It seems to me that the Taxi service in airport is going from bad to worse.
I was coming HCMC from Singapore the other day and a taxi driver approached my Vietnamese friend. So, my VN friend told the driver rom Petrolimex, where we wanted to go, the driver just quoted us VND200K!!! My friend told the driver off and we went up the departure hall for MaiLinh taxi which cost us only VND60,000.
There was another incident, I tried to board a Mailinh and was stopped by the security of the airport. Of course, as a consumer, I dont give a damn to the security but the Mailinh driver was too afraid that he drove off. Again, I went to departure hall.
There was another incident, I boarded a Vinasun and was asked to wait. The driver tried to pick up another SG passenger to share cab with me!!! However, I asked the SG guy nicely not to share the cab as we were heading different direction.
For those arriving HCMC soon, beware of the taxi service at the airport!
There is a good news, today when I board a Mailinh taxi (7 seater), the starting rate has gone down from 15,000 to 12,000 and per kilometer is 10500 instead of 11000. As this is the beginnning, not all Mailinh taxi has adjusted their price.

Totally agreed with you on the flooding, think it was last Friday ... no rain, no storm, clear sky ... then suddenly it just flood on my way home, got stuck like 20 minutes (the traffic was at stand still). Quickly told the driver to reverse back and ended up at Tokyo KTV. Damn the flood.
Wow, thanks. Yes District 6 was really tough to navigate with all the new canals there. It looks like some residents have put some money into their new homes out there, and I bet they weren't expecting to have riverfront properties. Hopefully this is just a fluke situation and not a preview of the future.

Oh yeah, I know it's the tides, but in the newspaper they said it hadn't been this bad since 1960. You know that Al Gore documentary about global warming? at one point he shows a world map of what happens if the sea level rises by 6 meters, a reasonable expectation. Look close at that map and you can see that southern Vietnam becomes mostly ocean. Anyway, as I was driving along that night looking at all the stalled motorbikes and all that water, I was thinking, "is this the beginning of the end?"

You only have SGA and SASCO taxis. Both companies are linked to the Managment of the Airport so they are allowed to "openly" tout for customers espeically SASCO. They are the ones that will come up to you directly, try to carry your luggage and ask you to take their taxis after you clear the metal barricades at Arrival.
Initially other companies were allowed to wait according to certain locations around arrival that was their company's "desiganted" spot but I guess the 2 compnaies felt biz was drooping so thats why now the other taxi companies all have to line up regardless of company and without preference and wait to pick up customers.

VinaTaxi is a completly yellow colour taxi and is also linked to COmfort Savico which is a dark blue taxi. BOth owned by Comfort Delgro.
The phone number is now 38 111 111. In the past 1-2 months, all telco providers ( I think there are 5) have to add an additional number / prefix to all existing land based numbers to ease congestion and the creation of new phone lines. Just like in Singapore. the only problem is that in Vietnam, there are several telcos so each telco has a different number/prefix added to their land based lines.

However let me add this point. SOmetimes its not the Company but rather the drivers that are unethical.
Taxi companies employ alot of drivers from the provinces and it is because of this, they do not know their way around if they are still new to the job.
There are also taxi drivers who will bring you for a "Tour de HCMC" if they know you are a foreignor and think that you do not know your way around.
THis has happend to me many times hence that is why I have made it a ppoint to have a very good sense of direction in HCMC. That is why I have been given the nickname "www.hcmcstreetdirectory.com" by Carrot.
A thing to note is always roughly how much you pay for taxi fare from point A - Point B. IF you happen to be paying more than ususal, take down the Taxi Number. It is located on a sticker on the front wind screen top right hand corner. Call and complain. if the driver receives 3 complains, he loses his license.
