Now 2nd hand car depreciation and value is same as a brand new car. Just that you dun need to fork out more cash for DP. A honda stream left with 3 yrs cost $50k now where the COE is only $20k

initially, i have the same thinking.. same amount of depreciation, might as well get a brand new car with warranty and so on... plan is drive for 10 years anyway..

on the other hand, if i buy a new car, i will locking in the depreciation with the high COE for 10 years, whereas if i buy a 2nd hand car, same depreciation but for maybe 3years.. the difference is that i'm "betting" COE will drop in the next few years and i will be able to get a new car at a lower price..

anyway, still thinking as i'm not too sure if the above scenario/calculation is correct..

Correct. COE supply will peak between mid 2016 and mid 2017. Do your research. Those who bought in 2006 and 2007 paid $15k average for COE. These are the ones who now need to bid again in 2016-2017. How many can keep up with $60 - 70k will decide how it is priced then.

The other point is I seriously doubt PAP dares hold an election when COE stays at $70k. They need to, by Jan 2017. Not unless they calculated they brought in enough new citizens to swing the vote.
