My 2 cents on this issue.

With regards to pay increments, the industry is very important. I started out with a very low base after graduation. Worked as a software programmer for 8 years. During this time only saw my pay double from the initial base. During this time, most of my peers who has started out about the same as me in other industries were earning about 2 to 3 times what I earned so basically I was way behind the curve.

Got very frustrated and decided to switch to the financial industry at current base with no pay increment for job change which I thought would pay better eventually. I was right. After switching, my pay essentially went up by 4 times in the next 4 yours and then stabilized.

Up to today, I consider the switch as the best career moves I have made and only felt that my mistake was to wait 8 years before switching.

In retrospect, I guess that the ladder you are trying to climb as more important than how hard you try to climb the ladder. Some ladders are naturally higher and have more space for a person to climb. And why did I wait 8 years. I guess its because even though I was not happy, it was familiar and within my comfort zone compared to the risk of stepping away into totally unknown territory. Its much easier to just go about doing the same thing everyday then to make an active effort to look for something new.

So I really urge anyone unhappy with current situation to take a step back and consider more opportunities at a bigger level and do not be discouraged if things do not seem to work out immediately. (In order to switch industries after 8 years in one line, I reckon I had sent out at least 300 resumes before getting an offer.)

You should read more. CHAS and PG are outpatients. If you think you can cure cancer through your family doctor, you are sillier than I think you are.

You're right. CHAS is outpatient. However, PG does include an annual MediShield top up which can be used for hospital stays. That's indirectly subsidising your parent's medical fees. You're avoiding the part about class C wards.

A middle person in society should be able to drive one now if he is still middle in society. The mere fact $6k can't buy you one shows $6k is no longer a middle person. It's quite straight forward really.
A middle person in society was able to drive a car 10 years ago when the COE was <$10K and a cheap Korean car (Picanto/ Rio) cost about $45k. The same car now (Rio) would cost $90+k to purchase (not the $100+k you mentioned in your thread). Petrol tax (and petrol prices) has increased recently which brought prices of 95 petrol from $1.50+ or $1.60+ 10 years ago to about $2.20 now. The way the PARF is calculated has also been revised recently so that bigger cars are less affordable for Singaporeans. So you might as well say that cars are affordable 10 years ago when you purchased yours.

However, one thing you're not getting is that cars are not meant to be a commodity for middle class Singaporeans. If everyone who earn 6k a month wants to buy a car, there would be way too many cars on the road.

And as for your case, it's unfortunate that your parents are dependent on you alone. The amount that you can save per month if your parents lived alone and your siblings footed their bill would be more than sufficient for you to purchase a new car when your COE is up (since your monthly household income is >$10k). while I know that I sound insensitive, there is no more gentle way to put it.

Because it is pointless talking to one who has not gone through it. Subsidies between B and C are for hospitalization cost (hospital bed), and it's savings marginal. It's surgery that is costly. And its surgery that determines whether a person lives (when cancer is extricated).

The cost of subsidised surgery is dependent on the ward your parent is staying in.

You are sure right about cars being not meant for the middle class. When I went Gleneagles Hospital recently, I was the only sg in a room of 30 people. Private hospitals are also not meant for the middle class too. Go queue 3 hours at a govt hospital.

I wonder what else is not meant for the middle class in the next 20 years? I reckon air. What do you think? You know, live underground if you can't afford to live above the ground. MND is already conceptualizing a underground Masterplan.

Re: Am i a low income worker?

Some of you people seriously need to get your head examined if you think the useless opposition can do better.

Your life will only improve if u strive for it, getting a new government in isn't going to help in Singapore's case. If anything, it will diminish your hope of a better life .

I disagree. Sometimes you need to break the system and start all over again when so many are suffering for the benefit of the few privilege.
Yes there will be an initial period of chaos but from the ashes will rise another beginning where there is hope for the masses rather than to be slaves forever to the fucking PAP!

Even the late LKY has voiced out after the last GE that his PAP successors have lost their way and forgotten about the fundamentals that he and the pioneers strived and fought for.

Some people need to get their heads examined when they conveniently buy into any politician's grand marketing talks. If you like the status quo, express it. If you don't like the status quo, express it. It's as simple as that because at the end of the day, nobody but you is going to live your life.

Re: Am i a low income worker?

Bros

Don't fight.

10 years back my income is 60% my current earning. Yet i comfortably drive a brand new Toyota Altis.

Now alot of items has very much expensive compare to those day. My income ""seem" goes up yet i cannot afford car. That trigger me curious on what is the threshold of middle income.
