1) paying seaport tax(about S$15 per person, if I still remember correctly) at TP. On my first trip to TP, some time back in 1999, I and my friend booked two rooms at rainbow hotel before boarding the ferry. The driver was supposed to meet us at the TP jetty. But I and my friend, really stupid, pasted the Rainbow hotel sticker on our shirts happily. Upon reaching the jetty, one malay guy approached us, saying that he is the driver from Rainbow Hotel. He brought us to a building somewhere in town, saying that we have to pay the seaport tax, which is about S$50 per head). After some negotiation, we managed to cut it to S$15 per head. Then the driver said that we have to engage his service at S$100 per head per day, which is S$200 in total(2d1n trip). We lan lan have to accept. Upon reaching the hotel, the hotel staff knew what happen upon seeing us coming in with a bunch of malay guys. Really one whole group. Two van full house with me and my friend inside. He settled the driver by telling him and his friends to fuck off with S$7. The S$7 was charged to our accounts, of course. 2) Last time, when I was really GREEN to riau scene, I used to engage drivers at BT and BL, way back in 2000. All of them asked for loans after a few trips. Amounts range from S$50 to XXX. The most I ever "give"(lend) was S$200. Excuses range from father, mother, sister, son, daughter need to see doctor, pay rental for van/car, pay gambling debts, etc. After a while, back in 2002, I started to explore around alone, with a driver. Even without driver, I still can move around on my own. In fact, I learn faster this way. Engaging a driver is like a baby being spoon-fed. Frankly, I feel that it is not really necessary to engage a driver in BT and BL. There are so many ojeks and taxis around. You save money and time on calling your driver to come and pick you up, excluding the other higher costs of booking fees for cewek and other expenses. |
