Thumbs up PR aims to run in Indonesian election with no intention to sink roots in SG

PR aims to run in Indonesian election with no intention to sink
roots in SG

May 27th, 2013 | Author: Editorial

Mr Yoga, a Singapore PR, aims to run in Indonesian
election. (ST Photo).

An Indonesian who is a Singapore PR, Yoga Dirga Cahya, 26, hopes to run in
the next Indonesian election. His candidacy was confirmed by the National
Mandate Party, a party under the current ruling coalition, last month.

The Indonesian election is slated to take place on 9 Apr next year.

Mr Yoga came to Singapore at 18 in 2004, to study in NTU with the aid of a
MOE tuition grant. In return for getting the grant, he served a 3 year bond at
NEA after his graduation. He has been in Singapore for the past 9 years and is
still working for NEA. He plans to leave NEA in Jul so that he can focus on his
Indonesian election campaign. He disclosed that his campaign will run online and
in Jarkarta where he will focus on issues such as good governance, a clean
Parliament and better rule of law.

He said, “Many Singaporeans go overseas and get the best education, and they
come home and work and contribute to their society. I wish to do the same for
mine.”

“There is this entrenched perception among Indonesians that politics is
dirty. But if nobody wants to step up and kick-start change, then naturally no
change will occur.”

According to the National Day Rally Speech made by PM Lee in 2010 [Link],
he said, “Immigrants, the PRs and the citizens are far fewer. We are very
careful whom we accept. Not only must they contribute to our economy but they
have also got to integrate with our society and strike roots
here
.”

Also, according the Population White Paper [Link]
endorsed by the 77 PAP MPs in Parliament:

“Permanent residence (PR) is granted to those who have a long-term stake in
Singapore and who intend to sink roots here. It is an intermediate step through
which foreigners take up citizenship in Singapore.”

“We will grant about 30,000 PRs each year, in order to maintain the PR
population at between 0.5 and 0.6 million for a stream of good quality
candidates for citizenship (15,000 and 25,000 new citizens each
year).”
Since Mr Yoga intends to run for election in Indonesia and wants to go back
home to contribute to his Indonesian society, it appears that he has no
intention to sink roots in Singapore.

And since the purpose of PR is for foreigners to sink roots in Singapore and
eventually become a citizen in the long term, shouldn’t the Singapore Govt start
taking away the permanent residency of those who have “signalled” that they
wouldn’t be sinking roots here, after given a chance?

They can always be given a work pass to continue to work in Singapore instead
of PR.
