BEIJING — Armoured troop carriers belonging to Singapore and currently impounded in Hong Kong should be "melted down", China's influential state-run tabloid the Global Times said on Tuesday (Nov 29), in its second swipe at the island nation in two days.

The nine troop carriers were impounded in Hong Kong last week en route back from Taiwan, sparking a rebuke to Singapore from China about maintaining military ties with self-ruled Taiwan, which Beijing considers a breakaway province.

Ties between China and Singapore have been strained in recent months, particularly over the disputed South China Sea, where Beijing, which claims most of the waters, suspects Singapore of siding with the United States.

Beijing has accused Washington of deliberately creating tension by sailing its ships close to China's islands.

The Global Times, published by the ruling Communist Party's official People's Daily, blasted Singapore's "carelessness" with the armoured vehicles, which it said reflected a failure to take seriously China's displeasure over its military relationship with Taiwan.

"Singapore's image in China is now so rotten that ordinary Chinese people think the best thing to do with the 'confiscated' armoured vehicles that 'walked right into our trap' is to send them to the steel mills to be melted down," it said.

The editorial, published in the paper's Chinese language edition, whose website attracts millions of visitors every day, adopts a similarly strident tone to a Monday commentary in its much less read English edition, accusing Singapore of "hypocrisy".

Singapore should use this "interlude" in its relations with China to find "enlightenment" rather than to provoke more resentment, it added.

"All incidents have causes — to grasp and understand them is always wise," the editorial said.

SINGAPORE: Singapore will exercise its “full rights” in recovering the armoured vehicles that were seized by Hong Kong customs authorities, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen said on Tuesday (Nov 29).

Shipping contractor APL will meet Hong Kong authorities later on Tuesday to discuss the matter, Dr Ng said. The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) are closely monitoring the outcome of the meeting and will decide on “an appropriate course of action” afterwards, he said.

“After this meeting, the reasons and legal basis for detention will be made clear. We have to wait for the outcome of the meeting.

“MINDEF (Ministry of Defence) and the Singapore Government will then commence proceedings to recover assets. We aim to comply with all regulations and then exercise our full rights in recovering our assets," Dr Ng said, speaking after a MINDEF event.

The nine SAF Terrex Infantry Carrier Vehicles (ICVs) have been impounded in Hong Kong since last Wednesday, when they were being shipped back to Singapore from Taiwan after being deployed in overseas training exercises.

"WE SHOULD NOT IMPUTE MOTIVES": NG

A Chinese spokesman on Monday stated China's opposition to countries having "any form of official exchanges with the Taiwan region, including military exchanges and cooperation".

Re: SAF armoured vehicles(Terrex) detained in Hong Kong port

SAF vehicle seizure: Use of shipping lines by militaries the norm in peacetime, says Ng Eng Hen

Published 5 hours ago

Singapore has preferred this for decades as it is the most cost-effective and efficient method of transport

Royston Sim

Assistant Political Editor

Singapore has used commercial shipping lines to transport military vehicles and equipment overseas for decades as that is the most cost-effective and efficient method, said Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen yesterday.

It is the norm for militaries to use commercial carriers to ship equipment or vehicles for peacetime training. Many defence companies also do it to deliver hardware to customers or for exhibition displays, he added.

"Only commercial carriers and their vast network of inter-connected ships and ports have the capability to transport heavy vehicles around the globe," Dr Ng told reporters during a visit to Choa Chu Kang military camp.

He was addressing the detention of nine Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) armoured vehicles in a Hong Kong port.

The Terrex Infantry Carrier Vehicles and other equipment were being taken on an APL vessel from Taiwan to Singapore after a military exercise, when they were seized last Wednesday.
BEST AVAILABLE OPTION

Only commercial carriers and their vast network of interconnected ships and ports have the capability to transport heavy vehicles around the globe.

DR NG, on why commercial shipping lines have been used to transport military vehicles and equipment overseas for decades.

REFRAIN FROM SPECULATION

Until the facts are established, any speculation is premature, unwarranted and I think indeed unfair to the Hong Kong authorities or any other countries.

DR NG, on not speculating about why the armoured vehicles were detained.

Before the incident, the SAF has not "suffered any loss or detention of our equipment", Dr Ng said.

The SAF conducts overseas training in about a dozen territories abroad, including the US, Australia, New Zealand and Taiwan.

Asked if there were concerns of any sensitive information on the Terrex vehicles that might have been compromised, Dr Ng said the vehicles did not contain any controlled military items that would require a specialised and dedicated means of transport.

In a separate interview yesterday, Chief of Army Melvyn Ong also said the APL shipment did not have any sensitive equipment or ammunition - only combat vehicles, radios and small arms.

Now hen say cannot speculate and talk about this issue ? Scare people will expose their mistake ? Why is China seizing the vehicles now and not before ? Why are you blaming the shipper ? So now China is fixing Singapore .

Singapore won’t let deep ties with China be derailed by a single issue: Vivian

By

Tan Weizhen

Published: 11:55 AM, November 29, 2016

SINGAPORE — Singapore will not allow its deep and wide-ranging relationship with China to be hijacked by a single issue, Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan said on Tuesday (Nov 29).

He was responding to a question on the impact on bilateral ties from Hong Kong Customs’ seizure of nine armoured vehicles belonging to the Singapore Armed Forces and en route back from military training in Taiwan — for which Beijing has made representations to the Republic.

Dr Balakrishnan, who was speaking at a forum organised by The Straits Times, did not mention the South China Sea or Singapore’s military training in Taiwan directly in his comments. But he told the audience that there will be differences in perspective between China and Singapore from time to time “because we are such close and long-term friends”.

“To put things in perspective, we have a long-standing, multi-faceted, mutually beneficial relationship, and because it’s long-standing, if you are truly close, there will be from time to time things we will disagree (on),” he said. “Don’t let single incidents or even long-standing differences in perspective get in the way of a very important, fundamental account, which is what the relationship between China and Singapore is.”

Dr Balakrishnan also urged against overreaction to the incident, when asked what the way out was.

“All I would say is we expect commercial providers to strictly comply with the law. We expect the law to take its course,” he added.

Following Hong Kong’s detention of the SAF’s nine Terrex Infantry Carrier Vehicles last week, Beijing made representations to Singapore and called on the Republic to adhere to the One-China policy, reiterating that the Chinese government opposes countries that have diplomatic ties with it to have “any form of official exchanges with Taiwan, including military exchanges and cooperation”.

Dr Balakrishnan said on Tuesday that Singapore has remained consistent and transparent, even though different perspectives will emerge over specific issues from time to time.

“When that happens, our belief is that it’s better to be upfront, and be honest about it and do it in a non-provocative way, and honestly at the most senior levels and at the leadership levels, there’s a deep appreciation that this is a long and wide-ranging relationship, and we will not allow any single issue to hijack it,” he added.

Meanwhile, Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen also took questions on the incident at a separate event on Tuesday.

Now Ah Hen said cannot talk about it . My questions here is why cannot talk about it ? Seriously something MUST be wrong enough for China to seized the military hardware . If this training in Taiwan has been going on for a long time why did the Chinese ( PRC ) not bring it up earlier ? also Ah Hen said that the shipping is also a routine assignment. So how can this still happen ? There is something that our government is not telling us . Talk about transparency .
