One become a faster target (less scanning by the touts) when he is with a tourist map, takes out his camera/iphone/handphone and started snapping pics, or looking around looking impress/surprise (facial) etc. They approaches single and double men, but never couples (man and lady together) or man with kids and/or older people (such does not includes targets for fake imitations whom belongs to another group).
Note: not only restricted to the above how one can become a target!

you mean nanjing walk(南京步行街) right? that one i dunno why so many of us go there. in shanghai, those ppl there are normally 乡下人, aka those who come from other provinces one. nanjing lu is a different area, where it's quite good for shopping.
the other thing is, dont even talk to these ppl. they might approach you, but you just walk on, don't even bother about them (of course, during the process, watch your personal belongings. not all are black shop ppl, some are short skirt, stockinged pickpockets).
