Ex-taekwondo champ, wife fined for corruption & vice

A 1993 SOUTH-EAST Asia Games taekwondo gold medallist was fined a total of $29,000 on Friday for corruption and vice-related offences.

Wong Jing Ching's wife, Shirinbekova Yelena, 23, an Uzbekistan national, was also fined $8,000 for living on the immoral earnings of a prostitute, and helping him to manage a contact point for prostitutes in 2010.

Wong, alias Patrick Champion Wong, 40, was 22 when he won the flyweight category of the taekwondo competition at Yishun Sports Hall. He admitted to eight charges with 17 others taken into consideration during his sentencing. Three of them were for living on the immoral earnings of a Uzbekistan prostitute, receiving the 21-year-old prostitute at the airport, and managing a place of assignation at Landmark Village Hotel between April 29 and June 2 2010.

He bribed security supervisor Sazali Kassim, 31, $1,200 on each of four occasions between January and May 2010, in exchange for not reporting suspected vice-related activities in the hotel to the management. Wong also abetted Sazali to give a $600 bribe to the latter's colleague, Mr Muhammad Farhan Osman, 23, in April then, for the same purpose.

The offences were uncovered on June 1 2010, when Wong asked plainclothes police officers near Orchard Towers if they were interested in sexual services provided by 'Russian prostitutes'. He ferried them in his taxi to the Victoria Street hotel and led them to a room to view the five Uzbekistan prostitutes.

Shortly after, a team of police officers raided the room and detained Wong and the women. The couple started to arrange for Shirinbekova's friends to carry out prostitution in Singapore and received commissions from them for every customer they served.

Not sure why a national champ is degraded to driving a taxi and pimping... Hope that it's not that the sports body is neglecting the progression of such talents...

SG society is just that realistic and "aggressive", thanks a lot to Gangmen (肛门), oops, Gahmen. It focus on "mainstream" sectors such as Law, Medical, Banking, Finance, etc etc.

So what if you were once World Champion of any sports? In time to come (short few years), the sportsman will be old, not as fit and agile as the younger ones, not to mention, such competitive sportsmen usually sustained sports injuries all over their bodies. Sportman is not an occupation, they don't get salaries. At most, maybe awards won during competitions / tournaments, and training fees as coach / instructors in those sports classes / courses.

The luckier and more enterprising ones may get commercial contracts with sports equipment / apparel manufacturers / companies to appear in advertisements, be their product spokesman, etc. Or open retail shop selling sports apparels / equipment with endorsement from those sports equipment / apparel manufacturers / companies. But those are the luckier ones. What about the unlucky ones? Not everyone is so lucky. Whether lucky or unlucky, the sportsman still need to eat and live.

Especially in SG, winning a sports event is just simply about pride / ego, aka "face" only. If don't win, no big deal. If win, just publish in the media for some time, and then forgotten again. For this kind of "glory", SG just need to spend some $$$, buy or import sportsmen from other countries, wear the SG flag / logo on their sportswear during those competitions, that's it! Isn't that in recent years? How many are local born / home-grown / home-breed sportsman? Yes, a few names are Ang Peng Siong, Fandi Ahmad, but there are so many sports, how many other sportsman made it famous / well-known, and not to mention, drive luxury cars, live in condos / private properties?

But if you are in "mainstream" sectors, many drive luxury cars, live in posh / private properties.

Maybe if he is a champ nowadays, he might be better taken care of...look at those current sports FT...enticed to take up sg citizenship with whatever rewards for winning and training...

I strongly agree to this. All the dreams and goals for locals to achieve in sports scene is not realistic at all. For that moment of glory find a FT and offer them perks and win.

People in sports do fade away in time unless they are innovative enough to earn a living.

I agree with u, those FTs or China B Team pocketed about 1 mil of our tax money for winning Silver in OLAMPIC ping pong BALLS tournament.. .. whats wrong with us chiongster supporting an ex-TKD champ in his Euro char Bor ???
