RMB3000 per month seems reasonable for a old one room apartment (30 to 40sqm) in a prime area, lightly furnished - you can work your estimates from here on (area, size, type of apartment, furnishing etc.). My OC's apartment only got RMB2,500 pm in a prime area, we just discontinued the rental after the agreeement expired in December and now for self use. Expats area do expect higher rentals.

Normally one month rent plus two months deposit, very unusal to pay one year full rent.

I guess no right no wrong on MaMister's statement. There is no guide line on the price tag to put on his happiness. As long he feel is worth it then the money is well spent.
