PAYING RESPECTS: Madam Chew Ah Hong and her son, Mr Pee Joo Tiong, in the utility room where Mr Pee Cheng Hai was found dead on Sunday.PHOTOS: GAVIN FOO

He had gone to lie on the floor of the utility room in the three-room flat in Ghim Moh last Tuesday. Mr Pee Cheng Hai, a 74-year-old retiree, did not emerge for five days, remaining in that position without any movement or sound. That was where he usually slept, said his wife Madam Chew Ah Hong, 64, who slept in a separate bedroom. When the smell of decomposing flesh began to permeate the flat last Thursday, Madam Chew and her son suspected that something might have happened to Mr Pee. But they did nothing and continued living in the flat until Sunday when she made a police report. Paramedics later pronounced Mr Pee dead.
