Ministry: Three employees in Malaysia die each day due to work-related accidents

Ministry: Three employees die each day due to work-related accidents KUALA LUMPUR: Three employees die each day due to work-related accidents. Of these three deaths, two of them involve commuting to and from work, while the other cause of death involved accidents at the work place. Statistics from the Human Resources Ministry revealed that commuting-related accidents were the main cause of death and injuries for employees in Malaysia. Data shows that while commuting accidents have been increasing through the years, industrial accidents which occur specifically at the workplace have been declining. Human Resources Deputy Minister Datuk Ismail Mutallib said most of the commuting accidents involved motorcyclists, and were caused by careless behaviour on the road. "For commuting accidents, only 18,387 accidents were recorded in 2002 but in 2012, the number rose to 26,256,” he said. The ministry’s data has revealed there were 594 deaths of Malaysian employees so far this year, with 27,000 permanent disabilities and 32,000 temporary disabilities recorded. Ismail said even though statistics this year point towards a rising number of industrial accidents than commuting accidents, previous data collected since 2002 proved that industrial accidents have reduced from 63,423 in 2002 to 35,296 in 2012. “Between January and July this year, there have been 37, 704 accidents involving employees, of which 16,440 of them were commuting accidents while another 21,264 involved industrial accidents, “ he said when speaking at the 2013 Accident Prevention Seminar here yesterday, He said the trend was worrying as the government did not want to lose human capital due to accidents. “At the same time, when the rate of accidents increases, the amount of compensation paid every year by the government also increases and it is not a healthy trend.” He said industrial accidents involving employees would cost the government, as the Social Security Organisation (Socso) needed to pay compensation. He said the total amount of compensation has been on the rise. In 2002, the amount of compensation paid was only RM700 million. Ismail added that Socso paid out RM2 billion worth of compensation to workers due to work-related accidents in 2012. This is an increase from the previous year, where Socso paid RM1.7 billion. In 2010 Socso paid out RM1.6 billion worth of compensation. He said Socso had also identified the top 100 companies where work-related accidents occur the most, and had been consistently engaging with their management and employees.
