Violence in the country has so far left three people dead Burning: The police officer fights to remove his helmet A blazing policeman battled to save his own life as he was hit by a petrol-bomb at the height of riots in Ukraine which killed three people. As the Molotov cocktail hit him the riot policeman’s bullet-proof helmet and flame-proof uniform were covered in the burning fuel. Even as the officer tried to fan out the flames, he was forced to pull off his scorching helmet, but the flames started licking his uncovered face and neck. Burns: The flames lick at the officer's face and neck * He was one of at least 100 policemen who were rushed to hospital as the violence broke out in central Kiev during anti-Government protests. Sixty-one civilians also needed hospital treatment as the riots were broken up. Fury had been building all week - and punches were even thrown in the country’s Parliament as hard-line President Viktor Yanukovych forced through new laws banning any form of protest in public. Kiev: The riots in the Ukrainian capital * The president said the violence threatened the entire country and ordered five-year jail terms for anyone who blockades public buildings. Protesters wearing masks or helmets would also be arrested, he ruled. One pro-European activist lost his hand after a grenade was thrown into crowds, it was claimed. Tensions between protesters and the government have been near-boiling point for two months after President Yanukovych abandoned a pact for closers ties with the EU in favour of trade deals with former soviet masters in Moscow.
