More details :-

An Indonesian jetliner with 117 people on board has crashed into a residential neighbourhood and burst into flames shortly after taking off from the northern city of Medan.

The Boeing 737-200 run by Mandala Airlines ploughed into a densely-populated area just outside the perimeter of Medan's Polonia aiport, said Ino, a spokesman for the National Search and Rescue Agency.

Television images showed firefighters battling flames leaping from the smoking wreckage. Crumpled vehicles, bicycles and several destroyed houses could also be seen.

The airline which is part-owned by the Indonesian military said 112 passengers and five crew were on board the flight which was bound for the capital Jakarta.

"The probability is that the number of victims will be high, including residents on the ground," Mandala executive director Major General Asril Hamzah Tanjung told a press conference here.

He said the cause of the crash remained unclear, but that while the aircraft was 24 years old it had undergone extensive tests in June.

Hamka Satria Anom, the operations director of the state-owned transport insurer Jasa Raharja, told El-Shinta radio that at least 30 charred bodies had been recovered from the wreckage.

Telephone links with the airport and the surrounding areas of Medan, the capital of North Sumatra province, were cut off following the accident.

Metro Television showed images of one wounded man with blood streaming from his face lying on the ground near the crash site.

Several senior government officials were on the plane, said North Sumatra province spokesman Edi Sofyan

North Sumatra Governor Rizal Nurdin and a former North Sumatra governor, Raja Inal Siregar, were on the flight. They were heading to the capital for talks with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.

The spokesman also said he had received a report that the acting governor of the tusnami-ravaged province of Aceh was on board.

Mandala Airlines was set up in 1969 and is one of several low-cost airlines that fly across the vast Indonesian archipelago. It is 90 percent owned by a foundation set up by the army strategic reserve Kostrad.

Monday's crash was one of Indonesia's worst airline accidents in recent years.

In November last year an MD-82 plane belonging to the budget carrier Lion Air crashed in the central Java city of Solo, killing 26 people and injuring over 100.

Medan's airport is one of the busiest in Indonesia and became the hub for the reconstruction effort in nearby Aceh province following the December 26 tsunami.
