Three hours by train from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Baru? This is likely within five years when the Federal Government implements its blueprint to transform south Johor into a new megahub .

The high speed train service is one of several measures being pursued by the Government to improve transport services and make the mega hub — which is expected to attract the top brains in the region — easily accessible.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman gave an inkling of the plan when addressing Johor civil servants here on Monday.

With the implementation of the mega hub project, he said, there was a need to provide a fast, comfortable and convenient mode of transport to JB for captains of industry, corporate big wigs and top civil servants in Kuala Lumpur.

"With the high speed trains, they would be able to whiz in and out of JB from KL for meetings or corporate events.

"This is exciting news for Johor," he said in his annual New Year message to the civil servants.

Khazanah Nasional, which is the prime mover of the south Johor development plan, is also expected to bankroll the new train service in association with Malayan Railways Berhad.

Expected to cost over RM3 billion, the service will involve the laying of separate new rail tracks for the high speed trains.

It now takes six to eight hours to travel by train from Kuala Lumpur to Johor Baru using conventional KTM trains.

"We expect the project to be up and running within five years," said Ghani.

He explained that it would add a new dimension to Johor’s bid to become the new logistics hub of the region.

With Senai Airport, Port of Tanjung Pelepas, Johor Port (Pasir Gudang) and an impressive network of new expressways, Johor is already abuzz with investors keen to tap into this synergy to reach markets around the world.

The master plan for the megahub, which is being drawn up by Khazanah Nasional, will feature an integrated growth corridor with infrastructure and buildings costing billions of ringgit.

The idea is to transform a 1,970 sq km swathe of land in south Johor into the focal point for business, leisure and industries with world-class facilities and services.

The preliminary report on the blueprint is expected to be ready by the end of this month.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will unveil the details when he tables the Ninth Malaysia Plan in Parliament in March.

In April 1997, the Cabinet had approved a plan to launch a RM8.3 billion Kuala Lumpur-Singapore high-speed train service.

It was part of a proposal then to privatise KTM Bhd, but the plan fell through subsequently.
