Nowadays the clamp down (Chinese call them YD Yan da ÑÏ´ò) is very prominent, lots of crackdown and scaring people away, the shops rarely have their neon lights on as well. For those who are just visiting Shanghai for a short trip, and have the urge or need for a release, go for it, just need to consider the security measures.

The saunas (or Spas) are very similar in modus operandi, the difference can be seen in Price / Safety / Location. I will not nitpick on prices here, its all 450 - 880 RMB per session on average, pending on size/ location/ availability/ popularity to foreigners.

SAFETY - the essential factor, no one wants to talk to the authorities on their birtday suits, no one is crazy enough to think that there is no way he can get caught. There is always risk, its just how to minimize the risk percentage.
During this Yan Da period, most people are afraid to visit the premises, all you have to understand there are 2 different type: those in prominent places (like Pudong Ming Ding , Xu Jia Hui 999, or Jin An Temple's Jin 18), these are definitely backed by powerful people, and those in secluded or hard to find locations, these are double edged: either they are very careful, or that they don't have a good backing. From my understanding, most of the time is the former.

¼ª»ªãåÔ¡ÐÝÏлáËù Ji Hua Bathing Leisure Centre at Jin Hai Road No 18 in Jin Qiao Area, Same as Above Dong Jin Wan except I have seen it while driving, BIG place, probably up to par with those Huge Family Spas you can see around Shanghai. The downside is its far from city centre and was informed price not on the low side.

»ÊºÍãåÔ¡ÐÝÏÐÖÐÐÄ Huang He Bathing Leisure Centre at Gao si Road No. 1068in Zhang Jiang Area, nowhere near my daily driving routine, but heard about it, the upside is reported price seems by competitive, but in my opinion is way out of place, just like Ji Hua above.

There is a lot others, there are a number of similar locations that you won't even know they are there unless you actually being told they are there. I won't go into details for now, Maybe I will write about them after i finish with the other areas in the future.

I was too immersed in the writing that I actually forgot to elaborate on the Safety.

The bottomline is that you cannot be 100% safe, if you want to be real safe, follow the safe path the other bros follow. 999 and Jin 18 Spa are pretty safe, and will get good notice ahead if there is a crackdown.

For me, I live in Shanghai and thus I can actually check out the places from the outside for a while to see if its a good place or a problem place. I have this privilege.

For those with limited time in Shanghai, I say you should consider the Interior decor of the place, this partially will reveal what quality of security, follow your big head first, check the sauna place, check the common resting place, the more old people or boss looking people the better. The more youngsters or hippies or such, the worse. If you see lots of Japs, all the better (not the price though), If you see lots of normal white collar chinese, perhaps you should consider more (not biased, just careful)

Price should not be a factor in considering safety, the biggest joint can be busted by people that is higher ranked than the backer. There is no surely safe place. Irony isn't it that actually Geylang is more legal than anything you can find in Shanghai......
