GOVT RESPONDS TO ARTICLE ABOUT ESCALATOR COLLAPSE, SAYS THEY MAY REGULATE MAINTENANCE .node-article .field-name-ad-box-in-article {float: left;margin: 15px 15px 10px 0;}.node-article .field-tags{clear: both;} Post date: 4 Aug 2014 - 2:45pm Background Story: Escalator leading to Children's Education centre gives way making dangerous gap Responding to media queries, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) explained today that there are currently no formal regulations regarding escalator maintenance. This follows yesterday's incident where part of an escalator leading up to a children's education centre in The Forum Mall on Orchard collapsed, creating a large gap that a foot could easily have slid into. Fortunately, no one was hurt but the hazard was serious considering that the escalator was mainly for customers of the Julia Gabriel Centre which caters to children aged 6 months to 12 years old. The BCA explained that while there aren't regulations currently, they are also reviewing the process and considering whether they should implement regulations on escalator maintenance. If they do go ahead, they may also fine companies that do not comply with the standards. Currently, the only rules governing escalators is a general standards rule CP15, which states a code of practice for the installation and operation of escalators and other passenger conveyors. These code of practices lay out that escalators must be maintained once a month and get tested once a year. The building owners are the ones in charge of the maintenance of escalators but as these rules are only codes of practice, they are not effectively enforced and do not carry penalties.
