Just to the left of GoldStar/Pinocchio is a KTV that caters to Japanese people. Pinocchio is in a little plaza with 4 stores. The take home price here can be negotiated down to 600RMB. The drinks are cheaper as well. In order to compete with GoldStar, they too have adopted the top less dance. THe funniest thing is that they even use the same music GoldStar used 6 months ago. GoldStar has since changed outfits (purple tops instead of pink tops) and performance songs. The girls here tend to be of the cuter variety and I've had a great time there everytime.

I've had good luck with KTV places that cater to Japanese. They are cheaper than the ones that cater to other types of foreigners and cleaner than the ones that cater to the locals. There is another JP KTV right next to the New Harbour Hotel in Huang Pu district. The lineup is not as good as the other JP KTV place but the "happy hour" experience is very interesting! Courtesy of Shengge's info, I managed to make my way to what I think is Shanghai Palace.
