Why need another stamp when it is domestic flight between Bandung and Jakarta. It is like travelling from Jurong to Changi or Penang to KL.

The best way is to settle on the spot on the street. 200k will do the deeds. If you want to file a complaint, do so through the embassy, that is why it is important to have the embassy number, get the police ID and make him change career to join the poorly paid.

If embassy staff is useless and you still want to exact revenge. Write to Jakarta post editor who will take up your story. Be prepared to battle it out, and make sure your wives know you visit Classic hotels.

Not embassy staff is useless, unless serious case, locked up or dead else embassy staff can do nothing. They can only advise them to go police station file a report. Assume the staff takes up their case, either he prepares a letter of complaint or goes to the police station with them, that is all he can do.

Decided to spend my first weekend here at Oasis Spa. Taxi ride cost me RP40K from central area. Relatively easy to find as I had already done some search on Google on the loc.

Here is my take on your unfortunate experience. At the end of the day, these cops are just looking for cash. They will try any means to extort from you including threatening to take you to the police station.

I was stopped in Ancol coming back from Alexis in a Bluebird taxi at around 1 a.m. Unlike you, I wasn't carrying my passport but my saving grace was an inability to speak Bahasa Indonesia. Traffic cops don't want to drive you back to the station when they could be extorting Rupiah from some other poor souls. The more taxis they stop, the more money they make. They can't do that if they're driving you back to the station.

If you feel you really have to give money, most cops will take Rps 200K. By giving 2 juta, you are simply encouraging these bent cops to be even more greedy.

Finally, I am surprised the cops stopped you because you don't have the proper chop in your passport coming up from Bandung. Sorry, but last time I checked Bandung was still part of Indonesia, why would you need a chop in your passport? (Perhaps the senior Jakarta bros can comment here).

My advice is when faced with a Police traffic road block, always carry your passport, keep cool and be polite, never show anger or frustration. Never get defensive! If you're a foreigner/tourist, give the impression you can't really speak the local language well and be apologetic. This may be enough to get you off the hook.

Btw, with Ramadan approaching, expect to see more of these roadblocks springing up across Jakarta...

As a police, this man salary is a pittance but he might receives kickbacks higher than his salary from patrolling the streets. As far as possible, policemen will try to keep their jobs for the perks that the position offers. So most of them will likely accept settlements on the street and move on to the next case.

Again ,I am repeating, but 200k rupiah is the magic number to settle most cases on the street with the police. Bros might want to note that figure, or memorize it by hard when in Jakarta.

I guess u miss the main part I mentioned about embassy and police report which u suggested earlier...

I just feel S'porean is not very street smart in oversea.... Little hiccup, first thing in mind, make police report, lodge a complaint. If it is a minor problem, what does S'porean expects the police or embassy staff to do??

I survived 8 years in oversea, in 3 different cities, all these lie on how u handle the situation. As long as small money makes wonder then move on. Dun dwell over them...

After reading the postings and the comments from senior brothers, I can only joined in to say, " I am sad to hear of the unfortunate incident." Ramadan or no Ramadan, the roads after 12mightnite is flooded by police road blocks. These coppers unable to find extra coffers in the day, always resort to "extorting" innocent travellers out in the wee hours for money.

To start with, as a tourist you don't need a visa to enter Indonesia if you hail from the ASEAN zone. You are allowed a 30 days free visit and you can travel to any part of Indonesia except for West Papua and Irian Jaya where you need special permit. As your enter any port of call, your passport is stamped and that is the only stamp you need.

The police that stopped you and said your travel documents are incomplete are just trying their luck to frighten you. It is a ploy to first disorientate you and then threatened you and later asked for money. In instances like this it is always best to keep cool and not lose your temper otherwise things may be worst. What you can do is merely to state that according to Indonesian Law this is the requirement and that you have fulfilled them, it is not stated anywhere the need for an extra stamp and your have already confirmed this with the immigration authorities in Indonesia. If they still insist then said let me confirmed with my Embassy or called the Jakarta Police Hotline 112 (6221-112) and enquire.No guarantee that it works but at least worth a try.

Don't worry about being arrested, they need to file a report and the report must be endorsed by their Commanding Officer when arresting a foreigner, they have to inform the foreigner Embassy that they have arrested so and so. If it is not a bona fide case, the police will not want to waste their time and energy for that lengthy paperwork. It is always the fear of being arrrested and bringing back to the police station that scares the shit out of us "innocent" lambs and relenting to their request.
