Ass Loon: OUR MANDARIN AND ENGLISH IS GOOD BECAUSE WE BANNED DIALECTS. FT Still BEST!
An honorable member of the Coffee Shop Has Just Posted the Following:
PM LEE: OUR MANDARIN AND ENGLISH IS GOOD BECAUSE WE BANNED DIALECTS Post date: 5 Jul 2014 - 6:05pm PM Lee Hsien Loong said that Singapore has good levels of English and Mandarin because the government had decided not to promote the use of dialects. He was speaking at the Speak Mandarin Campaign, where he reiterated that the government would not be returning to a focus on dialect. He said that the current language policy was "sound". "When we first introduced our bilingual policy," Mr Lee said in Mandarin, "we did so knowing that it was very difficult for most people to master English, Mandarin and dialects at the same time. This principle has not changed." He spoke about how there are trade-offs to be had and trying to learn too many languages will result in the standards across all the languages dropping. Mr Lee explained that this would then have an impact on future opportunities. Allowing dialects to be used more widely is not the most practical approach, he explained, and he implied that Mandarin would be good enough to preserve Singaporeans' culture. However, PM Lee did admit that there is still some room for dialects and the government could permit their use in certain circumstances. One example is the dialect videos produced to explain the Pioneer Generation Package to older Singaporeans. Click here to view the whole thread at www.sammyboy.com. |
