Re: Disgraceful S'porean
Dear All,
I travelled extensively to China, and I have seen some situations that many brotheres have mentioned in this posting. However, I must say that, fortunately, the frequency of such happenings is relatively low now. Nevertheless, one or two incidents would be enough to tarnish the reputation of Singaporeans, amongst whom I am one. I would like to recount an incident in a fligth to Chengdu on an Airbus A320. A two row, 3 seat a side is the seat arrangement. There were two quite Chinese ladies sitting at the last row, one of them was quite attractive. They were crowded around by a group of, sigh... male Singaporeans (they were wearing black colour T-shirt with company logo printed on it). On my trip to the toilet, and while waiting for my turn, the men were asking for all kind of questions, with one objective, making advances to the two ladies, like, "would you like to be my company during my stay?" "Give me your phone number, and we can have fun together", etc. The conversation (rather one sided, as the ladies were not even looking at them) was sprinkled with a number of dirty jokes. I could see that the two ladies were irritated by this group of men. As there were 5 to 6 men, the talking got very noisy and the atmosphere at that part of the plane was very unpleasant that caused many passengers turned their head and looked at them. While waiting for my luggage, the two ladies were standing not far from me, and they were again surrounded by the the same group of men. At the end, one of the girls shouted "Why you Singaporeans are so "se"?" ("se" means colour in Mandarin). At that moment, I wished that my luggage has come out so that I could leave the place as fast as I could. This could be an isolated incident, but it was enough to irritate me and others. My 2 cent worth

Re: Disgraceful S'porean
I think these isolated incidents are happening quite frequently as more sporeans get to travel out. But I've to say its not isolated to sporeans only. I've seen Indons, PRCs, Indians, koreans and even HKers and ROCs behaving badly. Infact sad to say, mostly asians. Haizz.

However, the HP being on doesn't compromise air safety at all. It's just some stupid rule (it's a good stupid rule though - I hate it when poeple talk in enclosed spaces like restaurants). If it was truly safety related, mobiles would be banned from airplane cabins outright. At any given time, I'd bet there are more than a couple mobiles turned on (purposely or inadvertently) in carry-ons all over the world. So the point here is the sanctity of the rule. Personally I don't care if someone is using a mobile on a plane - just be quiet and respect the space of people around you. |

Re: Disgraceful S'porean
I agree that this kind of behaviour is not prevalent to any specific race or ethnic groups. Rather, it is the individual's psyche, and most often in this instances, compounded by "herd behaviour", that are the causes of these displays of social depravity.
Most recently, I was on board a plane bound for Timor, with a mainly Portuguese speaking group of travellers. Most of the took the front half of the plane, which was excellent, as they were loud, and uncouth. Most of them (especially a certain few) were behaving like the whole freaking plane belonged to them, talking loudly, and moving all over the place ( was a pretty small plane). there were quite a few other asians, namely some Chinese workers, and couple of indonesians, towards the end of the plane, who were just hoping with catching up with some sleep. Well, not content with just making noise in the front, a few of these angmohs (and a few blacks), had to come towards the rear of the plane, where the aisle seats were empty, and continue talking loudly with the occasional loud guffaws. ccb. and i was trying to sleep! fucking pricks. Main incident, pilot made an announcement over the intercom, but the ppl up infront were too engrossed in their ribaldry to listen. At that instance, a sweet looking (as do most indonesian air stewardess) passed by, and was asked in a gesture what the message was about. She gave a smile, and held up both her hands to mimic the spraying of aerosol cans (as most of those who travel to australia would know, is required throughout the length of the plane). She continued and left the cabin area. The fucking pricks (as I'ld now call them) started to make imbecilic remarks and jokes about the gesture (which, granted, looks like a "ma-ti" sign), and one blonde woman went as far as to stand up, showed the 3 universal fuck-you sign (third finger, slap right palm against left fist on the thumb and fore-finger, and right hand going under left arm) totally disgraceful.

If not why there is a phone, payable by credit card, on every seat. It cost USD8.00/minute to make calls from that set. So, do you mean that those phone does not emits frequency that would disturb the aricraft?!??!?!??

from vodafone: Aircraft contain a vast array of complex electronic equipment and communications systems. Using a cellular phone in an aircraft could cause interference to these systems because they were not designed to tolerate such interference. Similar comments apply to the use of personal computers, portable stereos and other personal electronic equipment in aircraft. It should be noted that the credit-card mobile phones now provided on some aircraft do not interfere with aircraft systems because they are wired to a special type of base station that has been designed to safely receive and transmit radio signals to and from the aircraft.

hi, I weould tend to disagree with you... as you may well have noticed, when you switch on your mobile phone if you are near any radio or speaker, you can hear this noise... This is the interference we are talking about..... Many of the high-tech landing and navigation system on the plane will be disrupted by these signals... The phones on board the aircraft have special frequency (not the usual 900 Mhz that the GSM phone uses) that do not disrupt with the equipment on board.... This is the same reason why mobile phones are not allowed into the Intensive Care Unit in many hospitals because they may interfere with the medical equipment in use. I really do not understand the mentality of passengers who cannot wait five minutes until the plane has come to a complete stop or until they are inside the terminal... I have had times scolded these people by asking thewm if they are illiterate and cannot understand the instructions or whether they are just plain stupid and refuse to listen to instructions. |

Re: Disgraceful S'porean
In fact I believe every countries have someone which act disgraceful to represent their country. even rich countries people is the same. but I am surprise when doing so , some singaporean just could not stop telling people `I am a singaporean!' and show people `I am more superior from you so I can do what I want to' face, some singaporean is really like to do so during oversea. I believe these people don't really know how big is the world. There are not such things `superior' in human, not even mention between countries. Sometime, some `Politician' will say `singaporean be proud of yourself', please don't get it wrong, just to be proud to yourself but don't be proud to others.
