for NO EXPERIENCE. 3 years experience asking 3.2k. Where are my fellow Singaporeans? The truth is, even with a 4k pay, would you sit in an office 8-5 or slog in a restaurant serving customers who treat you like a dog?

Quoted from the article "But when he arrived, he discovered many problems - among them was a shortage of good IT developers, unrealistic remuneration expectations." loled when I read this .. obviously this Victor or his "technopreneur" friend do not know the term freelance where you can get anyone in the world to develop application for you but the Same IT application logic apply. If you expect good stuff dun think it will be cheap, If you expect cheap stuff dun think it will be good. . Lastly If you think Upgrading/Working hard would guarantee not replaced by FT? good luck to you coz nobody owe you a living even if you upgrade or work hard lol. |

Re: My good friend's marriage
I know very well the IT deparrment of a foreign financial institution that is majority owned by our state investment company. The top level management, 2nd level management and 3rd level management are almost all foreigners. These jokers are super highly paid, easily over 300k per annum. As a result, significant number of vendors doing business with them also employ foreigners to deal with them. Singaporeans are sadly a very small minority in the FI and it still has the cheek to offshore operations to Malaysia! You may think that I am talking cock but if you are in the industry, this will sound familiar and the facts are easily verifiable with an audit.
To be honest, I find it strange that folks here feel threatened by PRCs. The PRCs that I encounter are mostly humble and polite. Of course, l had also met a few terribly uncouth and rude PRCs but seldom at workplace. I find the Indian nationals who come here as 1st gen PR most obnoxious, followed by the ang mos. You let an Indian national be a department head, soon the whole department are majority Indian nationals. As for the ang mos, they hog all the TLM positions even in GLCs. I simply do not accept that Singapore has no talent. If so, we should import foreigners as our MP and ministers. Someone mentioned that we need to constantly upgrade ourselves; seemingly to imply that if you upgrade yourself, there will be opportunity. That is pure bull in the current situation. A lot of knowledge is experience. If you are not given an opportunity to gain experience in a job because the job is given to "foreign talent" first, upgrading is a futile exercise. If you don't buy it, just ask the poor souls who fork out 50k for a MlS with SMU: how far ahead are you getting in a FSI? Is it worth the investment? Honestly, I can tell you that many of them regret the time and money spent just to end up playing third fiddle (behind ang mo, then Indian nationals and at times, even Pinoy. Singaporeans must really band together. If you are in a managerial position and able to influence hiring decision, I implore you to always consider a Singaporean first policy. I make no qualms to HR to show only Singaporean CV to me. If the person is a male, I want to see the NS Cert first. I am not Xenophobic; I just have enough. |

Re: My good friend's marriage
Both local and foreigners are all human beings. We all aspire better lives for ourselves and our family. The root of the problem is not about foreigners taking our jobs but rather the policy in place to ensure that we import the skills required to grow the economy and level playing field for all.
Every country needs immigrants and some countries are better at leveraging on this external pool to grow the economy for the benefit of the entire nation and its people. We need to be mindful of the kind of foreign talent we need and to also grow our internal pool of talent. This is an area which requires alot of improvement. While i have seen the import of top talent running big corporation here in singapore, there isnt any program in place to develop the next generation of local corporate leaders. Thus we are constantly relying on external resources. These is one of the areas that i felt the current generation of leaders should focus on. I recall LKY mentioned in his rally in 1980s about moving everyone up the value chain from unskilled to skilled. He put in place a plan that take took Singapore a decade to achieve results in the production/engineering era of Singapore. Unfortunately the next two generation of leadership team or stewards did not have the same capabilities as the founding fathers. They focus on the short term gain of importing cheap labour to grow the economy. They did not put in place a program to grow the pool of talent for the 21st century. Unfortunately the economy of relying on low cost labour which has benefitted Singapore previously has cause the various issues and unsustainable moving forward. Today we are face with problem of stagnated salary for low income earners. Many complain about the lack of level playing field at the mid and higher income opportunities. The level of trust between the people and the government has also eroded. They are scrambling to rectify those issues before the next election. Will these problems go away overnight, i do not think so. It will likely be here for the next five or ten years. In the mean time, i will like to encourage those who are angry or feel victimized to take action to help yourself. Everyone is unique in their own ways. The way to differential yourself from the competition is to find a unique value proposition about yourself. How you can leverage on your skills, experience and passion to uniquely position yourself. If you are interested to know how, i would like to recommend that you read this book "The Startup of you" https://www.linkedin.com/profile/vie...file_name_link Lastly, lets sit back and enjoy how the story unfold btw Ella, Don, James and Celeste. |

I too suffered for Singapore during my NS days with some blood (donated to mosquitoes), lots of sweat and a bit of tears (I cried with relief when I was acquitted by S4). I put effort in when I apply for job interviews and never aim for the high salary or high position jobs because I know I'm not capable to manage them. So I also have to compete with other nationalities who are applying for them. I understand that when our forefathers came, they worked hard and got to where they are. This new generation, try to undo their hard work in our established city and bring their bad habits, is very disturbing. To TS, keep up the good work. This story is quite relevant and maybe you can wrap up the story on National Day? hehe..... |
