SINGAPORE - 61 foreign nationals were arrested in the forested areas along Punggol during an operation conducted by Police on Feb 28, 2014 that commenced at 10.10pm.

The suspects are believed to have used the cover of the forest for various illicit activities such as vice and gambling.

Based on information received, officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Criminal Investigation Department and Gurkha Contingent, raided the forested areas along Punggol Road.

The 61 men and women were arrested for wilful trespass on state land or offences under the Women's Charter.

The offence of Wilful Trespass carries punishment of a fine of up to $1,000.

Investigations are currently ongoing.

Commander of Ang Mo Kio Police Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police Keok Tong San, praised the officers involved for a well-coordinated and successful operation.

He said, "We will not tolerate any form of criminal activity. Persons who think they can get away with their illicit activities by operating under the cover of forested areas are sadly mistaken. The Police will come down hard on such activities and weed them out wherever they may be."
