loled when I read this .. obviously this Victor or his "technopreneur" friend do not know the term freelance where you can get anyone in the world to develop application for you but the Same IT application logic apply. If you expect good stuff dun think it will be cheap, If you expect cheap stuff dun think it will be good. .

Honestly i'm quite lazy to give my take on this discussion because it's never ending.


The issue of biased hiring base on nationality has been going on for a while. It's happening on both sides. For those of us who can influence hiring decisions, or are in the position of doing so, i'm sure we would do what we can to hire a local.

Just like what a FT would do if he/she is in the position to bring in a fellow countrymen, they would too.

There is no easy way to solve this.




Leave the emotional issues aside, i'm sure if you rise up to the position where you are trusted to make hiring decisions, it's because the management trusts you.

It's not just picking someone and let your boss foot the bill.



There is a lot to consider about which i don't want to get into.



Just 4 months ago, i had to choose a FT over one of our locals for a position. Not because anyone force me to but it was the rational and practical decision to do so.


The budget HR gave me for my team is simply not enough to match his asking pay. I can try to squeeze every single cent from the project budget to get him but what about the other locals in my team ? I also need to be fair and take care of them too.



It's a very difficult position to be in and unless you are doing the same thing, not many will understand what you had to go through just to secure a new staff.

What made matters worse was the local guy was actually recommend by one of my team members.


It fucking sucks.... to tell my team because of money, i had to pick a FT. Do you know how hard it is to say something like this....


And i don't get to explain to the 6 locals in my team that i had to do it because it's a rational and sustainable decision for the entire team. Nothing could describe the look on their faces when i told them their new team member is not a local.


I also did not think it's necessary to tell them that by choosing the FT, i made sure they would get the bonus and increment they wanted, at the same time keep everyone's workload manageable. It all comes down to dollars and cents.



So does this make me a bad person ?

I know it's the right decision but i still feel shitty about it for a while but there's nothing i can do.



I started with 2 locals in the team before it got to 6 over the years and it's really really a struggle to find good help these days, keeping them is also a challenge.



The towkays and bosses reading will surely understand this




Some fresh grads are asking for pay that is well beyond the capability of SMEs.

I started work with a diploma in 2004 at 1.2k.

No OT, no allowance, no bonus, no increment for 1.5 years. The person i worked for is a fucker, but he taught me things that money cannot buy and to a certain extent, i'm grateful for the experience.





No one owes us a living.


Just being a Singaporean does not make us special




I believe most of us are not irrational, in fact i believe Singaporeans are fiercely practical. We know what is the right decision to make.




Then again why are we upset ?


We know deep down we need the FTs, so we put up with their shit.......as much as we can.



Then comes along the odd individual FT that chooses to think the country will not survive without him.

He could be a hot shot banker that chooses to pick on a cab driver, one who says our trains stink, or a nurse who thinks he's hot enough to fuck all the local girls and cure patients with a touch of his hand.


These people are the trigger which unleashes our bottled up frustration. We used these opportunities to vent our anger, and we ended up being labelled as xenophobic along the way.


Thankfully, most of them are swiftly dealt with.





We Singaporeans have a stake in this country. The air we breathe, path we walked, the grass by the road,the train we take, everything you see, we have a stake.

We want the country to prosper, compared to those who are purely here for financial gains, we have a lot more to lose if the country goes down. We need each other.





We can't exactly say we are saints either.


Have we not made tourist kneel down for a handphone ?

Have we not drive drunk on the expressway, killing entire families ?

Have we not smoke on the train and display anti social behaviours ?




There are bad eggs in every community. It's inevitable.





Most of the foreigners i worked with are nice folks, so are the locals.



So, what do we want ?



I want a lot, for example the SYT in a tight white dress that just came into my office with a document for me to sign while i was typing this.

I also want the hot client who just came in and borrowed my HP charger

Too many to list down.





We are a small and young country, there are a lot of opportunities here, everyone has the right to strive for a better life and future.



Just don't come here with the intention to fuck around with us...............
