I ate this fish soup before. Very nice but long queue during lunch.

Angel Horse Teo Chew Fish Soup 仙马潮州鱼汤

Sliced Fish Soup ($5). This bowl of sliced fish soup can be found at Albert Centre Market and Food Centre. It comes in $3, $4 and $5, depending on how hungry you are. There’s the usual bitter gourd and tofu in the mix. I like the addition of seaweed here, gives it more texture.

As opposed to the usual soya sauce, they serve the Teo Chew salted bean sauce with chilli padi instead, which complements the sliced fish very well, giving a contrast in flavours. Sliced fish and broth is flavourful while the salted bean sauce lends a little sour and spicy flavour.

Sliced Fish Soup ($4 each). Well-known and given recommendations by various organisations, Jin Hua. nestled in Maxwell Food Centre, serves up a very generous portion of sliced fish soup and definitely embodied what it means to be value for money. I ordered a clear broth and another milky one to decide for myself which I like better.

My conclusion is the former. The clear broth version is sweeter when it comes to tasting the soup and the essence of the fish remains in it. The milkier one is more indulgent and creamier but less sweet than the former. Depending on what flavour you are going for, both broths makes for a yummy meal. Though the slices of fish were slightly bland, it certainly complements the broth.

Cheap & Good Thai Restaurants in Singapore Under $20 Per Pax

http://sethlui.com/affordable-thai-r...nts-singapore/

Aroy Dee

This has a slightly more modern interior than most, the tiled floors and semi open kitchen are inviting and I loved being able to see the kitchen in action. The set lunch and Thai Bento sets here are particularly good value at $6.50, whilst for dinner there are plenty of options to choose from including the usual favourites. In particular I’m a fan of their green curry.

This place is open all night, making it a great place to stop for dinner on the way home after a few – OK, perhaps more than just a few – drinks. A new outlet will soon be opening in Boat Quay for those of you who rarely find yourself near the current location.

Aroy Dee: 262 Middle Road, Sunshine Plaza, Singapore 188989 | Tel: 6336 8812 | Website

Opening Hours: Monday – Friday 11.30am – 3.00pm & 5.00pm – 6.00am / Saturday – Sunday 12.00pm to 6.00am

Nana Thai

Nana Thai is yet another gem within Golden Mile. Always reassuringly busy, this is a great spot for a quick lunch or more leisurely dinner. Whilst the decor is simple and basic, for authentic and tasty Thai food at a very reasonable price you can’t go wrong with Nana Thai.

I watched the chef from our table as she prepared my mango salad, and it didn’t disappoint when it reached the table. The balance of sweet and spicy was dead on for me, I could eat this all day. We also enjoyed a huge bowl of Tom Kha Gai that was served in a silver bowl atop a gas flame. It was packed with a generous serving of chicken and mushrooms, easily enough for 2-3 people and justifying the $12 price tag. Empty plates all round guaranteed.

Nana Thai: #01-51/52/66C, Golden Mile Complex, 5001 Beach Road, 199588 | Tel: 6297 8498

Opening Hours: 11.00am – 10.00pm daily

Ah Loy Thai

Ah Loy Thai is a family run business located within the Shaw Towers. It’s a fairly casual set up attracting a range of clientele from students to the suited and booted on their lunch breaks. It’s often busy, particularly at lunch time, so be prepared to queue for a table followed by a further wait for your food to arrive. I prefer to visit early evening when I’m not in so much of a rush.

Famed for it’s pandan chicken and butter calamari, this place is cheap, cheerful and worth a try if you are in the neighbourhood.
