In the olden days, people get married to have kids to help plough the lands and take care of family members when they grow old. Everyone is self sufficient. If there is not enough to eat, they have lands to grow food for themselves. It does not matter if you are poor, you can still grow your own food. With that many kids, everyone can take turn to take care of the aging parents.

In the modern society, who have lands to grow food? Everyone needs money to survive. Therefore everyone starts to become pragmatic and realistic, girls wanting guys who are rich and have lots of money/resources. Cost of living is high and middle income families are unable to have enough kids to rotate to take care of them. Kids grow up and become so busy themselves that they hardly ever have time to form families, let alone have enough time to accompany the aging parents 24/7 to take care of their needs.

Therefore there is no need to form families anymore.

Being single and married has their own consequences.

If one is single and bored, there are plenty of ways to connect with others.

For older generation that are not internet savvy, they can connect with others via Town council clubs and activities.

For generation that are internet savvy, they can connect via internet. Do what they like, play games, surf forums.

Singles/Widow/Divorce can still mingle, no one is stopping you. These groups can still join interest groups.

If someone is too old and unable to take care of themselves, for example the need of a maid to push them around in a wheelchair.

By this time, if one is too physically weak, lots of problems will arise as your blood circulation is bad. It won't be long till someone finally rest in peace.
