I am also a volunteer, and I also contribute to community welfare services. Since you are also a volunteer, you should know that there are assistance schemes to help them. For your said poor children surviving on 1 meal per day, they have the options to go for the welfare schemes. If they choose not to, then we cannot help them. But there are also many bogus case. I have met cases where they say they are poor. But you will be shocked when they answer their phone call on the Nokia N70!

I do not blame you for not knowing the existence of the various schemes. The CDC may not be doing enought to promote the scheme. And the Ministries may not have made known its schemes too. These people may be just concerned to show some report to their head of dept, something like this year how many people benefitted from the scheme, and they are unlikely to show how many people who needs the scheme but are unaware.

There is also a reason why Chinese students. But their policy makers made some blunders such as not screening their financial background well before approving their entry. They also did not take into consideration what their pdmm can do or will do in Sillypore to sustain the living. But the main driving force will come from us customers! Seeds can be sown,but if there are no customers, the seeds will die.

I drove past Geylang a few days back. Despite all the "sweep" by AV, the streets may look a bit quieter, but somewhere in the corner, there is a big party of mei mei. This is the power of customers and suppliers.

If singapore government has allowed chinese FL to work in Cat 40 like the thais, perhaps a lot of such problems could have been averted.

Anyway the more the government want to curb down, the more it will florish underground. Give it few weeks, i expect to see them back in full force in GL or even back in some other forms very soon. When one is desperate, especially in terms of earning more money, all things are possible

you are right if our govt can allow the prc gal (including pdmm) to work in the fish tank like thai then a lot of problems will be solved and we just go direct to the fish tanks and look see look see.

However it will not work, I did told one prc gal before how nice if they are allowed to work in fish tank ... 1st, they need not to play hide and seek with AV and 2nd we as a customer also have one more choice to choose ... but she told me it will never never be possible because of the china govt don't allow this to happened to their women not like thailand and malaysia.

She told me it will be very the lost face for such a big and powerful country where their female citizen need to work in fish tank here, a small red drop.

in fact i think our govt are more than happy to allow them to work in fish tank so that there will be more income like the clinic check up fee and the mata also need not to play cat and mouse games with them.

I beg to differ, the garment decision to bring in foreign students is a short sighted one in which the side effects are not considered.. What of screening financial background, there are no way to ensure the PDMM have $$$ as they can easily get ceritified doc showing big numbers...
The problem with the garment is they tot the world is like sillypore, chinese are chinese whether they came from m'sia or prc, the truth is it's not, (1) they assume that financial screening will be clean and clear cut like here, (2) they assume that ppl will only come here cos of higher education standards (sad fact being they need English education, not that the standard is high) , (3) they assume that the PDMM are rich tai tais here to supervise their kids (while the sad fact is, a lot of them are escaping their no good husband and future-less life for their kid), (4) they assume that everyone gets 1million p.a. and more than enough to survive...

What spark off the problem are the facts that PRC are smarter, hungier and money minded than they think, it's not the real PDMM that are causing the problem, in fact, they are victims as well, its the fact that students visa are another means of digging for more gold before returning as rich successful gals....
