Screening Before Surgery

Going for surgery next week at a local government hosipital. Remember reading in the papers some time ago that anyone admitted to hospitals for surgery will be screened for any contagious sickness....I guess this would include HIV right? And if never declare earlier can be charged or something like that?

Any bro in the health industry can advise? Thanks.

They will ask you to sign a consent form before conducting the HIV test. You can choose to accept or decline the offer. Most often people decline citing extra expenses to the medical bill. But its up to you. Whatever your decision, under routine tests prior to surgeries, they are not authorized to test for HIV without your written consent. This is the law.

As long as there is operation where there is a surgery involved.
Whether how minor is it. if you going in.the operation room. They will
test it.

Me not doctor but got doctor clientele so can give advice onot?

From wat I understand from my doctor kakis......... if there is a need for it they will test regardless of whether u give consent onot........ to them the policy is safety first....... they'll worry about the consequences later

and many times the patient doesn't even know he has been tested

Must be some doctors contracting disease from their operated patients...

Understandable though...since I am going for surgery, might as well cure all my problems .

thanks bro, finished the surgery liao....not sure they tested for hiv or not, but took 2 big tubes of blood from me in the morning, while ops was in the afternoon. guess, no news is good news

don't worry. If they did not get your consent, they can only conduct anonymous testing for statistics.

you were in the same situation as me.
I was also going for a minor operation.
They took some blood from me.
I asked them why they need my blood for.

They told me if i going for operation. They need to run some test and that include the hiv. Its in their procedure. Dont need my consent at all.

I think last year they already enforced. I think it come out in the news also.

Ministry of Health: Update on the HIV/AIDS situation in Singapore

Our public hospitals are progressively implementing the US CDC recommendations. HIV testing will be included in the regular health screening of healthcare workers, on a voluntary basis. Changi General Hospital has started doing so. As for screening of patients, we have begun doing so for all pregnant mothers and have already saved about 30 babies from unnecessary HIV transmission in the last two years. Later this year, we will also start offering HIV testing to adult male inpatients on a voluntary basis.

Find it rather silly. End up they know whether you are HIV-negative or HIV-positive, but you yourself don't know.

Correction: They won't know who's samples are those too. So end up they only know got one more Singaporean tiok 4D, and yet both parties don't know who!

This is ture, I had a minor surgery last year and the Form I have signed includes a compulsory testing of any sex diseases.
