Move to reduce crimes in Johor shows results
Report from The New Straits Times dated Wednesday 24 October 2007 :-
Move to reduce crimes in Johor shows results CONCERTED efforts by the police to tackle crimes had seen crime rates in Johor decreasing by 7.3 per cent in the first seven months of this year compared with the same period last year. Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Fu Ah Kiow said there were 15,646 criminal cases registered between January and July compared with 16,882 cases last year. "In Johor Baru, the crime index has decreased by 11.9 per cent," he told opposition leader Lim Kit Siang. Lim contended that the people of Johor still fell unsafe despite the improving statistics. "Whenever people crossed over to Singapore, they feel safe but when they return, the fear due to crime resurfaced," said the DAP Ipoh Timur member. Fu acknowledged there was still fear among Johor Baru residents over crime cases. "That's why it is important to let the public know that the police are doing their best and the hard work has paid off as evident from the statistics." Police, he said, had set up six new district police headquarters in the state. Three are in Johor Baru and one each in Batu Pahat, Muar and Segamat. "Two of the IPDs in Johor Bahru have started operations from rented buildings," he said, adding that another 21 new police stations would be built in the state. He told Wong Nai Chee (BN-Kota Melaka) that since August, the state police had recruited 400 officers and added 200 patrol cars. --- KatoeyNewsNetwork |

Driver killed in carjacking
Police officers combing for clues at the scene of the robbery yesterday. GOMBAK: A limousine driver was bludgeoned to death by a gang of robbers who tried to hijack his company's Mercedes Benz E-Class at a petrol station here, early yesterday. Low Teck Chai In the incident about 5.45am at the Shell petrol station in KM6.4 of Jalan Gombak, Low Teck Chai, 46, was refuelling the car when he was hit on the head with a blunt object, believed to be a piece of wood. City CID chief SAC II Ku Chin Wah said Low was on his way to work in Jalan Pinang when four men in a black Proton Perdana stopped beside him at the station. "Three of the men alighted from the car and one of them started attacking Low. The victim collapsed with head injuries. "The suspect then tried to drive away in the limousine with his three accomplices trailing in the Proton Perdana," Ku said. But some 30 metres away, the car's security immobiliser system kicked in, causing the vehicle to stall. The doors were also automatically locked. The enraged robber then broke the driver's side window, crawled out and went for Low. He dragged the semi-conscious victim to the back seat of the Mercedes Benz and asked him how to disengage the system. Low was then beaten to death. He died in the car causing the robber to jump into the waiting Proton Perdana. It is learnt that the terrified cashier manning the station hid inside the storeroom when the incident unfolded and later called the police. Low's body was later taken to Hospital Kuala Lumpur for a post-mortem. Ku said the case has been classified as murder and police have lifted several sets of fingerprints from the limousine. Police are also expected to view footages obtained from the closed-circuit television cameras at the petrol station. The father of three from Gombak was working for Stoneway Trevel & Tours Sdn Bhd. Company operations manager, YK Siow said Low was a long-serving and hardworking employee. "He had been with us for more than 10 years and had always been a friendly and hardworking driver. "We are all shocked and deeply saddened by what has happened," he said. Siow added that this was the first time the company, which has about 200 drivers, had experienced such an incident.

Re: Please be careful - Daylight Robbery
What the police had claimed that the JB crime rate had gone down by 7.3 % YOY, is an illusion
It did not disclose the success rate!! Perhaps the down-turn was due to other factors, like: fewer Singaporeans visiting JB [main target group]; lesser ladies strolling along the streets; Fewer people are carrying much money that attract ciminal activities; Many of those can not cari makan in JB and had moved to nearby areas like Kluang, BP and even Muar. It is just like our beloved city hall claiming that their flood mitigation programs are working well, when the total rainfall over the whole year had fallen by 60 %, so not much rain to test the flood mitigation set-up's cannot constitute a success! I used to take note of our beloved mata-mata [now some DSP's are in hot waters] patrolling along KL and JB streets. They close one eye to the most blatant abuse of the law: Many motorcyclists have not helmets on, headlights not switched on, carrying 2 ~3 children on a bike, jumping traffic lights....if these openly law-flouting motorcyclists, they can't catch or rather they don't want to catch, what about those innocent-looking snatch thieves who only expose themselves as criminals when the crimes are committed. Are the police that smart to per-determine who are the criminals? There is a hypothesis: If a police were to detect a car and a motorcyclist jumping the traffic lights, which will the police catch?? the motorist or the motorcyclist?? If the police could use thier intelligience [if any] to nab criminals as much the same level they use their intellegience in corrupt practices, Malaysia would be a better place to live in. Mere lip-service and campaigns will not get any results. By just wearing a badge "ANTI RASUAH" does not address the problem...maybe they wear a better sounding badge "NANTI RASUAH"

Statistics can always be manipulated to show what you want people to see. The polis in Malaysia as such a tarnished reputation, who believe them must be naive.
