Malaysia : Man severely beaten by group of mat rempit

MANJUNG: A man was severely beaten by a group of mat rempit after he confronted the group and advised them not to race and make noise in front of his house in Kampung Koh here on Sunday.

It was learnt that the man had damaged a motorcycle belonging to one of the group's members after they failed to heed his advice, which led to the attack.

District police chief Assistant Commissioner Jaafar Baba said 46-year old mechanic Tan Eng Chi almost lost the sight in his right eye after he was attacked repeatedly with sharp objects by the group in the 2.30am incident.

He said the man was sent to the Seri Manjung Hospital by family members for treatment before he was transferred to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh.

“Acting on a police report lodged by the victim's mother later, police nabbed six suspects in nearby areas several hours after the attack,” he said.

Jaafar said the suspects, aged between 16 and 21, have been detained under remand until Saturday to facilitate investigations into the case.

He said one of the suspect was a secondary school student, another was a student at a higher learning institution while the rest are either self-employed or unemployed.

Jaafar added that one of the suspects also tested positive for drug abuse and had a previous conviction for keeping stolen items.
