Press Release
22 Jan 2014

Dear friends from the press,

Protest against Transport Fare Hike

25 Jan (Sat) at 5pm

Hong Lim Park

We are still lining up the speakers for this coming Saturday’s protest against the fare hike but this time round we are trying to get hold of more ordinary people to speak.

There is also no stage now as we want to be real close with our protestors. They are expected to be more involved in this protest than merely sitting on plastic chairs under the shade comfort.

It will be a different experience altogether as the protestors will be more involved this time.

We are glad to have on board with us Kwan Yue Keng a veteran speaker at Hong Lim Park who MC a lot of our 6.9 million PWP protests, Osman Sulaiman – a second-time speaker with us (he spoke at our national day event), Singapore-for-Singaporeans icon Daryl Tan who spoke at our third PWP protest and Soong See Choo a 50-year-old married aircraft technician who is walking 8km from Serangoon to be with us.

We will try to include a few more ordinary Singaporeans in the speaker list so that they can have an opportunity to voice out against the transport fare hike.

Dennis Khew who drives is also supporting the event by walking all the way from Hougang to the park that day – kudos to him!

Eric Lim is cycling all the way from Punggol to attend the protest!

If you are also walking or cycling to the event do let us know so that we can acknowledge your effort in standing up against the unreasonable fare hike starting on 6 April.

I have also seen some comments questioning our efforts to organise the protest – is it useful or not – they asked?

It is because we are so meek and silent that the authorities can regularly shove down any regulations down our throat with the least of resistance.

Even PM Lee mentioned that the CPF law was passed down many years ago because there isn’t any protest against it!

If the fare hike happens in other countries, people will take to the streets in mass protest.

Yes, we don’t have a culture of protest and our recent protests looked like a rally to many people with stage setup, drinks and even shelter from the elements.

Ours looked amateurish compared to those organised overseas with street demonstrations, flags waving wildly and tens of thousands people attending.

But that won’t deter us from holding more protests in future as our people need to rise up and be heard.

We can’t be silent no more and if we don’t protest the authorities will think that we are happy with the fare rise.

We are happy to see more than 500 people have indicated their intention to attend the protest this coming Saturday and another 300 indicated maybe.

Please don out in black – the universal protest colour and bring along a placard to voice out your disagreement with the fare hike.

There will also be a segment whereby we will allow our protestors to come and speak a few minutes individually to the crowd towards the end of the event.

As promised, the protest format will be different from the past ones we have organised. There is also a huge surprise in store for those who will take the time and efforts to attend our first protest this year.
