Multiple pieces of a tumour show anastomosing nests and trabeculae composed of malignant squamous cells. There is nuclear pleomorphism with hyperchromatic nuclei and prominent central nucleoli.The cytoplasm is abundant and eosinophilic. Focal keratinisation and squamous pearls are seen. Scant underlying fibrotic stroma show microscopic tongues of atypical squamous epithelium showing paradoxical maturation. One tiny piece of benign mucosa lined by respiratory epithelium shows chronic inflammation.

Diagnosis

Left vocal cord tumour, biopsy

Moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma.

Multiple pieces of malignant cells means got aggressive cancer. One tiny benign piece means non cancer. Abundant and not fully matured. Looks like stage 2. If it had spread to other areas, it will be stage 3 or 4. The stage determines how far the cancer has spread. Seems restricted to only the vocal chord.
