Hi pal, that wasn't the right way to compare....should compare apple with apple and orange with orange. Our Singapore average earning is about S$2k. And our petrol cost is around S$1.98 Our friend in Malaysia, their average earning is also around RM$2k. (assume only, should be lesser than RM$2k) And their petrol is RM$1.92 So, it's work out that our standard of living is about the same. Except Spore smaller country among the two is run by a more "efficient" government and also of the advantages in exchange rate. So to us, their stuffs are cheap but to the local, it's not. |

Re: Please be careful - Daylight Robbery
Quote:
BTW, many gets confused with "costs of living" and "standard of living". Some boring details: "cost of living, amount of money needed to buy the goods and services necessary to maintain a specified standard of living. The cost of living is closely tied to rates of inflation and deflation. In estimating such costs, food, clothing, rent, fuel, lighting, and furnishings as well as expenses for communication, education, recreation, transportation, and medical services are generally included" "standard of living, level of consumption that an individual, group, or nation has achieved. The evaluation of a standard of living is relative, depending upon the judgment of the observer as to what constitutes a high or a low scale. A relative index to the standard of living of a certain economic group can be gathered from a comparison of the cost of living and the wage scale or personal income. Factors such as discretionary income are important, but standard of living includes not only the material articles of consumption but also the number of dependents in a family, the environment, the educational opportunities, and the amount spent for health, recreation, and social services. Unemployment, low wages, crowded living conditions, and physical calamities, such as drought, flood, or war, may bring a drop in the standard of living, and, conversely, an increase in social benefits and higher wages may bring about a rise. While standard of living may vary greatly among various groups within a country, it also varies from nation to nation, and international comparisons are sometimes made by analyzing gross national products, per capita incomes, or any number of other indicators from life expectancy to clean water. Overall, industrialized nations tend to have a higher standard of living than developing countries. In the United States, as in most Western nations, the standard of living has shown a steady trend upward." So, even if MY and SG were to achieve an equal "costs of living", SG still beats MY in standard of living. Whereas, one may spend more to live in a super-inflationary country such as Mexico, yet the standard of living is comparatively lower.

Re: Please be careful - Daylight Robbery
I have asked myself:
Why do the minority races in Malaysia continue to live and stay in a country that discriminates against them, treats them as second class citizens, is not efficiently run, has a relatively higher crime-rate, provides jobs that do not pay as well, etc.? The list goes on and on and on and on... Answer: They love being discriminated against? They love their country? Everything and everyone they have is in Malaysia? The fear of starting afresh somewhere else? IMO, everyone should read "Who Took My Cheese" and try to live somewhere where they are appreciated. Singapore is just a few hours away.

Who not immigrate to S'pore ????
Quote:
Well, there are few reasons why this is not possible :- 1. S'pore WILL NEVER accept ALL the non-Malays who want to immigrate to S'pore because S'pore will then be "flooded" with too many people it doesn't want to be its citizens 2. S'pore will hand-pick who are eligible to be its citizens based on the educational qualifications and skills Anyway, S'pore is having the best of both worlds ...... there are at least 100,000+ Malaysians working in S'pore but staying in JB ...... and these Malaysians keep the S'pore economy growing ....... imagine what will happen if overnight all these 100,000+ Malaysians were to stop working in S'pore ..... the S'pore Govt will not be able to find enough S'poreans to fill up all these 100,000+ jobs and the economy will really suffer ! |

There are more than 100,000 Malaysians in Spore. Guess you Miss out the PRs too. Most of the Prs are holding white collar jobs here. Well I would like to stress that without Spore JB will be much economy worst off. Take a conservative salary of each workers at $1000 , 100k workers will contribute 10 million SGD per month Which is 120 million SGD per year. Most of the workers are much well off than working in JB, I see most them buying brand new cars and house. So where does the money comes from??From Malaysia? The answer is no. |

Why not immigrate to S'pore ????
Actually both the S'pore Govt/economy and the 100,000+ Malaysians who are employed in S'pore benefit from the arrangement......
The only "losers" are the normal people of JB who are not employed in S'pore or are not shop-owners/hawkers because these S'poreans help to "push up" the prices of goods/services in JB/Johor |
