According to the latest report by the United Nations Population Division, Singapore has about 381,000 immigrants from China living here as of mid 2013.
This makes Singapore the 6th most popular destination for PRC immigrants in the world.

Top of the list in terms of the number of PRC immigrants, was the US with 2.2 million PRC immigrants.

Next was South Korea (657,000), Japan (650,000), Canada (640,000) and Australia (447,000).

Despite Singapore's small size and total population, we were the country with the 6th most number of Chinese immigrants in 2013.

For countries such as the US, where total population is about 314 million, even though 2.2 million PRC immigrants may seem like a large number, the percentage of the population is only 0.7%.

In comparison, the PRC immigrant population in Singapore is about 7%.

The report classified immigrants as those who were born overseas and then moved to Singapore within their lifetime.

Even nearby South Korea, which had the second largest number of PRC immigrants only had 1.3% of their population as Chinese immigrants.

When such a small country such as Singapore holds over 380,000 immigrants from China, it is no wonder that locals feel crowded out and overtaken in their own country.

Do you think the government has let in too many foreigners?
