Re: Chelsea FC - Supporters' Rally

MOURINHO: WE PLAY FOR TITLES

It will be a historic achievement if we can eclipse Liverpool's 63-game home unbeaten league record on Sunday, according to manager José Mourinho.

In spite of this, the manager believes the focus must be on gaining a maximum points start to the season, rather than concentrating on merely avoiding defeat.

'If we draw I think we shouldn't celebrate. In spite of the draw giving us a historic record, I think we shouldn't celebrate because we don't play for records we play for titles. I know one point against Birmingham is better than zero, but our target is not to beat the record, it is to win the game.

'But, if we win or if we draw, I think it's a historic record yes. I can't tell you name by name Liverpool players, but for sure we are speaking about Dalglish, Hansen, Phil Neal, all of these fantastic players they had in that generation.

'If we can beat the record then yes, respect to every Chelsea player that participated in this number of games.'

Our preparations for tomorrow's game have been hit by injuries to key players such as captain John Terry, but Mourinho, who confirmed that Petr Cech has recovered from his Wembley injury, is grateful that we do not have a situation like last season on our hands.

'Last season when we lost John we had no other central defender solutions. In this moment we have Ben-Haim and Ricardo both fit to play, and in case I have an extra need I still have Essien,' the manager explained.

'I have a lot of midfield players ready to play so if I have to play Essien I have mikel, Lampard, Diarra, Sidwell. We are a bit more protected for that.'

Despite the injuries, he is still keen for the team to play in a positive manner, abandoning lat season's 'survival football' where appropriate, using last weekend's Community Shield as an example.

'I think it's easy to see in the last game the way we controlled the game, not because we defended but because we had the ball, passed the ball and used the ball. We didn't play with a big striker putting long balls to try to bring the game, we played with good quality and that's the line we want to follow, but as you say if you have every player it's better for the team.'

The manager has played down suggestions that even fully fit, the squad is the strongest it has been in his time at Chelsea, saying:

'No I cannot say that. I can't and I don't. If I go to my crazy philosophy, I always say my best players are the best in the world, and my squad is the best in the world. If I forget that way of thinking and feeling, I have to say that it's a good squad, but there's a lot of good squads in the Premiership and in other countries that will fight for the Champions League. I don't say somebody is better than us, but I don't say too that we are better than somebody.'

Just like the record that could fall on Sunday, Mourinho sees capturing the Premier League as an accomplishment worth shouting about.

'I think winning the Premiership is always a big achievement, its one of the best leagues in the world,' he said.

'Forgive me Spanish and Italians, for me it's the best. Maybe one day if I'm there I tell the opposite but I feel in this moment the premiership is the best in the world, improving year after year.

'Every team invests, is better, I think it's the best league and it's a big achievement to win, like it's a big achievement for the teams from the bottom to survive and not be relegated. For people to achieve objectives in the premiership is very difficult.'

Brazilian Alex is a damn good header of the ball. Another powerful player in the mould of Essien.

Frank Lampard has never been the same after he fractured his wrist late last season. John Terry too hasn't been like what he was in the first season during which he scored many crucial goals. Actually, Chelski can do without these two jokers.

I am a bit worried for Chelski with the news that Tevez's deal is sealed. Man U certainly has more firepower this year - Rooney, Tevez, Ronaldo, Anderson, Nani....wow !!!
robben leave or stay no a big prob. is the club we devoted to, not players. players come and go.
lampard and terry not jokers. terry has the commanding presence and he can push the team.
look at real madrid where they have the top players at one/two seasons ago.

Bro no_faith, here my opinion. Let us look @ Frank's contribution; especially during his time @ Chelsea, it's phenomenal. He's been improving his game season after season after season.

Frank has scored 90 goals for Chelsea (as of 13 May 2007), making him the top goalscorer currently at the club, and 10th highest in total. He is also the highest-scoring midfielder in Chelsea's history, having passed Dennis Wise's record of 76 goals on 17 December 2006.

He is regularly accused by rival fans of scoring goals from deflections. However, a report from The Guardian newspaper shows that only six of his goals (6,7%) for Chelsea have been scored in that way.

Let us not forget Frank is the holder of the Premiership record of playing consecutive league matches dating back to October 13, 2001, set on November 26, 2005, breaking the previous record of 159 appearances by David James. The streak was broken on December 28, 2005, after 164 games, when Lampard was taken ill before Chelsea's game at Manchester City.

Frank's a goal scoring machine.

So IMHO, I don't think it's time Frank to move on, this is only the beginning. It's a bullish start for Frank; that means he's yet to hit his peak. Frank can only get better. A definite terror to the rival teams defence. I'm glad he's with the Blues.

Comment

The new Premier League season kicked off with a record for Chelsea as we made it 64 consecutive undefeated league games at the Bridge.

As always with a new campaign, there is renewed hope that it can be a special year, and José Mourinho's side have given every indication this could be the case.

Despite the narrow margin of victory, we were in control of the game for long spells, with forwards Pizarro and Kalou linking up as if they had been team mates for years rather than minutes.

The number of goalscoring opportunities we created will be encouraging for fans, after criticism in pre-season that we had not scored enough goals.

Our visitors created little, particularly in the second half, but will take heart at their battling performance.

Finally, it was pleasing to see Mikael Forssell on his return, and he gave home fans a scare after opening the scoring. We hope he can have an injury-free season and show the League what he can do.

Today though was all about Chelsea, a new record and Essien's winning strike was worthy of winning any game.

Re: Chelsea FC - Supporters' Rally

MATCH REPORT: CHELSEA 3 BIRMINGHAM CITY 2

Chelsea are the proud owners of new English top flight record.

The 2007/8 model continued where the version from the previous season left off, not to mention the teams of the two years before that, by proving unbeatable in the league at home.

It took some fluid and invigorating attacking play to reach the milestone of 64 games not out as newly-promoted Birmingham looked well equipped for the season ahead.

However, pleasing home debuts from Claudio Pizarro and Florent Malouda were marked by goals and with the game tied at 2-2 at half-time, a Michael Essien belter shortly after the break was enough for an opening day three points.

The squad fitness picture had improved since the Community Shield to the extent that two strikers could be fielded. Pizarro was ready to start a game and Kalou was back. Drogba was also on the bench.

The formation was 4-4-2 with wingers - Wright-Phillips and Malouda in the starting line-up. Johnson had won the selection contest for the right-back shirt and played his first game at the Bridge since his loan at Portsmouth. Essien and Lampard were asked to patrol the central midfield.

For Birmingham, Mikael Forssell was playing his first game at the Bridge since leaving in 2005 and Friday's loan arrival from Arsenal, Johan Djourou, went straight into central defence.

It was Forssell with the first shot on target of the game, a medium power strike that squirmed briefly from Cech's grasp before it was safely pouched. That was after just four minutes.

Three minutes later, Malouda was only a foot away from rippling the Shed End net, striking Kalou's ball inside first time but just clearing the crossbar. A lovely 50 yard pass by Wright-Phillips had opened space for the move.

Pizarro headed a Wright-Phillips cross on target on 12 minutes but the looping effort never looked likely to beat Doyle. With the next move, supplier turned shooter as Wright-Phillips blasted across goal and narrowly wide. The bright Blues were involving the wide men well.

But then Birmingham won a free-kick midway inside the Chelsea half. McSheffrey floated it in high, Ridgewell flicked it on and Forssell was free to nod past a helpless Cech. In Hasselbaink-style, the Chelsea old boy made no significant celebration of his Matthew Harding End goal.

It took Chelsea just three minutes and one attack to equalise. Malouda had drifted over to the right and touched a pass on to fellow winger Wright-Phillips. The cross came in low and Pizarro released the trigger. Doyle on his line got a good hand to the low shot but still let it in. Our new Peruvian was off the mark.

If the 17th minute equaliser was all about penetration down the wings, Chelsea's second on 30 minutes was driven straight through the heart of Steve Bruce's side.

Malouda began the incision, passing forward to Lampard who found Kalou. Standing strong, the Ivorian picked out Malouda's continuing run and the summer signing finished confidently. It was a goal of pass-and-move excellence that Mourinho on the touchline appeared to enjoy especially.

Looking dangerous with every move forward, the Blues broke next through Kalou out wide, Lampard scooping the cross goalwards but Djourou was in the right place to divert the ball behind.

A Chelsea third was looking well on the cards but then on 35 minutes, Birmingham bludgeoned an equaliser. Kapo out on the right beat Johnson in the tackle and unleashed an absolutely stinging shot into the far side of Cech's net. This was certainly a lively opening to the league season, even if it wasn't going totally to plan!

That second goal looked to have knocked Chelsea back on our heels but the impressive Kalou brought down a high ball shortly before the break, turned and fired a shot straight into the arms of Doyle.

Shortly after the restart, Wright-Phillips blasted just past the post after Pizarro had performed target man duties well. Just a minute later, Essien had no such difficulty locating the target, smacking in a 25-yarder after a lay-back from Wright-Phillips.

As with the first goal, Doyle's contact looked sufficient for a Premier League goalkeeper to save, but yet again, the ball found its way past.

Essien was booked for celebrating his first of the season with the Matthew Harding Lower. He took his punishment without complaint.

The same player steamrollered Nafti in midfield soon after but this time blasted over from long range.

Drogba was introduced on 63 minutes as a straight swap for Pizarro who can be well-satisfied with his Stamford Bridge start. Mikel came on five minutes later for Essien who hadn't been happy since taking a knock in a challenge a few minutes earlier.

After a Johnson ball forward, this time the Birmingham keeper gave a good account of himself when he saved a Kalou shot.

Soon Malouda and Wright-Phillips nearly combined to find Kalou at the far post on 74 minutes. This Chelsea team had plenty of attacking ideas.

Larsson became Birmingham's first booking when hauling back Malouda who had left him for dead. Carvalho followed into the book for hauling down Forssell.

With the game entering the final 10 minutes, Chelsea were asked to show some defensive resilience, scrabbling one loose ball behind followed by Ben-Haim making an important block.

When Doyle's mixed afternoon saw him rush from goal to clear danger and hack upfield in the direction of Drogba, the man with the Golden Boot fired at an empty net from just over the halfway line - the ball flying close enough to get a few bums off seats.

With three minutes to go, the same player found Sidwell whose shot on the turn was just a yard wide. The Chelsea fans, who had been in good voice throughout, were asked to hold their breath for a few moments more before the win was safe.

When the final whistle came, it was met with a mighty cheer as one mention of Liverpool's name was erased from the record books.

Chelsea (4-4-2): Cech, Johnson, Ben-Haim, Carvalho, A Cole; Wright-Phillips, Essien (Mikel 69), Lampard, Malouda (Sidwell 82); Kalou, Pizarro (Drogba 63).

Goals Pizarro 14, Malouda 30, Essien 49.

Booked Essien 50, Carvalho 78.

Birmingham (4-4-1-1): Doyle, Kelly, Djourou, Ridgewell, Queudrue (Parnaby 50); Larsson, Muamaba, Nafti (De Ridder 74), McSheffrey (Jerome 68); Kapo; Forssell.

Goals Forssell 14, Kapo 30.

Booked Larsson 76

Re: Chelsea FC - Supporters' Rally

REACTION: INCREDIBLE FOOTBALL

José Mourinho has expressed his pleasure at how the team performed against Birmingham, playing a style of free-flowing football that excited fans and pundits alike.

Mourinho, who oversaw his side's 64th undefeated home league fixture in a row, was disappointed to leak two goals, but delighted with the breathtaking football on show.

'The wingers produced incredible football, and the strikers played with great dynamic,' said the manager.

'I always thought we could score goals, not the kind of game where you feel it's difficult to create or score. We create and we score. Of course we concede two goals and I don't like to concede two goals, but that's part of the game and also the consequence of Birmingham because they played a really good game, but we have three points, the quality of our game and the quality of our goals.'

There was joy too as we overtook Liverpool's 26-year record, and Mourinho believes we owe much to players who are no longer with us.

'I think it's a good way to celebrate our home record in a day where I have to go home and sit and remember every player that helped us to achieve this record because some of them are not here with us and I want to remember all of them, Gudjohnsen, Geremi, Duff, all these guys that had a good participation in this fantastic record.

'I think the record means for Chelsea more than for me. Everybody knows that the previous record belonged to Liverpool, to top players, Dalglish, Hansen, Phil Neal and all these great Liverpool players and in this moment belongs to Chelsea, to Lampard, to Terry, to Gudjohnsen, to all of these guys.

'In this moment Chelsea has written its names in the history books, it's a great record.'

Unbeaten here since his arrival, Mourinho considers that Stamford Bridge must remain a fortress, and while nobody is unbeatable, we should continue to make it a difficult place for opponents to visit.

'I think it has to be intimidating even when we lose a game. Nobody is unbeatable, one day somebody comes here and wins,' he said.

'The important thing is when we lose a game we don't lose the next one, the record is there, it will be I don't know, 69, 79, 89, I don't know. When somebody comes here and beats us the message is again to go again for a good run of matches at home. In this moment everybody knows Chelsea is a strong team playing at home.'

Mourinho was full of praise too for Shaun Wright-Phillips, who has been in blistering form since joining up with the squad for pre-season.

'I think he's playing very well, last season he had an improvement. This pre-season he started very, very well, strong since day one, and the players they know that I try always to be honest and to choose the players that deserve more. Shaun had a very good pre-season and today played a very good game.

'I think I am speaking too much about an individual player, we won, Chelsea won, but im pleased for Shaun. He deserves it, the boy always believed in himself, the dressing room loves him because he was always a team player, he was always the same boy, the same person. I am very happy he had this very good performance.'

Wright-Phillips is likely to keep his place for forthcoming away dates with Reading and Liverpool, as the manager has stressed he is not too keen to be rotating his side at this stage of the season.

'This is a moment where the players need to play and im not going to make a complete rotation like I would do if we are in February or March with Champions League matches around the corner. That's not the situation; they have two more matches to play during the week,' he said, though he did reveal that there are still injury worries in the squad, with match winner Michael Essien limping off today.

His problem, according to Mourinho was 'something in the knee ligament, he was limping, he was in pain. I had two midfielders on the bench, Mikel and Sidwell so I made the change immediately. If you ask me is he ready for Wednesday I don't know.'

Opposition manager Steve Bruce was pleased to be back in the big time, and was impressed with how we shaped up.

When asked if we were different from last season, he joked: 'I didn't see them last season, I wasn't around. They looked alright to me!

Bruce was also in awe of the record we have managed to achieve, calling it 'staggering' and 'an unbelievable achievement for [Mourinho] personally and the team'.

Our former striker Mikael Forssell reminded us what he can do inside the opening quarter of an hour, and Bruce was delighted to have him back leading the Birmingham line.

'It's like signing a new player. He's been dogged for two years. For him to come back in the condition he's in we just hope he stays fit and healthy. For a club like Birmingham to have a natural goalscorer will be invaluable to us if he stays fit,' he said.

For now though, Forssell won't be the only former Blue on the manager's mind, as he spends Sunday evening casting his mind back over the players that have helped us achieve this magnificent 64 game record.

Re: Chelsea FC - Supporters' Rally

Chelsea home comforts as Blues break record

Jose Mourinho has set his sights on a century of unbeaten league games at home after his Chelsea side defeated Birmingham to take him to 99.

Chelsea set the team record of 64 with the 3-2 win at Stamford Bridge, edging past Liverpool's efforts at Anfield between 1978 and 1981, but the manager's record is even more remarkable.

He last suffered a league defeat at home in 2002 when Beira Mar got the better of his Porto team, and avoiding defeat against Portsmouth later this month will see him reach his ton.

'I'm on 99 and I hope my friend Harry Redknapp doesn't kill my record in the next game at home because I would love to reach 100,' the Portuguese said.

Mourinho paid tribute to the players who featured during the team record, which was started in the season before he took over from Claudio Ranieri.

'The record means more to Chelsea than it does for me,' he said. 'The previous record belonged to top players - (Kenny) Dalglish, (Alan) Hansen, (Phil) Neal and great Liverpool players.

'At the moment it belongs to Chelsea - (John) Terry, (Frank) Lampard, (Eidur) Gudjohnsen and all the guys who contributed.

'I'll have to go home and remember every players that helped us achieve the record because not all of them are here - Gudjohnsen, Geremi, (Damien) Duff, all these guys.

'Chelsea has written its name in the history books of the Premier League and it's a great record. I'm very flattered for being part of the record.

'It has to be intimidating even when we (eventually) lose a game. Nobody is unbeatable, one day someone will come here and win and the important thing is that when we lose a game here that we don't lose the next one.'

Birmingham, however, gave Mourinho's men a real scare after Mikael Forssell gave them the lead against his former club.

Claudio Pizarro and Florent Malouda scored on their home debuts, although Birmingham goalkeeper Colin Doyle should have kept out Chelsea's first strike.

Olivier Kapo levelled matters again with a drive that found the top corner, but Michael Essien grabbed the winner, with Doyle palming his effort into the top corner.

'It would be better to score five or six goals and win in a different way but the game was great, not just because Chelsea played great attacking football but because Birmingham also were great,' Mourinho added.

'Teams from the Championship, especially in the first period after promotion, come with a winning spirit because that is what got them promoted.

'They could have scored three and we could have scored six or seven.'

Mourinho was pleased with his newcomers and was encouraged by Malouda and Shaun Wright-Phillips on the flanks.

'The wingers produced incredible football, the strikers played with great dynamic and we played good attacking football,' said. 'I always thought we would score goals, I don't like to concede goals but Birmingham played well.'

Victory, however, was soured by a knee injury to Essien which forced him off.

'It was something in the knee ligament,' Mourinho said. 'He was in pain, I had two midfielders on the bench so I made the change immediately.

'If you asked me, I don't know if he'd be fit for Wednesday against Reading.'

Andriy Shevchenko is also struggling with his back problem and will not train tomorrow.

Birmingham boss Steve Bruce described Chelsea's record as 'staggering' but was also encouraged by his own team's performance on their return to the Premier League.

'We gave it a real go but unfortunately we gave away soft goals,' he said.

'When you come to Chelsea you need your goalkeeper to be your best player but he's had one of those days. But he was instrumental in us being here so he deserved to be in the team.

'It's great to be back, the atmosphere and the smell of the hot dogs. If we keep producing performances like that we'll make a fist of it.

'I've been here before and played 1-9-1 and it doesn't work. You have to score goals in the Premier League.'

He added: 'The whole record is staggering. You have to take your hat off to them, they are always well prepared. To keep them focused at home for three years is an unbelievable achievement for the manager and the team.'
