I agree with u...
U know wats funny? Funny thing is most Thai don't even talk about this thing... most treat this Coup as "normal" as if it happens all the time. Most say its expected to happen sooner or later. Full stop. Nothing more to dicuss.

Most people still talking and discussing about this issue are foreigners like u and I.. I talked to an Australian yesterday and he went on and on about this and told me no Thai wanna talk to him about this. He feels that Thai don't wanna talk to him is cos they had "lost face" as their Army had to step up to put a stop to Thaksin... so they're not democrats as much as they like to claim themselves to be.

And furthermore, all these talks about their King... I suggest you guys restrain from even mentioning about their King if you want to have a conversation with a Thai.. unless u got praises for him. Fullstop.

Other than that, everything's normal in Thailand. I'll suspect all entertainments are back but I cannot be sure as I'll stay out from the city untill this weekend.

In a lifetime in Thailand, one would had witness an average of 4-5 coups.

There had been around 5-6 coups since WW2.

Re: State of Emergency In Bangkok

I a bit confused.
The military who seized the capital are rebels or what ?
Whose side are they on ?

Who vs who ? Is it the PM vs that Army Chief ?
If that the case means the Army Chief rebels ?

And the King support who ?
And the people support who ?

So is the PM going to get kick out ?

Sibei confuse.

Re: State of Emergency In Bangkok

Thanks to brothers in Bangkok giving us first hand info on the scene in BKK.

Members who chiong probably would appreciate some regular updates on opening hours and situation (perhaps even pricing) at:

(1) Massage Parlours & BJ Cafes - which are closed? Or open later/closes earlier?

(2) NEP, Cowboy areas are they still go-going? any Curfew?

(3) FL locations like Siam hotel, are they still hot?

(4) Club scene like RAO any problems?

Thanks again to our eyes in bangkok.

Most of my friends witnessed 3 Coups already... this is their 3rd one. This is the least voilence one with no arms fired at all. It looked like a well planned Coup cos Thaksin's message on TV was intercepted within minutes on air. Everything happened so fast and the armies were deployed within couple of hours...
I wonder how our brothers in SYC are when this thing happened.... dunno got shit their pants or not...

I don't normally go into the city on weekdays anyway... I was in my gym yesterday and there seens less crowded but nevertheless still lots of people... Still many soldiers along the road and cars will slow down to have a look at the soldiers and some take photos. They look harmless....
Other than that, everything's normal and life goes on.
We're advised not go out in a group of more than 6 people... and don't stay out too late...

Re: Chronology of the military coups 1932 - 2006

Since not much ppl understand or know of what a 'coup' is :

What is a 'coup'?

- coup d'etat: a sudden and decisive change of government illegally or by force
- A coup d'état (pronounced 'kū dā ta'), or simply a 'coup', is the sudden overthrow of a government, usually done by a small group that just replaces the top power figures. It is different from a revolution, which is staged by a larger group and radically changes the political system. The term is French for "a sudden stroke, or blow, of a state". ...

The Thai armed forces seized power on Tuesday without firing a shot, dismissing Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's government in the country's first coup in 15 years.

Here is a chronology of some of the military coups and major attempted coups since the southeast Asian nation became a constitutional monarchy in 1932.

1932: King Prajadhipok is overthrown in a coup d'etat. A military junta led by three educated radicals, Pridi Phanomyang, Major Phibun Sangkhram and Colonel Phahon Phonphaywhasena, takes control. Phrayo Manopakorn is appointed Prime Minister.

1933: Manopakorn dissolves the National Assembly and rules by decree, until he is removed in another coup. Phahon, one of the three involved in the 1932 coup, becomes Prime Minister.

1947: Military coup by General Phin Choonhavan deposes the government. Luang Aphai-Wongse is appointed Prime Minister, but is replaced by Phibun the following year.

1951: Phibun leads another military coup and restores the 1932 version of the constitution.

1957: Following a coup led by General Sarit Thanarat, politician Pote Sarasin is appointed leader of an interim government.

1976: An attempted military coup is defeated in February, but a successful coup in October overthrows Prime Minister Seni Pramoj. Admiral Sa-ngad Chaloryoo, previously minister of defence, is installed as chairman of a National Administrative Reform Council.

Oct 20, 1977: The government of Thanom Kravichien, appointed in 1976, is overthrown by a military coup, again led by Sa-ngad. A military Revolutionary Council takes power.

April 1, 1981: An attempted coup, led by General Sant Chipatima, deputy commander-in-chief of the Army, is suppressed by forces loyal to the government.

Sept 9, 1985: A coup is attempted by Colonel Manoon Roopkachorn; a number of senior officers are later arrested.

Feb 23, 1991: The government of General Chatichai is ousted in a bloodless military coup. Power is assumed by a National Peacekeeping Council, led by General Sunthorn Kongsompong.

Sept 19, 2006: The armed forces take power and dismiss Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's caretaker government while Thaksin and several other ministers are overseas. The military revoke the constitution and promise a swift return to democracy after political reforms.

Post Re: Royal Hand In Coup?

21 Sep, 2006 0014hrs ISTAP

BANGKOK: For many in Thailand, it was a clash between two men: an arrogant prime minister and a humble king who always wins.

Thailand's revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej has yet to utter a word about the dramatic overnight coup that ousted Thaksin Shinawatra. But speaking out is not the style of the 78-year-old monarch, who despite age and frailty has shown that he remains the most powerful man in the country.

It remains unclear what role the king played in removing Thaksin.

The palace claims it was not involved, but many Thai people, along with political and monarchy experts, see it as another example of the constitutional monarch's behind-the-scenes power, which he has exercised sparingly but effectively in his six-decade reign.

"If the king didn't give a nod, this never would have been possible," said Sulak Siwalak, a prominent social critic and author of books on the role of Thai monarchy.

"Thaksin failed to realise that the king has been on the throne for 60 years and he's no fool. The man is old and Thaksin thought he could play around with him and it was a dangerous game," said Sulak. "He felt he could belittle the king, and that's something the king cannot stand."

There was no one event that led to Thaksin's ouster, but a series of missteps that prompted many to accuse the prime minister of challenging the king's authority an unpardonable act in Thailand.
